Hi,

I'm trying to develop a sequel to this classic module. My premiss is pretty simple the halls have been looted through the years and now it is home to a band of kobolds. None of the looters ever found Rivilar's study and treasure room - so those area's will remain intact but the rest of the complex is looted and crawling with kobolds. Here's where I need help. I need some believable creatures / guardians to inhabit the unexplored sections. They would have been there for a long time (50 years or so), have not looted and would not wander or leave.

I have some ideas -

undead like skeletons and zombies
some aminated creatures like a animated statue
slimes, molds, fungi...

To me that is pretty boring so any other suggestions? PC's will be 3 - 6 level at the time.

Gricks are great! They can be tough, and you can always have a few of them together if you need to make them tougher. They have DR, so that makes it tougher to take them out and they deal lots of damage if they get a full round of attacks. Plus, they are sneaky and can pop out once the whole party is surrounded. Just have them survived on rats the whole time.

You can have a few other predatory creatures that aren't that smart in there as well. These things could have lived off rats and maybe the over-curious kobold. Maybe you can have a couple of creature types that hunt each other? It's a thought.

One thing I have to warn against is placement of the undead. If you put in an undead that blocks the rest of the complex, you can't really have anything else alive behind it. Nothing would get past the undead. In other words, it makes no sense to have the only enterance into a secret wing be protected by a bunch of undead, just to have a group of kobolds in the next room. There is no way that the kobolds could have gotten there. Or the predatory creatures wouldn't have anything to eat! The undead would kill or scare off anything that came through. I placed some undead in one dungeon too early, and I couldn't place anything but undead after it. I didn't realize that the party would be so cleric heavy and the whole dungeon was a breeze for them.
