Rogues? Can they still speak Theive's Cant [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-07-07, 01:57 AM Been Looking through all the books and can't see thieve's Cant mentioned anywhere? Does it no longer exist? and If it does exist. What is it called?

02-07-07, 02:52 AM It's mentioned in a couple of places, but it's not on the language charts. I see no reason why you couldn't just treat it like any other language, though.

02-07-07, 11:24 AM D&D 3.0 had the Innuendo skill, which was used to deliver hidden meanings, like Thieves' Cant did in the previous editions of the game. In 3.5, Innuendo was folded in the Bluff (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/bluff.htm) skill.

If I were you, now that we are given this golden opportunity, I would assume regional cants, associated with different guilds. What thieves guild would want thieves from a rival guild to know what they are saying?

But they did, it's right there in the Bluff (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/bluff.htm) skill description:
Delivering a Secret Message
You can use Bluff to get a message across to another character without others understanding it. The DC is 15 for simple messages, or 20 for complex messages, especially those that rely on getting across new information. Failure by 4 or less means you can’t get the message across. Failure by 5 or more means that some false information has been implied or inferred. Anyone listening to the exchange can make a Sense Motive check opposed by the Bluff check you made to transmit in order to intercept your message (see Sense Motive).

On a related note, does the intended recipient automatically understand the message if the speaker succeeds in his Bluff check, or does he also have to succeed in his Sense Motive check? The Bluff skill description makes me think its the former (since it says: "Anyone listening to the exchange...", implying that the intended target automatically understands the message, and anyone else listening on the conversation might attempt to divulge the information hidden within), however, the Sense motive description is a bit more vague.
