I was asked if searing light did more damage than normal to shades (Shadovar not undead shadows)

I know the spell states -max. 5d8 (as a ray) / -max 10d6 vs. undead / or 10d8 (if undead is particulary vulnerable to bright light)

please, I have the Lords of Darkness and the Archwizards Trilogy so I won't type all I know
(Shadovar are not undead)

How would you deal with this?

question 2:- Could a PC take Spell Thematics and have all his spells shed light as a torch (obviously instantaeous spells would just flash)
The example was trapping a shade prince in a force-cage cast by a mage with the Spell Thematics feat (see above)

thanks in advance!

Possibly to both. Makes some thematic sense to me.

I don't see any problems with any of that. I don't think that Searing Light would do extra damage against a Shade seeing as they are not undead!

Not sure if ST is supposed to work like that.

Even if you chose "flame" as your theme, and one of your themed spells is Magic Missile, your Magic Missiles won't do any additional fire damage: they'll merely have the appearance of bolts of flame.

I don't think you're supposed to get any additional, beneficial spell effects from your theme: you only get the +1 caster level.

Ultimately, your DM will have the final say-so as far as the light theme goes.

If it were me, I'd take the easy route & research a spell which combines & balances the effects of a Forcecage spell, while giving the forcecage some Continual Light properties, as the object of your spell is obviously not only to trap a Shade, but deny it it access to its special abilities while its caged.

I wouldn't find any objections in accepting a spell like that if I were DM'ing a campaign.

And I also concur with Desies: Searing Light won't do any additional damage to Shades as Shades are not undead creatures.
