Question: History in Faerun... [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-02-04, 01:04 AM I've just started to get into the fascinating series of FR. I'm trying to learn more. I plan on using FR as my campaign setting. There's a lot of information and history to deconstruct. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on such subjects..

- What are the major (important) wars (or even historical events) that have occured between nations/civilizations/kingdoms/etc in Faerun?

For instance, I am inquiring about the historical events that are common knowledge to most people/races in FR. If I knew the ones that are paramount, then I'd know which ones to focus on.

I realize that may still be general and a mouthful, so even highlights for:

- Faerun between 1336 to 1375, the present is one of the big focuses for me. Of all the history listed, which ones should I mainly regard?

in this thread there are several links to timelines. sadly, almost everyone of them is lacking detailed background information, but they should give a pretty good overview.

04-02-04, 08:55 AM The thing is, most Realms people's awareness of history isn't based on the relatively few events to occur Faerūnwide, or happenings that are voguish on messageboards but unknown to most folk. The Realms is fundamentally local and there's little that's common knowledge across the continent. It's based on local, mostly oral traditions. Leading families' ancestry looms above tales of ancient migrations or wars or magic, or recent politickings in the next kingdom. (That said, the broad shape of history is the migration of humans to the Heartlands from the south, the fall of ancient empires, the ascendance of humanity over demihumans, and the rise of the merchant class.) Despite the efforts of the books department, the Realms is not a world of a few broad starkly important things but of thousands of stories and relationships and intrigues that matter to those who know them. And reading up on the Realms-Shaking Events that have happened 1358-1373, which are primarily novel-driven and which perhaps someone will help you with, will tell you less, really, about the Realms than reading the clustered and interwoven happenings in a book like Secrets of the Magister or Prayers from the Faithful, or Ed Greenwood's short stories.
