i was just browsing through the book power of faerun and i didn't see a chapter on being a really powerful wizard. does anyone know if it's part of another chapter, or if they don't talk about it at all? if not, why did they leave it out? if they did talk about it, where is it?

I'm not sure exactly why there was supposed to be a chapter about them?

The book wasn't designed for THAT kind of "power." Not class-based power, but social.

yes, i browsed through enough of the book to see that. but wizards (or sorcerers, or whatever), because of their magic, wield a certain type of power that others do not. if they were to become socially powerful, i think there might be certain issues that would arise for them that would not arise for other types of characters, such as how to use magic to best help them maintain their rule.

are those types of issues addressed in the book?

No, and thank God!

I don't want the Realms to become an Aies Sedai Robert Jordan ripoff! :P

PS: there has been wizard-controlled empires in the past... let them gather dust...

Being a wizard in power would generally fall into the categories they presented. The problems they would face would be no different from what a non-wizard would face, beyond the occassional arcane challenge... solutions wouldn't be all that different either. Only real difference would lie in how they accomplished those solutions... the tools used are different, end product is pretty much identical would be good way of putting it.

There still are: Thay and Halruaa at the very least qualify, and Aglarond is run by the Simbul.

In any event, I suppose if you wanted info on this, you could just look up information on some of those wizard-run nations. Thay, Halruaa, Athalantar, Netheril, etc etc. Theres no shortage of them. And even some wizards who aren't connected to any given nation have political influence in some of them (Elminster, for instace).

A wizard can be the leader of a church, a military, a nation or a trading coster. They just tend to focus on other pursuits. Power of Faerun was not so much split along class lines as it was split along social lines. Priests, Druids, Paladins and such obviously are the most suited to the church chapter. Fairly every class applies equally well to the military chapter though warrior classes are the ones to be most interested. Wizards do not receive any special treatment because they are a natural part of the order of life in Faerun. Any of the power structures mentioned with a wizard in charge is still that sort of power structure.

Wizards don't exactly have any type of social institution specific to them. They are heavily associated with places of learning and many colleges in Faerun are specifically colleges of magic for wizards. A chapter on colleges and other learning institutions would have been interesting overall. Would have been material not specific to wizard as bards seem to be the dominant class in that area.

Now if you are talking something along the lines of a Wizards Order like the Wizards of Waterdeep, the War Wizards of Cormyr and so on those are usually some hybrid form of trading organization military unit and education platform and the information pertaining to those types of institutions apply equally as well to Wizard Orders.

-The different regional sourcebooks would be a better place to research how different spellcasters are generally seen by the common populace.

Enough with spellcasters already. I'm glad Power of Faerun didn't have a chapter devoted to them

-Well, all things aside, magic would/does have an important role on the sociopolitical chain/scale/whatever you want to call it.
