hello everyone-thanks for even reading this :)

ill get straight to the question...IMC a pretty powerful artificer/mage (which i still have to figure out HOW strong he is)
has created himself an army of golems/automatons and is laying waste to the countryside ranging from the silver marches to turmish looking for 4 magical components that will help him conjure up an even more massive army of elementals in a little isle in the moonshaes, from which he then want to conquer, basically, the whole of north-west faerun, along the coast line...

i wont go into details here, cos its a bit convoluted, but anyways...
rereading that, i actually want to know if u think the whole idea is a bit crack-headed...cos i think it just might be

secondly...why wud this guy do this? i mean, im looking for reasons BEYOND the "i want to have my own empire" sort of thing, thats kinda clichèd...

thanks in advance :)

Scattered throughout the Realms are Portals. Some of these interlink, some are one-way, some go off to other planes of existance, and some go off to off world celestial bodies.

Why not have the mage intent on controlling a series of these portals. Once he can secure these, he can then progress his little war to the planes, which is his actual ultimate goal. Perhaps in one of these planes lies an artifact or being that the mage is after, and only by controlling the north west part of the realms can he achieve his quest.

Perhaps he as become a master articifer and archmage and has his eyes set towards godhood. He has discovered an ancient rite that should allow him to become a god, but to do so, he needs divine sponsorship and power. Lots of power.

He has devised a plan to unite the fabled Rings of Yrix Alquinnar, the Netherese Master of Elements (Yes, this guy does exist and his rings are discussed in the 2e supplement Powers and Pantheons.), knowing that whomever controls all four rings at once becomes the mortal master of the elements and can command any non-divine elemental creature.

Along the way to finding them (They are, for this scenario, hidden along the Sword Coast and in NW Faerun.), he orders his golem minions to take over the Swordcoast north for phase 2 of his plan.

Once the rings are found, he will take them to a place of power he has located on the Moonshaes, where he will enact a great feat of arcane magic to ehnace the power of the rings, destroying them in the process, but allowing him to summon and demand one task by any elmental being, even a god.

He uses his power to summon an elemental god (Let's say Kossuth.). He demands Kossuth to sponsor him to deityship, so he does, and then, as a show of power, he intends to cast an Epic spell draining all sentient beings in the Swordcoast North of power and dumping it into him (Similar to what Karsus did to the gods.). Once AO approves his deity-hood, he will use his god power to make this power gain stable and permanent, and thus a new god is born and the Swordcoast north is laid waste.

Falstaff, ur good
u also guessed that the artifacts he was looking for were from netheril...i had a little prelude written out for the players, showing how the netherese used these artifacts...
but, since my campain is on the way, i think ill turn the rings to bells...just cos i find them a bit less conventional...
but thanks, good idea!
Taythorian, thanks to u too...i now have a way of moving this guy's army round undetected...thru the portals...thanks to u too!

My Pleaseure Avner. I am a keen..sometimes too keen DM and one thing I enjoy is spending hours and hours pouring over my vast collection of 2nd edition and 3rd edtion FR Books and and then throwing all manner of things at my players. To be able to pass only a tiny bit of that on to another DM and then get a 'THANKS' for it makes my day.

I hope your campaign goes well and your players love it too.
