Does it seem to you that 3e is much more of a power game than 2e or 1e?

With the way 3e is in gaining xp and such, looking back at the exploits of our favourite characters it seems to me they would be hire level then they are (having just taken their 2e level and converted it directly).

Now id dont really like to see anyone over 30th as is but those first 20 levels just seem like they can fly.

Personally im thinking of using some other means of doleing out xp.. dunno.

True very true, and so i will be doing so, i feel the current system is a tad broken but no matter the game is as good as ever.

I wonder what the average PC level is in a FR 3e era game compared to a 2e or 1e area game.. i would bet it would be higher.

Advancing in levels is faster in 3E, but I'd say much of it has to do with that lower levels are nowhere near as deadly as they used to be. I mean, even a starting wizard can actually manage to survive all the way to the 2nd level in 3E. :mymy:

Yep, it sounds too amazing to be true, but I have actually seen a wizard survive to 2nd level with my very own eyes! Something like that simply wasn't humanely possible in 2E, so it may indeed look like wizards in particular are overpowered in the 3E system (albeit 3.5 toned down spellcasters quite a bit).

Then again, monsters in 3E (3.5 in particular) walk over their AD&D counterparts anytime, anywhere. Even something as basic as the orc has it's 3E incarnation about as powerful as the AD&D ogre, and with infinitely more potential thanks to the new class system (even further enhanced by the monster class thing).

Now, while you're probably right in that iconic NPCs of the Realms are weaker than they were in AD&D compared to the PCs, at the same the sort of monsters and other dangers they've fought are far deadlier nowadays. So assuming you even want to compare the two editions (which, to be blunt, is quite pointless) the deeds of the iconic NPCs at least seem more heroic, wouldn't you say?

Well, I suppose those deeds are for the most part simply impossible in context of the new rules, but I don't see any reason in penalizing PCs for that - the iconic NPCs are novel characters, "real people" one might say, and not some random encounters for PCs to test their mettle against. As such, it should be pretty irrelevant what their stats are (I enjoy seeing the famous NPCs translated to mechanics myself, but it's out of curiosity, not to compare my own characters to them).

Yes, and I came to the same conculsion a while ago. We use a different method for XP and leveling, making it similar to 2e, perhaps even a bit slower.
