Risen from the Ashes: Hellgate Keep [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-19-03, 08:51 PM I'm going to be running a session where the party is deposited in Hellgate Keep via a gate.

A little background. After a year of imprisonment with the Zhents the heroes find themselves in Luskan. They meet up with a elf ship captain who is in pursuit of a "pirates horde" which actually contains a powerful artifact (storm sphere). After raiding an abandoned temple of Bane in the Spine of the World, the final location of the treasure is obtained. The abandoned temple has the interest of the cult of the dragon who we managed to **** off in the process. The treasure is located on an island far to the north and west of Luskan in the Sea of Moving Ice. There will be a gate in the dungeon with the artifact (which has just been discovered by a Retriever). The ships will be wreaked and the heroes will be stranded on the island by the perpetual storms generated by the artifact. Their only mean of escape (after defeating the Retriever and his Tanari master who gates in from Hellgate) is to enter the gate. Which leads directly to Hellgate Keep.

I am in search of knowledge as to what, at the present time, exactly occupies Hellgate Keep? I would like to keep this campaign consistent with the current timeline which I think is 1372 DR? By that I mean the Keep is a ruins after the Harpers and The Mistmaster destroyed it. What now? What sort of events are occuring there? If nothing "offically" then what could happen?

I'm really looking for a good way to tie this in with the rest of the campaign which revolved around us uncovering various operations in the Dales involving cooperative forces of House Jaelre drow, an unknown group of Underdark drow and the Zhents. But any of our enemies up to this point could be involved. The Zhents, House Jaelre, the Cult of the Dragon to be specific.

Any suggestions for ideas would be welcome as I am a blank slate for this one having DMed the past year and a half (game time). Also any links to info on Hellgate Keep including a map would be awesome since I am a poor map designer.

09-19-03, 10:02 PM yeah i've seen that popping up everywhere in my searches. If I could get a hold of a copy by sunday night I would definitely do so but I am under some time constraints and looking for rapid info and ideas. Thanks for mentioning it just the same. :)

It's a download, pay the 5 bucks and download it at that time. You can get it before sunday night. :)

09-19-03, 10:04 PM You might also want to check out the FR website at WotC and look at Eric Boyd's "Mintiper's Chapbook" series. One of them is set in Hellgate Keep (pre its destruction) and has particular reference to Bane ....

09-19-03, 10:21 PM Thanks. I've now read quite alot about the history of hell gate keep. I guess I'm really looking for fresh ideas of what COULD be happening there in the present. AFTER all this has occured.

09-20-03, 12:05 AM I think the only thing going on there now is Turlang and his treants reforesting the area. They are keeping everyone out.

09-20-03, 12:44 AM Don't Forget about the Daemonfey. The Tiefling Fey'ri people elf things of naughty evilness. They should be hiding out there and raping sun elves to increase they blood lines, but that is a secret.

09-20-03, 12:50 AM Yes I have thought about that. I am wanting to tie it in with the demon that is also looking the artifact. He gated in to the location of the artifact from Hellgate keep. Perhaps he is in league with these half fiend elves? Helping them capture and mass rape sun elves?

09-20-03, 12:53 AM I remember an adventer in a Dragon. It was a book of vile darkness suppement that had to do with the Yuan-ti. Where they ran a brothel on an island. They were trying to make a drug that turned everyone on the island into fiends under their control. Gaining the fiendish template. That might be a good way to go with it.
