As for portals, I don't see why there isn't any between the places. :) There could also be portals between them that come from the plane of water. |
| Gray Richardson09-09-05, 07:35 PM | There definitely are water portals all across Toril. Here is a link to one called Umberlee's Fist: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/pg/20030423b In Sea of Fallen Stars there was a portal between Shou-Lung in Kara-Tur and the Sea of Fallen Stars through which the octopoid race of the Tako settled in Faerūn. The gate is currently out-of-order but it could conceivably be reactivated some how. There is a great whirlpool gate in the middle of Myth Nantar. There are 3 portals in the undersea Forest of the Seven. There are time portals in the sea cliffs that travel to Toril's distant past. In fact the Sea of Fallen Stars is riddled with portals both natural and man-made (or elf-made, more often). Portals are frequently found in Aryselmalyn cities or sites beneath the waves of Serōs. In the Realms of the Deep book, and I believe in the Threat from the Sea trilogy there are made mention of natural portals that link the Sea of Swords to the Sea of Fallen Stars. There was a particularly sad tale if I remember of a merman who was trying to swim from the Sea of Swords to the Sea of Fallen Stars by the use of undersea portals that was really quite touching. Cloak & Dagger mentions an ancient portal that linked Ascarle with the ruins of Inthar. There are also the Krakengates, 4 or 5 imense linked sea portals controled by the Kraken society linking Ascarle with a hidden undersea cave beneath the Whalebones with another gate on the sea floor about sixty miles south of the Ice Peak with a gate in a deep trench 150 miles west of Leilon and a 5th gate that was under construction in 1368 DR but should probably have been completed by now that emerges in the Trench of Lopok in the Sea of Fallen Stars. It should be noted that Tritons make it their business to monitor every portal that they become aware of in the Sea of Fallen Stars and presumably elsewhere in the world. They fear a great disaster whereby someone might open a portal to the Plane of Fire or the Plane of Air and drain away the seas. But Sea of Fallen Stars makes it clear that there are far too many portals than there are watchers. And one need not stick with the established canon portals. Portals are so common everywhere around Faerūn that a DM should not fear to put one anywhere he likes linking any place with any other place that advances the story in his game. :) |

I do not see any connection between the Sea of Fallen Stars and the Sea of Swords. Yes there are. There is a large portal connecting the Celestial Sea of Kara-Tur to the Sea of Fallen Stars. This is something of a retcon due to the fact that Troy Denning had Shou ships sailing in the Inner Sea in The Veiled Dragon. I forget which recent accessory confirmed the existence of this portal though. |
