The more geezerly of us Forgotten Realms fans will remember the Monastery of the Yellow Rose' initiation for the Master of Dragons monk rank: The riding of the remorhaz. A lone monk using spurs and lassoes leaps on the back of a passing remorhaz and rides them, standing up straight, for at least a hundred yards. The "spurs" are made of a heat-resistant metal which is dug into the creature's super-heated back. A single misstep is likely to prove fatal (well, at least in 1st & 2nd ed, before the remorhaz got toned down in 3rd).

Anyway, FR 9 "The Bloodstone Lands" book gives 2nd edition rules for this. Does anyone know if someone has done any kind of 3rd (or 3.5) update for the riding of the remorhaz? Anyway, thanks for any info guys!

Reminds me of "Dune".

As for riding the Remorhaz, some sort of high balance check would be in order, wouldn't it ?

Now that you mention it, it does.

Balance and Ride checks at the very least.

Maybe not Ride, since riding a creature means you control it, not just hang on for your life.

In my campaign, I would have made it 3 successive Balance-checks. Fairly high ones. My campaigns are often a little weird ruleswise though. :) Anyone said wing-it?
