| Capn Charlie01-13-04, 01:36 AM | I have just recently acquired a copy of Aurora's and though I have just been in the realms for 5 years or so I say it is far and above the best sourcebook I have ever used. It has become a staple in my game and will ever be so. I propose we udate, expand and reincorporate this, as I see it, symbol of the fluff that makes games worth playing. It has been made abundantly clear to me that the current administration is opposed to fluff. If that is so and they wish to remain crunch dedicated why not make Aurora's a free download and allow us to use forums to expand and update it. Sure it would be the gaming equivelant of fan fiction but I think there would be an eager following for it. If I am not mistaken there are some realms game designers that miss the old ways. From a legal perspective is a fan project such as this possible, or legal, on the boards? At the very least we could lobby for a web enhancement for official purposes then "submit" ads to her catalogue, possibly even in a web contest format. At the very least a Realmslore article on the website could be done. I for one think that with popular acclaim on our sides we could change a few things on the boards nad web, even if the will of people can not change what gets put into the books. If all this has been said and quashed before, well I'm sorry I wasted all your time. But if it hasn't...well then I ask you: Is your game enough, without the fluff? The Capn |
| Capn Charlie01-14-04, 06:29 PM | Fair enough, fair enough. I guess I was mistaken. |
| Cunning Linguist01-14-04, 06:45 PM | I would be game, but I don't think Wizards would like it.. They have something along the lines of, "lets not let anyone else do the realms, in case we want to do it at a later stage" |
| Capn Charlie01-14-04, 07:38 PM | Even if it is done by fans? I really see this as the equivelant of fan fiction. As far as I know fan fiction set in the realms has been encouraged. Perhaps a "Classifieds" section, with ads written by our characters? I saw one guy on a thread in the Out of Print section who did a writeup for dull gray ioun stone lanterns. If we didn't infringe on what is already written and just wrote new stuff would there be any problems? |
| J. Grenemyer01-14-04, 07:40 PM | I think it's a good idea. After all, it's not like we'd be selling the stuff we write for a profit. :) |
| Kuje3101-14-04, 10:11 PM | Im hesitant to convert some of those items because they were also written up and referenced in 3e's Arms and Equipment Guide. If you get permission then I'd love to help but WOTC might not allow this because again they took some items from Aurora's and put them in 3/3.5 books. |
| Wooly Rupert01-14-04, 10:28 PM | Truly, what from Aurora's would need to be updated? There wasn't all that much stuff that had any crunch listed, and it was usually quite minor... |
| Capn Charlie01-15-04, 12:07 AM | True, there are few mechanical things that need conversion, and those are minor. It was more the things that have changed in the realms that need to be updated. I am pretty sure Tilverton no longer makes brushes, jars, and porcelin dolls for example. Also, a lot of the prices bother me, 8-15 gp for a tun of ale? Also new rules would allow newer more interesting things to include. I would love to see some Aurora writeups for alchemical items. Wouldn't there also be some additions from thay, what with there being a trading power now? I guess you are right though. What I really want is more of the same, not a conversion. Have any players or DMs out ther made any additions in their campaigns? What would the current prevelance of printing presses in waterdeep have on Aurora's? I'm pretty sure I am not the only one interested in fluff like this, canon or not. So what are your takes on the current economy of the realms? |
| Wooly Rupert01-15-04, 11:52 AM | Okay, this is sorta on-topic... Part of the Aurora's Whole Realms Catalog was a section called "DaRoni's Workshop." The odd items therein are the work of a gnome named Nadul DaRoni. And now, friend DaRoni has been statted out! http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rp/20040114a |
| Capn Charlie01-15-04, 02:05 PM | That wasn't just on topic but dead center. I had completely forgot about artificer items. I forget, can non artificers use them? If so I can see a lot of these making their way into the hands of adventurers, and having always been a fan of gnomish contraptions enjoy the thought greatly. If they are not usually allowed to be used by anyone but the creator, how about making some at double price with a failure chance thrown in at double price? |
| Daybreaker01-16-04, 03:44 AM | I love the catalogue. Great stuff. Not quite sure what you mean by "fluff." I mean, maybe I know, but I could be wrong. Been wrong about that kind of thing before. |
| Capn Charlie01-16-04, 06:14 AM | Fluff, is well, flavor text. Not there for any statistical bonus. Style. Essentially whatever in a sourcebook is in italics, as well as history, and such. For me, it's what seperates an RPG from a miniatures skirmish game. Sadly though, it is one of my weaker points as a dm. My home brew campaigns were always so two dimensional, often with blatant Conan and Thieves world ripoff elements. It was the realms that brought my group back to dnd. |
