Question about Stats [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-12-04, 09:20 PM Ok, Im new to playing DnD but I have been a longtime fan. And I have just made my first character and I want to know what you guys think about his stats.

He is a LN Moon Elf Monk

His stats are

STR- 13
DEX- 17
CON- 16
INT- 10
WIS- 9
CHA- 14

What do you guys think? I think the INT and the WIS might be a little low, but Im moderately happy with everything else. Oh, by the way, thanks in advance for your responses.

08-12-04, 10:41 PM Unless you really need the 14 Cha I would say swap it with the Int. 3E is a good part skill driven, and with any character I create I almost always try to ensure I have at least a 14 in Int, unless the character is supposed to be stupid.
Except for attacking and saves, everything you want to do is based off of skills.

On the other hand, if you want your character to be charismatic, just keep it at 14. There aren't many players who would put their 14 in Cha, and their 9 in Wis when playing a Monk, and I think it's admirable that you do - playing a character you want to play instead of a maxed-out character :thumbsup:

08-13-04, 03:35 AM For a Min-Maxed monk, you'll want to try and have Dex and Wis high for defense. Strength high for attack, Con high for Hit Points, Int high for skill points.

With the 3E rules almost no stat is worthless anymore with the possible exception of Charisma, depending on the character you doing. Those that gain the most benefit from Charisma though are Bards, Paladins and Sorcerers. With Clerics needing it for undead control/turning.

Just really depends on what you going for is all. With the new rule set I tend to put a higher priority on Intelligence and Dexterity followed by Strength and Wisdom, then Charisma and Constitution. But then again most of my characters are Ranger/Cleric types, that multiclass in combat oriented PrCs, especially if I know the campaign will lead to Epic, then once I get to epic I will work on spellcasting ability. I try to orient my BAB to be a min of +16 when I hit 20th. And try to ensure none of my base saves are below +6 if I can help it, and try to aim to a min of +9 for my base saves. Also if I take a PrC I will usually finish all but the last level of the PrC, depending on the PrC, some of them have that nasty habit of changing your Type to Outsider or something else with that last level.

I also tend to go for light armors like Mithril Chain Shirts or Mithril Breastplates. I try to maintain as high as a dex bonus as I can, most of my characters are one of the various elf sub-races.

Alot of us Min-Max to some extent, then there are others that don't do anything unless it gives them a Max of some sort. Those are the ones to look out for. Then there are games I have been in where I have been forced to Min-Max to just keep up with some of the other players (DM's Wife/Girlfriend/Best Friend). And I usually leave those groups not too long afterwards.

Yep, the players in my Drow campaign are finding that Charisma is important for when they want to try and get special things from the House Quartermaster.
And I make it "fair" for everyone by making it a straight Charisma check instead of using skill checks. Otherwise the Cleric and Rogue would have an unfair advantage over the Fighter and Ranger, because of having Diplomacy as class skills.
