I have literally never been more interested in playing a game set in the Forgotten Realms than I am since I read this:

http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14049296&postcount=16

I'm seriously considering buying the Grand History of the Realms and maybe some of these new novels, just to learn some more! You can count on me starting an FR campaign the day I get ahold of the 4E FRCS.

I've heard a lot of complaining regarding plans for 4E Forgotten Realms, but frankly, I don't understand it. This sounds genuinely awesome to me!

"Hell yeah, WotC!" I say. "Bring it on and keep it up!"

EDIT: I realize "refound" is not a word. This will be the last time I watch TV and type at the same time.

refound is a fine word. Its got the same meaning as rediscovered. No reason it cant be a word.

and yeah; thats pretty much WotC's goal with 4E realms. They want to get all the people who dont like the way the realms are now to play in them, by completely changeing it.

Great for people who dont like the current realms, crap for those who do.

Yes, well I loved the Old Realms.

But my players didn't.

And the whole charge "by completely changing it"

is just horse pucky. It's still the Realms.

On behalf of all who love the realms until 3.5 I'll say that most of the changes already revealed are c***

Well, I'm a (relatively speaking) old school FR person, and I like the changes too. The only thing I was taken aback by was the whole Tyr/Tymora/Helm love triangle. I really hope they explain that a little better to make it more believable.

No it's not. It is a new setting. The un-sundering of the Realms will change the History of the Realms. After the Spellplague/un-sundering all previous source books, novels, and supplements for the Realms will not be canon and may not have happened.

The funny thing about this is that the book that announced the Spellplague, GHotR, will be useless in 4e. The Sundering changed the history of the Realms and the un-sundering will change it again.

You may like the new setting, but it is a New setting. All other Realms lore will be worthless in 4e even GHotR.

Happy gaming and I hope you enjoy the new setting. :D

That is great. But where did you set your games before this? I mean I can understand not everyone likeing the Realms, but evidently you found a world more to your likeing.

I guess it is nice that I have to loose my enjoyment of the FR so you can enjoy them. Maybe the can rewrite Eberron and we can trade worlds....

That great more confusion for this game...:) Bouh! Oilers :P
That sound strange to me the spellplague and all new hard killing..
The futur is simple more waiting for some remake thing already make, remake.
I don't why all the people always complain what that will change for our game?
You will have the time to take turn if you want to upgrade your campaign to the new edition.. That just some more stuff, some new some old not changing since the begins. They don't always keep the best but what is best anyway? We cannot always live on the back of other and throw them tomato. You can just look at your own nose before talk of other tough. You are better serve by yourself than by other, than make it yourself if you don't like it. Talk in good or bad but talk of it. Talk of it a step forward for make better change. :)

I just finish the prince of lie and the orc king look good . I new trilogy of The Dritzz it a great thing. And the grand history will enlight surely on the old empire and creator race, something like that I suppose. For make game in the past or bring more acuracy in our create campaign it good. I just thinking of my strory will where the main character descend from an ancient race and will have to go in some forgotten place of if forgotten ancestor. I suppose in this book that will bring some enlightment on the history.

Whether the 4E Realms will be set 10 years or 100 years ahead, I for one am looking forward to exploring the next generation of the world. About damn time to have that question answered.

Though my PCs will still have better things to do than saving the world. I mean, it's not like they're the only adventurers around even if all the established big-names were to kick the bucket.

Anyone proclaiming this from this point forward should be considered as lying and treated appropriately.

:::::::::::

The nice thing about the situation is that (assuming we see the timeline jump 100 years forward) we’ll have numerous sourcebooks detailing the history of the setting in great deal during that time just prior to Mystra #3’s fall.

What’s great about the Realms as a D&D setting is its depth of history. Of kingdoms, city states, etc...that have all come before, risen to greatness and then fell, which quite naturally lead to great sagas, ruins, dungeons and adventure.

None of this will go away just because of the Spellplague. In fact, the Spellplage will naturally add to this depth of information.

I for one look forward to adventures centered on the plundering of wizard towers, lich lairs and dragon lairs, as adventurers and treasure seekers dare for riches and power once word spreads that many mages have gone mad or been destroyed.

Of course, not all will suffer that fate, so beware adventurers!

That’s one example of newfound/renewed interest in the Realms brought about by 4E.

:)

And John...don’t pin your decision to leave the Realms on us or on WotC. It’s your call, your decision to make and it always has been. We don’t need your angst interfering with our hobby or our enjoyment.

Angst? Aren't you really being overdramatic.

It is a honest question. Also I am not leaving the Realms...WotC has left the Realms. Have you read their reasoning for destroying Mystra? It has nothing to do with reality of the setting. Or any other thing they are changing. Sorry but I want a RPG setting not some novel shared world.

What did I lie about? When the weave gets destroyed the magic holding Evermeet in place also goes. This causes the un-sundering of the Realms.

The magic of the Sundering, "extends both back and forward in the mists of time." The un-sundering means Evermeet never existed.

1. The history of the Realms will change.

2. The geography of the Realms will change.

3. Rich Baker wrote that the Realms will have 20-30 gods instead of 150+.

4. The weave is gone.

5. The high level Npcs in a setting know for high level Npcs will be gone.

6. Old nations will be gone and there will be new nations.

If you like all of this then good for you. This is a New setting.

I understand that some people want to play in the new setting. It will be interesting and darker. I enjoy the Realms, Planescape, and Darksun. I hope you have a lot of fun in the 4e Realms.

What I don't understand is why you think the changes will be underwhelming.
Baker said that instead of 150+ Gods there will be 20-30. That is not an underwhelming change. It is the loss of more than three fourths of the
pantheon.

1385 DR Year of Blue Fire
First words are, "unthinkable catastrophe."

The weave is destroyed and Dweormerheart disintegrates.

"Magic bursts its bonds all across Faerun and surrounding planes and runs wild."

"Thousands of Mages are driven insane or destroyed."

"Many planes are shifted or destroyed."

Last words are, "the end of the old world, and the terrible beginning of the new."

WotC called the 4e Forgotten Realms a new world not me. How can you call any of these changes that are published underwhelming?
Charles Phipps

10-15-07, 03:32 AM
Let me explain...

First words are, "unthinkable catastrophe."

Corporate Hyperbole.

The weave is destroyed and Dweormerheart disintegrates.

Dweanorheart is a loss.

The Weave is gone but MAGIC remains.

"Magic bursts its bonds all across Faerun and surrounding planes and runs wild."

Which means, what? Monsters? Mutants? Wild Magic Zones? Dead Magic Zones?

:uh-huh:

"Thousands of Mages are driven insane or destroyed."

Which only leaves thousands of Mages. Because their numbers are unspecified.

"Many planes are shifted or destroyed."

Not exactly a big change since most were never detailed.

Last words are, "the end of the old world, and the terrible beginning of the new."

Corporate hyperbole for selling.

Baker said that instead of 150+ Gods there will be 20-30. That is not an underwhelming change. It is the loss of more than three fourths of the

It depends which gods disappear. The Nonhuman Pantheons were never meant to be part of the setting to begin with. If we can get Elves worshipping the Faerun pantheon, more power to us.

They can make all change they want. making just one god what that will change. Absuoluly nothing for you and me we are just playing in that world. They will make us good new strory and good monster. Just look at the number of monster they make in 3.5 edition compared to the 2nd edition. And just the look of of its. Some are really more beautifull. All the new class and prestige class. it really more funny to play the 3.5 than the 2nd edition just for multi-classing. Just imagine the 4nd edition. It will be surely going better and more coherent. Yes some little thing are not going well in the 3.5.

Look the evolution of demon at this linkhttp://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/alumni/20060626a

We are in futur already, we can leave always in the past. Yes we have to learn of our mistake and not remake the same. Just the futur is bright ahead I'm sure in 5 years few will play the 3.5 edition just like it does with the 2nd.

World War II didn't change history, it added to it. World War III starting tomorrow would not change history and mean World War II never happened, it would only add to what has already happened. That is, unless World War III was fought with time machines and people were sent back in time to assassinate Hitler or Churchill or whatever big names there were before their rise to power.

So maybe I'm just thick, but would somebody please explain how exactly are the 4E events "changing history" in the Realms when retrofitting past events, unlike with 3E, is something they specifically want to avoid?
Zanan

10-15-07, 07:29 AM
Well, it comes from the notion that some events are indeed being re-set by the Spellplague, e.g. that high magic stuff which sent the dark elves beneath the surface to become the drow. That's all just heresay and theory-mongering though. Obviously, some people will attribute certain events which may happen to stuff that has been there before (and has since been changed in other editions), but as you say, that's history and the latter is actually written as we speak. So what once has been may become future, but it was still there in days gone by and will always remain there. Unless Kirk & Spock happen by and change history.

10-15-07, 08:06 AM
If you don't think that the un-sundering of the Realms will have any real effect, just think about this one effect.
If the sundering never happened Evermeet was never created.
This results in: -
When Myth Drannor fell the elves could not have retreated there. In fact there could have been not retreat at all.
Araevin Teshurr could not have been born on Evermeet.
The Demonfay could never have attacked his tower.
He would never have gone on the quest to learn the Elven High Magic within the High Lore Gem.
The Elven Crusade could not have left Evermeet to defeat the Demonfay.
The fallen Solar would not have been killed.
Araevin wouldn't have found out what was happening to the Star Elves demi-plane, and promised to return to help them.
The Crusade would not have settled in Myth Drannor to refound it.

So any money you spent buying the Last Mythal series was wasted because the events have never happened.
Another Gnome

10-15-07, 09:34 AM
I don't have a clue about the Last Mythal series, I'm just making guesses here.

Let's say that Weave today is an anchor that keeps past events in place, and tearing the Weave today means that something that happened thousands of years ago is undone, and that reflects back to the present day. If that's what people are concerned about... so what? That is obviously a change in history, I'll give you that, but a change happening purely on in-game terms, and triggered by events that by themselves are not overwriting the timeline.

Even if the outcome was exactly the same, it would be a completely different scenario from saying, "We didn't like Evermeet so in 4E it's no longer there. Oh, and drow never went underground because they make for cool player characters."

Or they could simply have the Spellplague do its stuff, and when people ask "But if Weave was destroyed, how come we still have drow?" they just go, "Meh."

Except that were not going to have any drow in 4th Edition. The rumour is that all the elves are going to be lumped into two types, the wood elf type and the eldarin, who'll be the higher elves. So the drow will just be ordinary elves or eldarin with black skin.
And the Lady Penitent series apears to be taking it that way.

I'm looking forward to the changes as well.

As I've posted before...

I like the realms whatever happens. I've always had an interest and liked reading the novels, the gaming material, anything that had to do with the realms.

Its a new setting... okay. Elves all lumped together... okay. Gods dying off... okay. Sundering and un-sundering... okay. I'll still read about the realms and buy the products concerning them. They can change the name to the forgotten realms of hasbro and I'll still read about it, whether I use the gaming materials or not.

Since I first was introduced to the realms I've always seen it as a continually growing story, with new chapters every month or year and like any story favorite and hated characters have good and bad things happen to them but its the story itself that draws my interest.
Willis_G

10-16-07, 02:43 AM
The drow will still be called drow, but they wouldn't have any of the abilities which separate them from the rest of elves.
Drizzt would probably retain his abilities in the books, but only because he is a big money spinner for Wizards of the Coast. But he probably wouldn't have them in any game stats.
Another Gnome

10-16-07, 04:15 AM
Yet we have designer comments saying they'll probably include PC race treatment for drow in the first 4E Monster Manual. Why do that if the only difference was skin color?

Of course they could treat Forgotten Realms drow in particular differently, but seriously... the probability of WotC stripping drow of all the cool factor in this of all settings is somewhere in the negative numbers.
Stigger

10-16-07, 08:26 AM
Gah... the more I think about this whole temporal merge/undoing/reset/whatever, the more it makes my head hurt. It makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever to be honest.... why wouldn't it just create a divergent reality where no one would notice the difference of the event being undone since it never happened in the first place? I just can't quite see how the entire storyline, as I understand it so far, is even remotely plausible by even fantasy standards...

Rinonalyrna Fathomlin

Araevin Teshurr could not have been born on Evermeet.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

The Demonfay could never have attacked his tower.
He would never have gone on the quest to learn the Elven High Magic within the High Lore Gem.
The Elven Crusade could not have left Evermeet to defeat the Demonfay.
The fallen Solar would not have been killed.
Araevin wouldn't have found out what was happening to the Star Elves demi-plane, and promised to return to help them.
The Crusade would not have settled in Myth Drannor to refound it.

Again, awesome--I thought that story was incredibly silly, and I already consider it to have never taken place!

So any money you spent buying the Last Mythal series was wasted because the events have never happened.

Because it has value only as "canon", not simply as a story? Of course, I didn't like the story, but some people did.

Hello Fingoldfin,

I should apologize by categorizing you as a liar. I let my annoyance level peak and should have been smart enough to not post instead of posting angry.

That said, I still disagree with you. I’ll try reasoning it out instead.

What did I lie about? When the weave gets destroyed the magic holding Evermeet in place also goes. For this logic to hold, you must assume it’s true that the Weave is ‘holding’ Evermeet where it’s at.

As the GHotR suggests, the elves who produced Evermeet brought forth a piece of Arvandor itself by means of a super-massive concentration of the Weave, “...as if it had always been so.” The book goes on to say this event altered the history of the world.

So it follows that one can presume if Evermeet goes away, time also changes.

However, GHotR specifically does not say Evermeet is anchored or in some other way being held in place by the Weave. I am unaware of any other source that suggests this is the case (including Elves of Evermeet; I encourage you all to double check).

Unless someone can come up with a canon source to hold your theory together, it will remain just a theory...albeit an intriguing one for all the possibilities it affords.

It does not help this community for anyone to promote theories as facts (to the tune of stating all prior canonical material will no longer be considered at such).

There, I think that’s a little better.

:)
Fingoldfin

10-18-07, 02:17 AM
Mr. Miscellany,

Thank you for the apology. It is understandable that many of us are a little on edge now. The boards have been on fire since GHotR came out. I was also guilty of posting while angry a few times. I've calmed down some now.:)

Your point about posting theories as fact is well taken. I should have been more clear when I posted. I do still believe it is true or close to the truth.

The theory is not mine it is MarkusTay63s theory. He posted it on another thread I just followed it to its logical conclusion.(all previous sources will no longer be canon)

Chris Perkins said in his blog that every change they made in the Realms is explained in a way consistent with previous lore. He also said that they dropped hints in the GHotR about the merging of two worlds. He also said that some one on these boards figured out what they are doing. Some of the good folks at Candlekeep and a few people on these boards think that he was talking about the un-sundering theory that MarkusTay63 posted.

For the change in the sub-races of elves to be consistent with previous lore they need to change history. To explain new magical traditions they need to change history. The un-sundering lets them change anything they want to in the setting even the map of the Realms.

Many people compare the changes from 3.5e to 4e Realms to the ToT. There is a very big difference. The last sentence of GHotR. Sages in centuries to come mark the Weave's destruction in the Year of Blue Fire as the end of the old world, and the terrible beginning of the new. The designers never said that the ToT would end the old Realms and create a new world. I think we are only seeing the tip of the RSE. I think the changes are much bigger, but I hope I am wrong.

Sorry about the long lecture. :teach: ;)
Happy Gaming :D

Heya,

Actually, I have the hope that the events that will be "changed" shall be the insertion of the video games into the timeline.

Which Video Games? Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 are both quasi-canon already because of the novelizations (which are canon).

The Icewind Dale games, I don't know too much about... So I won't comment.

Neverwinter Nights's plot was full of holes. They never novelized it, and I doubt they ever will because of the sheer amount of damage the game did to the North. They would have to rework a significant amount of history to fit the game in.

As for NWN2, I have no idea. I haven't played it to the end yet, I can't seem to get past the first chapter. It's just not holding my interest.

(I also haven't mentioned the old gold box games because I suspect you weren't referring to them. :))
Stigger

10-19-07, 06:53 AM
Gotta admit I've already uninstalled NWN2... and I seriously doubt that ending is going to get it into canon.
Fabius Maximus

10-19-07, 07:14 AM
NWN is canon insofar that the plague made it in GHotR.
Stigger

10-19-07, 07:51 AM
A plague perhaps, but not too likely that it was the plague mentioned in the game itself...
Rauric

10-19-07, 09:02 AM
Maybe I am missing something. Why would Evermeet be erased?
Stigger

10-19-07, 09:18 AM
Created via big Weave based magic supposedly, loss of the Weave disrupts that magic, which may or may not be anchoring the island still, and possibly catapults it back to Arvandor, from whence it came, presuming that version of the events is true.
Rauric

10-19-07, 09:37 AM
So why didn't it leave the last time Mystra died? If it does go away this time why would it rewrite the Last Mythal series. It is early and I am on my 1st coffee so I am not 100% with it yet. Thanks for the response so far. :D
Stigger

Because that was only a brief disruption to the Weave... kinda like an aircraft being able to make high stress turns for a while, but if it keeps it up long enough, the airframe is going to fail catastrophically at some point (ignoring the fact that the pilot is going to go squish long before your average plane will). As I haven't read the Last Mythal series, I couldn't comment on that point.

Ah, ok. So Evermeet will be sent back to the Plane of the elves then. Most likely. I don't think that will make everything in that series null and void, unless folks were being sarcastic.

The other reason that during the ToT this didn't happened is that the Weave wasn't completely obliterated, it only went wild.

Neverwinter Nights's plot was full of holes. They never novelized it, and I doubt they ever will because of the sheer amount of damage the game did to the North. They would have to rework a significant amount of history to fit the game in.

GHotR has a reference to the plague in Neverwinter. No canon-wrecking stuff at all, just a note that there was a strange plague there in 1372.:) There is also a reference to the city of Undrentide (from Shadows of Undrentide, a NWN1 expansion) on the map of Ancient Netheril. So it's slightly canon.

There have been vague references to the NWN1 events, but none that have had any major impact on the canon storyline, at least. As far as the Gold Box games, I'm pretty sure those have all been incorporated. Pools of Darkness did a massive number on the entire Moonsea Region, but at the end of the game, things were reset right back to the beginning, leaving everyone except the PCs with no memory of any of it, so that doesn't impact anything. Pool of Radiance: Assault on Myth Drannor is referenced, as well, in canon...

I do agree, though - the plot for the single player campaign of Neverwinter Nights (or its expansions) was very lacking, especially in comparison to the Baldur's Gate series. Neverwinter Nights 2 hasn't really amazed me either, in the single-player campaign (I grew bored in the second part, and haven't finished it). The primary use I see in those is as a showcase for some of the things that can be done using the engine and toolset, rather than as any pure standalone game - it's there that those games shine (or should shine, in NWN2's case, but that's another story).

You know, if there's anything that's going to bring new players to the Forgotten Realms, it's the computer games, followed by popular novels (Driz'zt et al), not a radical redecoration of the gameworld... Next time, though, I'd suggest that they separate the single-player campaign development from the development of the engine and player/dm client plus toolset interface. Go more for something like latter NWN, with a number of adventures to choose from. Allow those design teams to focus solely on the design of those adventures, instead of ending up with a 'meh' storyline adventure... but I digress. ;)

How about the Throne of Bhaal game. Is it cannon? According to the game Helm imprisoned Demagorgon some where in Amn. I have not played it in a long time, but it was a great game and Demagorgon was a very hard guy to beat. He kept summoning more demons.

The ToB novel is canon, but not the game.

That depends on how much of its population and who among the notable NPCs it takes with it when it slips back really... the Realms suddenly losing a tremendously large chunk of its elven population seems like a pretty radical change. Who knows though, it could be how they explain the whole Eladrin Elf thing.
