| Tiernee07-27-05, 11:26 PM | As I am on the verge of designing a Temple to Mystra, I'm looking for ideas from everyone on what kinds of strongholds their characters have and have had. One of my favorite things to do when I play is develop my character along to the point where they can build a place to call home. My new temple is still very much gray matter in my brain at this point, but when I get some solid thoughts, I'll come back and add to the thread. |
| GothicDan07-27-05, 11:50 PM | Create a great statue out front that is shaped like the sign of Mystra, and via illusory magic, create the rippling blue-white ribbon up the center of it. Her holy symbol on the floor in mosaics is good, too. Maybe some busts of the most famous wizards and Sorcerers (evil or good, as they all added to the research of magic) lining a Hall of the Arcane. Small shrines for Azuth, Velsharoon, and Savras, perhaps, as well. |
| Darrian07-28-05, 08:32 AM | Where are you planning on building your new temple to Mystra? Darrian |
| Tiernee07-28-05, 11:08 AM | It currently appears that it will be in Tethyr, as Lake's made a sizeable contribution to another party member's stronghold there. Although her nagging thought is that the one to Mystra in Waterdeep isn't big enough, so that may be where she chooses to leave her mark. |
| Darrian07-28-05, 01:32 PM | I like the Waterdeep idea. Would you change the image of "the House of Wonder"? from the picture CoSW pg 42. I love the the current look. Has anyone else noticed that the leader of the church there is LE and a Necromancer? I find that very interresting. Darrian |
| GothicDan07-28-05, 02:27 PM | It's because the former Mystra was LN. The fact that the current NG Mystra still allows him to be present is a sign of the fact that she isn't overly biased towards Good, really. |
| Darrian07-28-05, 02:31 PM | When I wrote interresting, I meant thought provoking for a DM. I was not judging. Truly one would have to be divine to be NG and not biased towards good. Darrian |
| Dielzen07-28-05, 05:19 PM | She does, however, lean to LN. She also was smart enough after the ToT to try to keep things the same as they were as much as possible (hence why we don't venerate her as "Midnight") in order to make the transition easier. |
| GothicDan07-28-05, 05:24 PM | Darrian, I knew you weren't judging, at the moment. ;) But I know your general feelings (and a LOT of peoples', actually) towards Mystra, and I was using your pointing out this NPC to highlight the truth of Mystra's nature, for anyone, really. I used to dislike the NG Mystra. Now I don't dislike her any more than I do any other deities of magic. I think she's a really tragic figure, really, who is destined to continue shifting towards Neutrality, eventually. |
| Darrian07-28-05, 06:53 PM | I can see where you are going with that Dan I am a little confused how someone who is NG can lean towards LN. Isn't that 2 steps away? Darrian (LE sometimes leans towards CG) |
| GothicDan07-28-05, 07:39 PM | More 3E rules. ;) One can be Neutral Good with both Lawful and Neutral tendencies. :) |
| Kuje3107-28-05, 07:43 PM | More 3E rules. ;) One can be Neutral Good with both Lawful and Neutral tendencies. :) Wish they left Midnight/Mystra LN, like she was in the Time of Troubles modules and Hall of Heroes. :) |
| Tiernee07-28-05, 10:43 PM | I like the Waterdeep idea. Would you change the image of "the House of Wonder"? from the picture CoSW pg 42. I love the the current look. Darrian Yes, every leader of a church leaves their mark in some way or another. Though in Lake's case I'm not sure what precisely she would change. She has some evicting to do first ;) |
| GothicDan07-28-05, 10:49 PM | Wish they left Midnight/Mystra LN, like she was in the Time of Troubles modules and Hall of Heroes. I do prefer a Lawful god of magic, myself. Why? Because it's her job specifically to maintain, control, etc., the Weave. Which is why I also didn't like her being CN in the Netheril set, really. |

It seems hard to tag Mystra with any specific alignment for too long as she is continually re-inventing herself, and the alignments of the Chosen certainly run the spectrum. |
| Darrian07-30-05, 11:11 AM | Tiernee I have a thought, Regardless of where you build your temple to the magic goddess, I think you have to put as many permanent spells there as possible. Give it a carnival funhouse feel. Remember, the more weave you use, the happier Mystra is. Maybe you could hire a bunch of slightly abnormal types and have them run the place for you. (you know, carnies). "Mystra's Fun House" I love it! Darrian |
| GothicDan07-30-05, 12:13 PM | Mystra does seem to like reincarnating, doesn't she? And I do agree with Darrian about the standing magical effects. I believe in one of the 2E sources (was it Volo's Guide to All Things Magical? Hm.), there was a special holy grotto of Mystra which effectively made all spells cast by Mystrans within its area to function at maximum effect. Do something along these lines - enchantments and evocations that would aid in both the defense of the temple, and the ability to impress outsiders. Maybe a constant, soothing, illusory chanting in the background, praising Mystra, or speaking very subtle arcane words. And if you listen long enough, and hard enough, there's a chance that you may actually learn a new spell. ;) |

It depends on whether it ends up being Extreme Makeover: House of Wonder or I start from scratch. I'm still on the fence. |
