| Herr Doktor07-24-03, 09:32 PM | A player in my campaign is creating a Ranger who is devoted to Silvanus. However, this player (who usually plays as a rogue) wants his character "Marlak" to have a greed-streak. Marlak also has a fierce hatred for wolves (his chosen racial enemy). Where would these things fit in with the Balance? Would Silvanus sponsor such a person? |
| primemover00307-24-03, 09:57 PM | Well Animal is a valid choice for racial enemies, as most low level "hunter" types often choose. A Ranger can be greedy, nothing to say he can't take the best portion of every treasure, or the best portion of dinner, or the best wine in the house..... greedy is a character flaw that can have lot's of great RP mileage. Silvanus is true Neutral, so I don't htink it'd be weird, though Malar would be a better choice for said character depending on his alignment. |
| Herr Doktor07-24-03, 10:05 PM | He's true neutral. Here's some background: Marlak Evenwood has lived his entire life in Battledale on a small walled cottage in the area known as the Belt. He was mauled as a young hunter while out on the hunt with his father, by a wolf. Since then he has developed a hatred toward these beasts. He even ended the lives of a group of newborn wolves once, though he considers it to be the most evil thing he has ever done... he feels it is justified though as he believes all wolves should be exterminated from the face of Faerûn. He is pretty much entirely devoted to the hunt and archery. His bow is his life. Most of his spare time is spent at practice, he doesn't really get much other pleasure from life. His father is a huntsman and his mother (deceased, she was killed by a brigand) was a homemaker. His mother was particularly harsh on him, so Marlak distrusts women in general. The only person he really speaks to is his long-time friend Sigil, a halfling rogue who dwells in the vicinity and whom he still has contact with. The two have been associates in thievery on more than one occasion. |
| Astanphaeus07-24-03, 10:06 PM | I'd say the greed thing is fine... as long as it's going to be a character flaw, as opposed to being used as a convenient excuse for ripping off other characters. The wolf thing, though... that's another story. If he's going to be devoted to Silvanus, he's going to have a hard time reconcilling that quirk with his faith. And if he starts wiping out wolves, he shouldn't be surprised when Silvanus blocks his spell access. -- A. |
| Herr Doktor07-24-03, 10:08 PM | Marlak is definetly not chaotic, or bestial. He thinks thing through, and plans ahead. He doesn't seem to fit in with that aspect of Malar. Are there any other huntsman-type dieties? :Begins flipping through Faiths and Pantheons: Added: Hmn, this is tough. Any suggestions? |
| Qevelias07-25-03, 02:34 AM | He might be a devote of Silvanus , but if he 's truly a hunter than he's bound to pray to Malar at least some times. A player can have more than one patron deity , but only one will listen to his prayers and give him his divine magic. After reading your story , I would say he's more of a malarite than a silvanite ! |
| Herr Doktor07-27-03, 12:08 PM | Does anyone else have a suggestion or two? He definetly has an evil streak when it comes to the hated wolves, but he's also willing to protect HUMANS and save the day. Wolves are the only exception. He is also devoted entirely to hunting, and prefers to hunt wolves... the manner in which he does so would displease Malar. So where would he get his spells? |
| Desies07-27-03, 12:44 PM | I'm saddened by anyone with a hatred toward wolves! |
| Purple Dragon Knight07-27-03, 12:59 PM | Here's the complete list of deities that grant spells to druids and rangers: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68546 There must be at least one of them devoted to wiping out predators. I'm thinking Talos or Malar right now, although others could perhaps qualify. |
| Alac Luin07-27-03, 01:26 PM | Gwaeron Windstrom, A hunter tracker rangers of the north, all that. Protecting people seems to be valid and wolfs can be a danger to human settlements. I know Gwaeron’s dogma says one group need not wipe out another, allowing both to live in harmony. If the player thinks of wolfs as an aspect of Malar, he would at least have reason, at least in his own mind on why he hunts them. Heck, it could be that he needs to seek atonements every so often going contrary to his gods will. Gwaeron’s clerics are to be CG, NG, and LG, but since he himself is NG, a netral Ranger fits within the one step rule thingy if you use that. |
| Herr Doktor07-27-03, 03:59 PM | Thanks Alac Luin, and the rest of you! I really like that idea of wolves as an aspect of Malar, as well as other predators that are a danger to human settlements. |
