Hi,

I just read the Article about the Atari University and checked that there will be a D&D online Game! That made me quite happy, and i continued reading only to mark that it will play in Eberron! The new Strategie game will also play in Ebberon, so the only game that definitly uses FR will be Neverwinter Nights 2. My only hope is that there will be some FR Servers for D&D online. I think it would be   :weep: :weep: :weep: if it would play in that EBBERRON! I mean, it's okay if there are Ebberon Servers, but the realms are quite better. Does anybody have further information for me to hope?

Demon Stone is a Realms game, even if it's not true D&D.
And there's a fairly strong rumor that Baldur's Gate 3 is in development.

As for D&D Online, considering the expected behavior of people populating those games, I don't consider it a big loss not to have it set in FR. I mean, who cares what world it's set in when chances are that the first guy you come across is named 1337 haxx0r0r anyway...

Also Neverwinter Nights 2 will be in the realms.

It's just a marketing plot by WoTC to advertise the new world they created. The D&D RTS is also set in Eberron. When people lost interest in reading the popularity of the Forgotten Realms went through the roof with the release of the Baldur's Gate series. They're probably hoping to do the same to Eberron.

What is there for me to tell you? When Forgotten Realms became full-fledged in the late 80's and popular in the 90's, there are a series of computer software based on that world, many of them are in their 5-inch floppy (and I do mean floppy) disk format. Not to mentioned a novel line and comic book series.

What was FR in the late 80's, is Eberron today: a new setting the company is investing on. I'm just glad I lived through it all.

Yep, the old Gold Box games (Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, etc) were great. Simple but great. Loved my Cleric, that I dual classed to Wizard and then transfered to Silver Blades. She kicked major butt.

One can also lament "Whywasn't it Greyhawk?". It is the "default" game world. The answer is that Ebberon is the shiny new toy that is being played with and pushed down our throats at this momment. I would prefer either FR or Greyhawk over Eberron, but we can do naught but gnash our teeth.

Hah!

There was a time in the late 80's and throughout the 90's where GH fans were so angry at TSR for hyping and promoting FR. For them, it is akin to shoving "Faerun down their throats."

Yes, makes me miss the good ol' days of 25 in every stat and maxed out ranger/wizard who casts in full plate. Ahhh...the good ol' days.

sides why the heck SHOULD they ONLY publish FR games guys?

give the rest of the campaign settings a break, those who complain sound like a spoiled petulant rich kid complaining that the begger down the street was given a cookie

:D

You just made my day. I hope they do this with some of the people who worked on the original games, as they were undoubtedly two of the best RPGs ever. Baldur's Gate + 3.5 Edition rules = a (very likely) happy gamer...

But aren't you a god by the end of BG2? What, does the entire cast of the game just sing "Where Do We Go From Here?" For fifty hours?

As much as I love BG 1 and 2, I wish they had moved on to a different plotline. As far as I can see there's no way to make a decent story without busting the characters back down to first level, starting out as Epic, or doing some sort of awful prequel starring Gorion.

Oh well, at least I'll get to listen to a few hundred more hours of Minsc phrases.

P.S. I kind of like Eberron. I'm all for giving it a chance to find its footing before we declare it crappy.

They just want to use the name Baldur's Gate. :)
I'm guessing new 1st level PCs and plenty of referrences to BG1 and 2.

At least that's what my nose tells me. ;)

Having done a little research of my own (I looked at some chat rooms, and a few rumor sites) I have found a little more heresay:
1) the game takes place in "the early days of Baldur's Gate
This could mean that the plot line will take place concurrent with or slightly before the first game, or in the early days of the city of Baldu's Gate. Either way I dislike the idea, since I hate prequels and in no way want the quest/plot of the third one to be subordinate to the quest/plot of the first two. IMO it would be better if it were far into the past. I'd like to see Myrkul and Baahl again.

2) you may run into Minsc
Damn. This means it takes place around the time of the first game, or at least not that far beforehand. My only hope is that you meet him in Rasheman, not Baldur's gate.

The first time a bunch of PCs successfuly camp Elminster, kills him, and shouts "Pwn3d" across the zone, we'll get the "Who screwed up and made FR the MMOG setting?" version of this thread.

Designers do not build MMOGs with the intent to only attract RPers. RPers make up a niche market in MMOGs, just like they do everywhere else.

That's what all the market studies show.

Get used to it...

Get over it...

I'm not trying to be mean, just trying to save you some heartbreak.

If the FR is turned into a MMOG, the flavor in game from your fellow PC's won't even remotely resemble the atmosphere from the novels or the pen & paper material, and you'll hate the MMOG because of that.

You're building up your hopes that the experience will be like the RPG, and probably won't be able to stomach the concept of standing around doing nothing with a LFG flag over your head.

Few MMOGs have a compelling enough atmosphere that makes the game appealing despite the inability of your fellow gamers to go along with your definition of RP.

Final Fantasy XI does a pretty good job of this, as does City of Heroes.

Actually I am really glad that D&D Online won't take place in the FR.

Just for the reasons Kid SixXx already mentioned: Nothing would screw up the canon storyline more than a MMORP. If 3.x has sincerely wounded the canon FR storyline, a MMORPG would give the final Coup de Grace.

Canon would be another issue.

Flame wars at this board start over everything from out-of-print stuff to novels.

All you need now is for people to start stating that anything happening in the MMOG is "official" to add yet another degree of separation between game lore and accuracy.

Eberron does not have strict adherance to "canon." The heroes of each personal campaign are the heroes of Eberron, and it's accepted that there is no centralized canon, only a framework for further adventure.

Factor in the flashy pulp fiction and quasi-fantasy elements (ie. Skyships, the Lightining Rail), and it means that Eberron is perfectly suited for a MMOG.

I had my misgivings about Eberron at first, but it's quite nice. The Dragonshard articles are adding a lot of the much needed fluff to the setting that will give it adequate depth for the long haul.

Have you looked at the DnDO website? It actually looks quite cool. It won't look like your standard EQ game. It will only render a small area of the game world. The only permenant part of the game world will be the one city that everyone goes to. You go on "mission" type adventures (i.e. search for a specific relic or something) and the server generates that whole dungeon for just your party. You won't bump into other people when in there. The servers will be a lot smaller. It seems to be a very interesting game.

Some of the dungeons in EQ are "threaded," but most are still open.

Threaded dungeons are definitely the way to go, lest you hear Alex Denton's hilarious line from Deus Ex: Invisible War from one of the players:

For an impregnable fortress, this place sure sees a lot of foot traffic.

The Devs for this game seem to be learning from the mistakes of other MMOGS, so this one may actually be worth playing.

In the abstract I too would be happy. Hell, Minsc was hands down the most enjoyable character in the game. Even if his stats had sucked horribly I would have taken him along just for the dialogue. My major concern is that BG3 will become subordinate to BG 1&2. If you just run across him, he shoots off a few one-liners, and that is the only way in which your quest interacts with that of the Bhaalspawn it's great. What I am concerned about is that the storyline of BG3 will become nothing more than a footnote to the prior games. That would IMO cheapen what may be an even better game (it will certainly be higher tech, and despite a boatload of experience with 2e I like 3.x much more). I especially like the rumor that they will be using prestige classes. Say what you want about table-top gaming, but if it takes place in a videogame it isn't munchkinism, it's good strategy.

Heh. As opposed to the major storyline event to bring 1e FR into 2e FR?

I honestly don't know that what happened in MMORPG is going to determine the direction for a campaign world, story-wise. Though there have been main tabletop RPG events that allow the games to affect the outcome of the world (e.g., Living Greyhawk and Living Spyrcraft), which can be a good and bad thing (allows players to interact with the world and affect it).

I honestly don't care. Even though the FR world's current timeline have introduced firearms, MY FR does not have firearms. It will exist only when I (the DM) say it exist, not WotC.

Perhaps you are quite right! I didn't look into the Ebberron Campain Setting, so it could be that it is really very good so we shouldn't continue to talk bad about Ebberron - It's just that you have to introduce yourself to a new campain world, thats all I'm sad about. SO, perhaps its nice to learn more about Ebberon, and it's good that the D&D Online GAme will take part in Ebberon - We have just too many predudices against Ebberon.

The D&D online Site? Could somebody post the URL? i only found the NWN 2 Site of Obsidian....
