| Reneshat12-18-07, 02:50 AM | It has just been mentioned in an interview that gnomes are going to be in the Monster Manual "as a playable race." So there should be no movement to remove gnomes from the campaign world. Interesting side note, apparently half-elves are going to be in the PHB. |
| GreenKnight12-18-07, 03:08 AM | So there should be movement to remove gnomes from the campaign world. Huh? |
| Stigger12-18-07, 03:59 AM | In other words, what are going to be the effects of having gnomes removed from the 'core races' on a place like Lantan is what I think Reneshat is getting at. I think... yet another thing in 4e to be ignored ultimately for me I suspect. |
| GreenKnight12-18-07, 04:23 AM | Gnomes being put into the Monster Manual rather then the PHB doesn't mean that they're going to be eliminated from the Realms. Drow aren't in the PHB, either. Does that mean that they'll be removed from the Realms, too? Should fans of Menzoberranzan be worried about Drow being a playable race in the MM rather then being in the PHB? |
| Reneshat12-18-07, 06:10 AM | Sorry, I somehow wrote the thing missing a very important word. What I meant to say is they are adding playable options for the gnome in the Monster Manual, so until they are willing to give it the full treatment, it is still playable. Thus, there should NOT (word I somehow missed) be a movement to remove them from the campaign world in a serious way. Something that 4ed FR will theoretically not be getting rid of. Oh, how a single three letter word can be soo important.... |
| Stigger12-18-07, 07:27 AM | Well, that does kinda change the meaning just a wee tiny bit... Though to be honest I wasn't expecting them to rid the Realms of the gnomish race in the first place. Alter them beyond recognition, sure, I could see that, but not dumping them entirely. |
| Rauric12-18-07, 08:57 AM | I think Lantan is in trouble. Not gnomes as a race, but definitley the island home of the little guys. |
| Alediran12-18-07, 09:41 AM | I think Lantan is in trouble. Not gnomes as a race, but definitley the island home of the little guys. Yea, the introductory module to 4th FR will be: "Thar be gnomes on my house, yar!" The whole module consists of a House full of gnomes that must be killed by the PCs. Module's price: USD 49.90 |

They are putting "the most important stuff" in the first source books - the things 'they feel' the majority of players will need to get a game up and running. The Gnomes have NEVER been a major player in the Realms, and have only recently gotten their own Kingdom (RW in a Dragon article, IG Songfarla has existed for centuries). From the 1e Cyclopedia of the Realms - "The Gnomes are called the Forgotten Folk of the Forgotten Realms, for despite the fact that they seem an everyday sight in major cities, and have good-sized communities of their own, they seem unbothered by the world and similarly only rarely become involved with it" Talk about 'run-on' sentences... I think Lantan is in trouble. Not gnomes as a race, but definitley the island home of the little guys. :eek:Lantan is a HUMAN nation, with a large population of Gnomes. The misconception comes from their involvement with the church of Gond, which is VERY prominent on the Isle. AFAIK, Lantan isn't going anywhere. That doesn't mean it will get any coverage, either. Like Nimbral and the Moonshaes, it appears to be mostly a forgotten part of the Realms proper. The only thing I think may 'disappear' is Maztica, because if anything were to be added or changed that would be the most likely. We are seeing some coverage of the rest of the planet in 4e, and since Ed is doing it, perhaps we will see an Anchorome closer to HIS original vision. Personally, at this point, I think the changes to the 'Faerūn proper' maps will be mostly along political lines, not geographic ones. There may be some changes, do to magical turmoil (and the Anauroch may start to become fertile once again), but for the most part borders are going to shift around quite a bit. Thats just my take, but I don't think the changes to the physical world will be nearly as dramatic as I originally feared. |
| MerrikCale12-18-07, 12:54 PM | They are putting "the most important stuff" in the first source books . they have already said that they plan on regularly doing PHBs so expect gnomes and other 1st PHB cuts to come in a year or so. |
| Rauric12-18-07, 01:07 PM | I meant that Lantan and Nimbral probably have a lot of magic laced into the nation so once the Plague hits it's bad time for the inhabitants. I hope Nimbral becomes a major proMask place once the god of Shadows "steals" Illusion and Intrigue from Cyric. |
| Faraer12-18-07, 01:09 PM | Lantan is a HUMAN nation, with a large population of Gnomes.I don't think it is even a large population. |
| Reneshat12-19-07, 12:33 AM | But it's the largest population of gnomes around. |
| Stigger12-19-07, 02:06 AM | Thought the place with the biggest known gnomish population was that village in Turmish... Xorhun or something like that. Best known is probably Lantan, but I doubt its the largest. |
| Reneshat12-19-07, 06:23 AM | Thought the place with the biggest known gnomish population was that village in Turmish... Xorhun or something like that. Best known is probably Lantan, but I doubt its the largest. Granted, I'm taking this out of Player's Guide to Faerun, but merely because it is the most recent book I have that mentions gnomish populations. "Lantan: Home to the largest population of gnomes in Faerun, Lantan is an island nation of wondrous invention and bustling commerce that lies north of the Chultan peninsula." I started this thread because it had been questioned multiple times whether or not they were going to eliminate the presence of gnomes in the Realms, if not entirely, to a large degree, seeing how they wouldn't be in the PHB. Then someone would mention that they would be in the Monster Manual. Then someone who question whether or not they would be playable seeing how monster stats are changing. I noticed the quote, and I thought it answered the questions I had seen around. I picked the name because I couldn't think of a name for it, so I randomly chose that one. It didn't really have anything to really do with Lantan, other than it's high gnomish population. |
| msatran12-19-07, 06:28 AM | Yea, the introductory module to 4th FR will be: "Thar be gnomes on my house, yar!" The whole module consists of a House full of gnomes that must be killed by the PCs. Module's price: USD 49.90 And the two sequel modules. "Thar be gnomes on my boat, yar!" and "Thar be gnomes in my church, yar!" |
| Stigger12-19-07, 06:39 AM | Seems to go along with the whole 3e concept of all gnomes as mad-tinkers... which really conflicts with a lot of the older lore as far as I'm aware. Personally, I'm more partial to the older stuff that doesn't make them out to be almost purely for comic relief. I can understand your point though, and the misconceptions are kinda frustrating, but I've given up on trying to correct that sort of stuff with all the Chosen as the Avengers garbage. At this point, I'm perfectly content to let others wallow in their ignorance unless I'm feeling militant about something... I suppose I'm just sick of caring about something that's about to get nuked no matter what I do, at least at the moment. |
| Reneshat12-19-07, 07:12 AM | And the two sequel modules. "Thar be gnomes on my boat, yar!" and "Thar be gnomes in my church, yar!" If they changed them from gnomes to halflings, I might actually buy them.... |
| Karsus the Mad12-19-07, 07:54 PM | I meant that Lantan and Nimbral probably have a lot of magic laced into the nation so once the Plague hits it's bad time for the inhabitants. Lantan isn't getting any showing in 4e.....I've personally asked such repeatedly... Lantan has never been a magic-centric nation. The state religion, worship of Gond, sees magic as nothing but yet another tool. "magic is shunned" is also a descriptive piece found in much of what little info we have on Lantan. There's no reason or point for the Lantanese to get pricky about what happens in 1385. Magic will still exist afterwards, thus the Gondar, and the Lantanna will continue as usual. Their "power" isn't magical. It's economical, and more interesting to players, technological. As Ed said (paraphrasing of course), Lantan is the powerhouse that can rise to rival magic, but can be kept low key if one wishes. Just covering every retort opening;) |
| Rauric12-20-07, 12:12 AM | Ok, so Nimbral is probably still in trouble tho huh? At leaset Maks will be a better god for the nation of Illusions. |
