Back in one of the Netheril books though, an elf was reborn several hundred years later as a half-elf (Ouch... no more Arvandor) I assume that in Real life, if rebirths were to occur, it might be that a body would come into being that accesses the same soul/consciousness(memories being stored in body for the most part...) Anyway, assuming that rebirths do occur in FR periodically, who do you think seems to be a reincarnation of previous characters? Mostly i remember this from the Return of the Archwizards trilogy, in which that elven sorcerer seemed to be learning, understanding, modifying and casting spells instantaneously... really made me think of Karsus(as if Karsus could ever be reborn as elven filth! :) ) Of course, Karsus probably can't be reborn, stuck in a time loop as he is. Anyway, it would be interesting if at least some of the significant characters had stories even before their births. Who would Elminster have been in his past life(obviously an idiot, one who hasn't managed to give up the stupidity of his previous life despite thousands of years he's had to grow :) ) I remember from the Immortals, that some immortals who reached the highest level chose to become human and start the story again. Often failing to reach immortality a second time, and more rarely the highest level a second time, before they could become Old Ones. ... The point is that it could be really interesting, seeing how far a formerly great man goes the second time around. ... More interesting as an NPC than as a PC though. Someone might want to use this idea. Azoun IV reborn comes to mind for the future... except that despite his high fighter levels, he's never actually seemed all that interesting to me. The last Coronal of Myth Drannor being reborn would be interesting, for the people who keep wanting to resurrect Myth Drannor in their campaigns... Someone being able to pick up his sword would probably go a long way to being able to actually do something about it. |

Here's one for you...we all assume that the bodies for a reincarnation are just popped up by magic, but what if the bodies had a past life and your hero just gets dumped into a newly vacated body. The original soul is already in it's afterlife but the hero gets his new body...albeit slightly used...along with whatever emotional baggage the DM cares to dump on him. :plotting: |

Every time he died, someone else actually died in his place, and he went on living... of course, his personality did change with each incarnation that managed to wipe out his memories(head injury i presume). Maybe it depended on who got killed. In your case... the sudden occurence of strange and unexpected emotions or cravings for things would be a sign of what body was used. though i think that gods have little trouble recreating the body on their own... still sounds like fun... Maybe it should happen if the priest of an evil god(possibly Shar with her shadow-weave) does it. Someone alive suddenly dies and his body gets reconfigured a little(making the resurrection itself evil). |

Often failing to reach immortality a second time, and more rarely the highest level a second time, before they could become Old Ones. Though the whole Immortals thing was from D&D, not AD&D, which 1e/2e/3e comprise, though the A was dropped in 3e and what was originally D&D, and its continuity with the immortals etc is pretty much defunct. But back to the original question of the thread. I'd find it interesting if certain fiends, least fiends anyways, like imps or quasits, managed to have their essence stripped down to their original petitioner status as larvae, but still keeping a taint of evil, to allow themselves to be reborn as mortals in some way, extending some level of base influence into the prime material with a more subtle hand. And that was a long sentence... but yeah. |
| Zsych02-04-06, 07:13 PM | I know about the Immortals issue. All that i really meant was that even a great person reborn might turn out to be quite the loser, the second time around. A former Paladin, growing up as a thief, or Red Wizard could be rather amusing.... or they could just live out their lives as peasants, and their gods can be ****** off at how little the great hero they sent back down to Toril, achieved(despite their help :) ) |

I'm currently, but slowly, creating a sort of Rebirth'd order if you will. These people remember everything from their past lives basically, to help them in their current form against what they are fighting. In my opinion, if a God chooses to send back Joe The Monkey Catcher, who is exllent in catching Monkies and training them for Wizards, Druids and the like, then he should feel most comfortable doing that in his new life, or want to do something like that. Get what I'm saying? A Paladin who is reborn (by a god) wouldn't led on the path of becoming a Red Wizard. A Red Wizard reborn by a god wouldn't be on the path to becoming a Paladin either. Now, I don't see how any reborn soul can be just accidentl in Realms. Yeah, maybe it happens by the NPC's/PC's own will and what have you, but if a character is reborn in any way shape or form, that character should carry traits from his or her past life and possibly take the same path they did before, but this time knowing not to slap the Troll with a broom, rather this time cut it with fire. |
| NightBreeze02-05-06, 10:04 AM | A reborn hero who remembers everything has a lot of knowledge and A LOT of power.....it would be funny of a first level pc goes to his previous home and takes that staff of power he hid under a flying carpet long ago :) |

But they are influenced by their former selves to do this, or that. So, one could argue the lv. 1 pc is being led by his (or her) former Epic self to go to this small house where he stored a Staff, rather then just knowing its there ;) |
