| Orang-Utang01-15-04, 02:08 PM | Using the rules for generating towns combined with the combined population totals for Faerun from the campaign book, could one stat out the class demographics of the entire continent? Assuming one can: Step 1: Establish the total population of Faerun by adding up all of the populations entries from the FR sourcebook Step 2: Divide this total by 50,000 put that number aside. Step 3: Calculate the demographics fro a single 50,000 person metropolis Step 4: Multiply these numbers by the number calculated in step 2 If the demographics seem unfeasible one can increase or decrease the base 50,000 to change the final results. I'm no math whiz so tell me, what's wrong wiht this equation? Will it or will it not work? I think it would make a great set of statistics if it could in fact be established. I'm assuming all of the epic level folks fall outside of this equation and are already documented by their own personal entries (Elminster, Manshoon etc.). |

| Daybreaker01-16-04, 03:34 AM | The only problem I can see is that there might be a lot of 'monster' races that would be hard to make statistics for, unless you just invented them completely. |
| Mirtek01-16-04, 05:53 AM | Well, i once did step 1. I just onted to know the percentages of the different races. Sadly i lost the results, but as far as i rember humans made >73% of the total population. Elves (including drow and evermeet) were about 7% Gnomes were about 5% Or something like this |

At first blush, I would say the one major flaw in your assumption is that all of Faerūn's population is urban. Historically, only a small percentage of the medieval population lived in the cities; the vast majority were in the open land, farming or raising livestock. I realize that this is fantasy, so some adjustment is expected, but I would still expect most of the population to be in the countryside, not in the cities and towns. Thomas |

Thomas Very good point, I think I can fix that. Step 1: The population of each settlement type is added up seperately (all the metropoli, all the large cities etc.) Step 2: Each total is divided by an average population total for that settlement type. Step 3: The average demographic number for each class is then multiplied by the number arrived at in step 2 This will give you demographic information for the populace of Faerun living in settled areas (those settlements listed in the FR sourcebook) To find the rest simply subtract the total number of people living in the listed settlements from the total population of Faerun (this remaining populace is composed of unlisted ruralites) and calculate them as if they were living in a thorpe.* *Before doing the calculation: place 5% of this thorpe population aside and apply a +10 community modifier to the demographic average for Rangers and Druids. If you wanted to, you could even break down the rural populace total into 1/4 thorpe. 1/2 hamlet and 1/4 village. this again, adds more steps. Could this type of equation be done on a program like Excel? Is there an applied math major out there willing to tackle this? I used to know a kid that could work this, but he went off to college to study insurance statistics. I personally have just enough mathematic skill to know I'm not very good at it. Maybe I'm being an obsessive dm, but wouldn't it be nice to know just how many people can cast raise dead on the planet? Of course that would lead to a breakdown of the Faerunian populace by faith-something I'm not ready to get into that just yet (although simple percentages would do). |
| HarperBladesinger01-17-04, 06:52 PM | Page 98 of the FRCS says that Faerūn is "home to more than sixty-eight million inhabitants". Perhaps this isn't much, but guess it helps with the step 1. |
