| TomCosta08-07-03, 02:37 PM | Anybody remember what sort of armor these boys where in the books. As I recall, Regis had a mithral shirt at one point and the Bouldershoulder Brothers while both having ringmail originally were upgraded to chain for Ivan and apparently magic robes for Pikel, though maybe hide as well (or reinterpreting the ring as hide) -- neither carries a shield IIRC. Here's another thought, what about Catti-brie's bow being a brilliant energy weapon? It certainly seems much more powerful than a plain old +3 bow. Thoughts. Thanks, Thomas M. Costa THOMASC148@aol.com |
| Kilthius08-07-03, 06:36 PM | Regis - Mithral shirt I think Drizzt and Cattie-Brie - Mithral Chain Bruenor - Mithral Plate (at least in the novels). Wulfgar - Hide Thibbeldorf Pwent - full spiked plate Ivan - Can't remember, but chain sounds right Pikel - none - druidic vestments Danica - none Cadderly - none All of these character would have magical enhancements to their armor, and Pikel, Danica and Cadderly would probably have other forms of protection (magical bracers/rings/vestments, etc). |

It certainly seems much more powerful than a plain old +3 bow. Well, it has other powers besides being a +3 weapon (like that everlasting quiver of arrows), but +3 weapons are powerful. :) Also, sometimes the way weapons are described in novels (including RAS's novels) makes them seem more powerful than they really are. After all, the weapon will never miss or fail to hit the enemy unless the author needs it to. |
| Kilthius08-07-03, 07:27 PM | It wouldn't be Brilliant energy - it damages objects and constructs. |
| Monch908-07-03, 07:42 PM | Tom, Regis - Mithral shirt I think Drizzt - Mithral shirt (RAS clarified somewhere) Cattie-Brie - Mithral Chain Bruenor - Mithral Plate (at least in the novels). Wulfgar - Hide As for Taulmaril, I was trying to tackle that bow next (see my other Salvatore conversions). I'm torn between giving it the thundering property or the holy property. The thundering because of the way it's described in the novels of killing things and making a noise out of it (critical hit with thunder) :) The holy, because of the way it seems to cut through evil enemies, (outer planes, drows). Monch |
| Kermez08-07-03, 08:00 PM | IMO, it would be a force weapon. (See Arms and Equipment Guide, page 96.) However, I haven't yet given any though as to any other aspects of Taulmaril (enhancement bonus, other special properties, etc.). |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin08-07-03, 08:03 PM | Originally posted by Monch9 The holy, because of the way it seems to cut through evil enemies, (outer planes, drows). This is only because those are the types of enemies Catti-brie fought often in several novels, nothing more. I don't recall the bow being described as having "holy" properties of any kind. The fact is, Drizzt can Co. are always fighting more evil enemies than neutral (or good...:P) ones, so any weapon they use can be "rationalized" as a holy weapon even though there is no logical reason for this, especially not in the novels. |
| Frodo Lives08-07-03, 08:17 PM | I remember that in Streams of Silver when Catti-Brie tested the bow it shot an arrow into the wall and was buried halfway up to its fletchings. I would also think that it's something a little more impressive than a +3 bow. The bow and the arrows are probably pretty enchanted, although it's only speculation because AFAIK noone has use one of the arrows on any bow other than hers. |

I would also think that it's something a little more impressive than a +3 bow. How do we, the readers, quantify how powerful a weapon in a fictional world is supposed to be? How can you tell that an arrow that is buried halfway to its fletchings must be more powerful than +3??? The fact is, +3 weapons are very powerful and very uncommon--some people are talking about them as if they are some of the most mundane things in the game! And the fact is the power of weapons in novels are sometimes played up a bit and described in great detail, making it seem like the said weapons are more powerful than they really are. The bow and the arrows are probably pretty enchanted Of course they are--+3 is a very high level of enchantment, with +5 being the highest for a non-artifact item. although it's only speculation because AFAIK noone has use one of the arrows on any bow other than hers. Huh? This is a little unclear. |
| Kuje3108-07-03, 08:50 PM | You could convert it from the 2e version. It was written up in the Magica Encyclopidia 4 book series, and I believe it's also written up some where else in old realms lore. If no one has it I would be more then willing to post the info. |

Just a perspective. Working on the new 3.5e. I got to rationalize a lot on these weapons. In the book Passage to Dawn, Cattie went against a Bebilith (DR 10/Good), Chasme? (DR 10/Good), Manes? (DR 5/Good or Cold Iron). The ? are for non-official 3.5 conversions. Monch. |
| TomCosta08-08-03, 12:19 PM | Thanks for all the responses everyone. I like the force weapon idea a lot for the bow. It solves a lot of potential problems that brilliant energy posed, but also helps explain the high kill rate, the streaking bolts of energy effect, and some other matters, such as overcoming DR in 3.5E (the DR wouldn't stop the force effect). Cool. I looked in the Encyclopedia Magica, however, and did not find a write-up of Taumaril. The only write-up I found was that Catti-brie had a +3 bow in the Heroes' Lorebook. If I'm mistaken, I'd love to see a better 2E write-up to convert. Thanks again all. This was helpful. |

This was helpful. 1st book of the series, page 205 bottom right corner or page 206 top left corner (this is probably the one you want.). It's called Bow of Heartseeking on page 206. |
| TomCosta08-08-03, 03:04 PM | Not trying to be pedantic but just because the bow is called Heartseeker doesn't mean its a bow of heartseeking. In fact, I would argue it doesn't have that property because she rarely gets instant kills against big guys (though she often hurts them pretty bad), only the nameless hordes. Does the entry specificall say the bow of heartseeking is used by Catti-brie or called Taumaril? |

It is a bow of Heartseeking, Cattie Brie or the person who used it before her just named it Taumaril. However it is still a Bow of Heartseeking, which is on page 206. |
| Monch908-08-03, 07:29 PM | Just curious, What exactly are the effects of a force weapon. I see it's a +3 (!) enchantment but with only +1d6 damage. Is there something more to that? Monch |

| Iakhovas08-09-03, 12:27 PM | Does anyone own Card 24 of the 1992 Fantasy Collector Cards? I bet it has a picture of Cattie Brie on it. If so, then Heartseeker on page 205 *is* Taumaril. |

I would still go with this one from page 206. :) This type of bow (self or composite) always has a +3 bonus to hit targets. It acts as a normal magical bow, except when a sufficiently high attack number is rolled. Then, the arrow it fires strikes directly at the targets heart (if it has one), slaying the victim instantly. Attack roll required are as follows: Opponent Attack Roll1 Up to Man Size = 21 - 23. Larger then Man Size = 22 - 23. Metal or Stone2 = 23. 1 Consider only the bow's bonus of +3 2 If the foe is using a spell or device that has transformed it into this material. Certain creatures (such as elementals, golems, and undead) do not have hearts, and are not affected by this weapon. Shape shifting creatures (such as dopplegangers) are not affected by its killing power, either. |
| ^Graff08-10-03, 10:02 PM | *bump* I always assumed that Cattie-Brae's arrows were shocking arrows. If they strike a bag full of smokepowder, they cause it to explode. That doesn't seem like a force weapon. And sparking and glowing sounds like electricity to me. |
