Although Jhaamdath returning would be extremely boring, with Netheril and Imaskar returning(albiet pathetically weakened and stripped of most of their coolness :))

It seems to me(vague idea) that if you wanted to bring it back, the city that was shifted to the astral plane, by use of their escape mechanism(forgotten what it was), with all of the people transformed into xxxx .... could be returned using a return mechanism built into the escape system(the system would probably have a system for return when it was safe again).

Or some great psionic master could find the Jhaamdath mythallar equivalent(i mean significance wise), for the city, and realize how to reverse it.

.... Not sure the creatures those people turned into are long lived(yes, i'm shooting almost completely blind here... just a random thought)... but the original inhabitants of the city might still be around... waiting to be changed back to normal.

-----------------------

I wonder if the game designers are working on some long term plan where there will turn out to be some cosmic significance for all of these various returns(even that Dwarven equivalent of Cormanthyr is trying to come back).

FR does need some serious shaking up.

Lots of great powers changing the situation of the world, and the lives of people everywhere in FR might actually be interesting. New alliances forming, some of the old countries vanishing... Maybe a few decently long wars(5-10 years).... And some of the main characters finally meeting their graves.

If your talking about Dhinnilith, then all the inhabitants are dead and absorbed into that caller in darkness:
-255 DR: Jhaamdath destroyed by a tidal wave created by high elven magic. Vannin Dindriex, a high master at the Psiondus, taps into the city's udoxias to enact an epic-level psychoportive power designed to save the city. The untried power was supposed to transport both city and populace to the Astral Plane to avoid catastrophe. Instead, the ill-conceived power failed spectacularly, instantly slaughtering the entire population of Dhinnilith. The bond created by the udoxias, which was aligned to the discipline of telepathy, transformed the city's people into an undead psionic horror - a caller in the darkness. The city and a sizeable chunk of surrounding land were ripped from the surface of Faerun and shifted to the Astral Plane where they remain to this day.

Vannin, who was also slain by his psionic power, was incorporated into the caller in the darkness. At irregular intervals of years or decades, the high master's psyche rises above the undead cacophony of minds inside the caller in the darkness, where the high master's consciousness is temporarily freed. Quite mad after years of becoming a caller, Vanin instinctively uses his epic psychoportive abilities to return the city to Faerun where it silently appears and floats over the Vilhon Reach. These return visits last at most 12 hours or so before either Vannin's psychoportive power ends or his psyche is subsumed back into the caller. The city then returns to the Astral Plane.

I don't think Jhaamdath should return - that would be old-hat. 'Sides, they're pretty much all dead. Maybe a few psionic secret societies have stuck around preserving their past, but there's not a lot for them to come back to.

And if you did drag that city wholly back to the Material, then you'd be letting loose an army of crazed ghosts. Not good.

I had an idea for a psionic campaign where players would quest around for old psionic lore, gather up the udoxias and ultimately wake up Auppenser and resurrect psionics as a strong magic system in Faerun. Then they could start up new psionic nations (say in the Borderlands). It would be like a new Jhaamdath.

Not dead at all. There were tons of survivors. The Jhaamdathans have come to be called Chondathans over the centuries. After Jhaamdath was obliterated, they spread outwards from the region in a great diaspora, settling Westgate and lands around the inner sea and then onward up North.

Chondathan is the most widely spoken language in Faerūn.

Not only have the Jhaamdathan people flourished, but many other escaped to the planes. Nomads used Astral Caravan to escape the onrushing tidal wave to the Astral Plane. Some still live there on the floating god-islands. Some were enslaved by Githyanki. Some sought refuge in Auppenser's realm in Dweomerheart, and they live on after many generations, preserving the old ways.

Some used the psionic power to slip into stasis or suspended animation and may still be uncovered in the ruins of that nation.

Some used the Genesis power to create demi-planes to which they escaped. Some believe that one of the Twelve Cities of the Sword successfully shifted into such a pocket dimension.

Then, of course, there is the psychic entity, a Caller-In-The-Dark that dwells in the Astral Plane that contains the gestalt consciousness of the capital city of Dhinnilith. In a horrible accident, psions failed to save the population from the onrushing wave, and instead turned them into a massive, psychic undead entity. It still shifts into the Material Plane from time to time and causes terrible psychic havoc before slipping back into the Astral.

So, you see, Jhaamdath is still around in many ways. And it certainly had plenty of survivors.

Is there more info on Jhaamdath than what's in LEoF (and related Candlekeep notes)?

Hmmm...

Dhinnilith... i recalled that they'd been transformed into the Caller in the Dark, but not that they'd been slaughtered in the transfer.. as in i didn't know they were now undead instead of just transformed mortals.

And it's the Udoxias that links the seperate minds into one being.

If they were returned to Toril, and the udoxias' power severed... they'd probably end up being individual undead beings.

Then the question would be whether these beings can be transformed into some type of living being.... in one massive act(probably not, but maybe a circle of powerful mages, or a god could manage it).

Hmm... i wonder what Jhaamdath citizens turned into Illithid might be like. They don't seem that advanced psionically(at least on Toril), but the Jhaamdath version of techno-psionics(in that they created powerful psionic tools and items).. coupled with the innate psionic power of a race like the Illithid could be somewhat intriguing.
