Hello, recently I obtained the Serpent Kingdom book, anyone here thinks the book was inspired by the Neverwinter Nights game? In the game there is also a creator race who were reptilian, created the nether scroll and were in hibernation akka the sarrukh of mairshaulk. Also the book it talked about the wars the Sarrukh had with the Phaerims about 30000yrs ago which the Phaerims sort of won when the Sarrukh destroyed one of their own realm in the war. Anyway I was of the opinion that the Phaerims were later creations by the Imaskari, what gives? The book also mentions the Shadowking which destroyed the HaNaga King Terpenzi, does anyone knows who this guy is or where can information about him is found?

If anyof this has already been discussed I apologize in advance.Btw Serpent Kingdom is a great book and I recommend everyone to get it.

Most likely that game is based on Ed's notes since that race was mentioned way back in 1e. :)

1) The Sarrukh have always been a creator race, and they have always been the creator of the Nether scrolls. The people in NWN where the Sarrukh, and NWN took that out of a allready existing FR lore.
So, Serpent Kingom did not draw inspiration from NWN, rather it was a book detailing the serpents of Faerun, who have already been talked about in some detail in the past. (thou not as much as they are in serpent kingdom)
Neverwinter Nights is after all a Forgotten Realms CRPG, and they do build there games in side a allready existing lore.

2) The Phaerimm are a hard nut. Some say that the Phaerimm used time travel to go back in time, to stop the Sarrukh from ever creating the nether scrolls. Others, like me, like the idea of the Imaskari cloning Phaerimm from some long dead remains they found, and recreating them. I put no lesser/greater value of the cloned version and the natural version, but some do.

3)As for the Shadow King.. I think there is something out there on him, but I can't recall where I read about him. Other will come and tackle him I think.

Sarrukh were first mentioned back in the 1st Edition book REF 5 Lords of Darkness, which was about Undead. There is a Sarrukh mummy featured.
Or at least that is the first mention of them that I know of.

that being sai d I suspect the fact that they included a huge amount of lore on the previously almost untouched race was due n part to NWN.

Thanks I am not much familiar with 1ed material. ANd yes i suspect that nwn propablly force them to release more materials about the creator races. One thing that surprises me is that Humanity is classed as one of the creator races and not elves :D . Somehow the reasons the writer gave for their downfall dosen't seems to jive with such a powerful race, rebellion by their slaves? Not when you have the power to shape their body at will, killing them! Starvation? Come on the sarrukh were never so plentiful anyway! The Khaasta? The sarrukh created the Nether scrolls, imho they are powerful enough to compete with any demonlords! the king of the Orkoth clan could defeat Demogorgon in the BOVD!

Anyway the book hints at undiscovered nether scrolls hidden in tombs the netherese never discovered. I think it is a nice plot line for really epic adventurers.

Isn't Larloch referred to as the Shadowking ?

I don't think NWN had that much inpact. Rather, the book was a long time comming from Ed.

1) Humans have always been a creator race, elves came from there own plane a long time ago and was not born on this plane, so they cannot become a creator race.
2) The Sarrukh, or more like, ba'etith clan, made the nether scrolls LONG after the fall of the Sarrukh empire. And the Netherscrolls are not that powerful unless you have the will to use it. After the elves got them, it did not flare up a magical might like Netheril.
3)The Demonlords in BoVD are really underpowered, made without epic rules, and can't stand up against a advanced Pit fiend even. Lots of things can take down one of them.
4) Sarrukh are arrogant and lazy, decedent and spoiled. That's what you become when you super powers, however, it is also why they fell. When you leave all your security to Yuan-ti, and all your magic to nagas and both of these hate you. It does not take long before they pay of a Dragon to take you down while you sleep. There are so many ways for empires to fall when the people living in them hate the leading class, no amount of power can stop that rebelion them.

I think they are reffering to a Bard in serpent kingdom.

I agree with that.
Someone needs to redo them with the epic rules. I'd try, but it's finals week *shudder*
Them and the celestial paragons all need redone.
Art work for the arch-feinds is nice though, really nice

Check out Dicefreaks Gates of Hell, they redo the whole Hell thing. There your average super devil will lay around CR 60, with super evil semi-divine powers.

Those stats are terrible and frankly they were stated up to humor people who wanted their PCs to go beat them up and loot their corpse. It's one instance of Monte not living up to my expectations (which is rare event admittedly).

Prince Levistus of Baator for instance was previously involved with an ongoing war against both Set and Sekolah over the size of those two deities domains on his layer of the 9 Hells (ignoring 3e FR making a mockery of the cosmology). Levistus was winning and Set's domain at least was slowly shrinking.

Going by BoVD stats this should be impossible. The BoVD stats get junked when they collide with story, history, and flavor text. Stats will always lose when they conflict with those elements of the game. But that's just my opinion.

I found some information about the Shadowking. Apparently it has something to od with th Shadevari, they are a race of primordial beings who tried to help Shar overome Selune. However before that could happen they were trapped by Savras in a dimension. The key to that dimension was the "Shdowstar" which the book mentioned.

Some more about the Shadevari is detailed in the 2E product Villain's Lorebook, as well.

I always thought the arch-fiends and celestial paragons should come off as 'less powerful than a god, but stronger than anything else'.

I mean, the arch-fiends are the ones who keep a grip on the Abyss, the Hells, and the Glooms of Hades. They should be able to handle their own flunkies without much trouble!
