I know this probably isn't the right place for this thread, but for a character I'm playing tonight, I was wondering about the Speak Language skill.

If I invest 3 ranks in it, do I get three new languages?

Or does it work only once, for one language?

The brief description in the PHBv3.5 had me a bit confused.

Thank You.

In our table, each skill point invested in Speak Language means one language. Of course, you'd have to come up with a pretty interesting story if your human character speaks 12 languages.

-Yup...Though, I have always used two skill points per language. It's a bit harder to become proficient with a language than, say, how to properly climb a rope.

It depend on if it is a class skill or not also. If you are a Bard (which is the only class that gets it as a Class Skill in the PhB) you buy it at the rate of one point for one rank. Any other class needs to spend 2 skill points to get a rank(or one lang.).

Okay, thanks guys. That's kind of what I expected. My guy is a scout and the story is that he studies all of his enemies obsessively, and buys many books on languages and other cultures.

He's level 6 now.
