| Thwyvylyn11-17-06, 10:38 PM | Do I actually need the Waterdeep book or can I get by with FRCS, PGtF, and the general info online at this site and the various fansites here and there? |
| Lord Karsus11-17-06, 10:48 PM | -I think you'd be able to wing it, but CoS:W really has a lot of little detail- stuff that is good to have, but not ultimatley neccesary. |
| Dark Wizard11-17-06, 11:05 PM | You can probably get by with the FRCS & etc. There's a rough map of Waterdeep in The Savage Frontier, available for free from Wizard's Old Editions Downloads. The original Waterdeep and the North 2e book has a detailed poster-sized pull-out map of Waterdeep. I'm fairly certain a few other books on Waterdeep have the same. The older edition books are nice if you can get your hands on them. If you really want 3e options (PrCs, feats, spells) and updates for placing a game in Waterdeep, then consider City of Splendors: Waterdeep. For regional books, definitely flip through them at the store before you buy them since they are more narrowly focused (bookstores like Barnes and Noble probably still have copies on their shelves). Personally, I would get CoS:W just because it's easy to find a physical copy and it provides a 3e presentation of the city which gives a good look at the city. It also makes use of the guild feats in DMG II, which could add flavor to the game if you use that system. |
| Scererar11-20-06, 12:24 AM | you can get by, but why? check out the 2e boxed sets for an inexpensive way to get the info. check out piazo it is about $4. IMO the 2E source has more lore and playability information. check it out:) waterdeep has entirely too much flavor to just get by |
| Faraer11-20-06, 06:54 PM | The answer's self-explanatory. Yes, you can run Waterdeep without detailed sources, but (a) it will differ substantially from the baseline Waterdeep and (b) you're making needless work for yourself. |
| The Simbul11-22-06, 07:50 PM | Buy a used copy of City of Splendors: Waterdeep online (Amazon, Ebay, Half.com, etc). You can get the players to chip in if you dont really want to shell out that much, and combined with the reduced price for it being used, four of you could get it for less than $5 each...I spend more than that on my pre-game venti soy vanilla latte, and I can get alot more use about of such a detailed sourcebook than I could from an overpriced caffeine burst....in fact, as a player I would gladly forfeit my caffeine money for a well-prepared and well-read DM, since I wouldnt have need for the caffeine to keep me awake. The book is extraordinarily useful if your campaign is based within/around Waterdeep. Waterdeep is dynamic enough for you to run a campaign from levels 1-20 without ever leaving the Waterdeep region itself (i.e. Waterdeep + Skullport, Undermountain, surrounding enviroments, etc), and the book has tons of invaluable information for such a campaign. |
