| druid berrymore10-03-06, 01:14 PM | Hey Guys, I'm thinking of selling my Forgotten Realms game books. I have almost all of them. I'm not sure how much to sell them for on e-bay....i wanna do the buy-it-now thing. What do you think? Here's a pic of them: http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/1989/frbig02sw6.jpg |
| Ashen8510-03-06, 01:36 PM | Why are you doing this? That set is pretty through and you can't even get most of those anymore. There are somethings in there that would be pretty cool to have. Maybe I could buy some of that stuff from you?:D |
| druid berrymore10-03-06, 01:47 PM | The reason I am selling them is that I am going to buy a wacom cintiq (http://www.creativepro.com/story/review/23097.html). I love FR and I wish I didn't have to sell them. When I am rich one day, I'll buy em back. :) |
| createvmind10-03-06, 04:05 PM | sure could use that seven sisters. |
| Yaeri10-03-06, 04:56 PM | I'm going to do you a big favour and take all of that junk out of your hands for a big shiny dollar. :D Do you want to sell all of it in one go? PS: *Drool* |
| druid berrymore10-03-06, 05:39 PM | Yeah. I definitely wanna sell them all at the same time. The last thing I want to deal with is a hundred ebay orders. |
| BrianCritchley10-03-06, 06:56 PM | step back for a minute and think if you REALLY want to do this, I've heard plenty of stories of gamers who due to space limits at their apaertment sold all their stuff and then regreatted it a few years down the road. if space is your only problem ask a friend or your parents if you can store some of your stuff there. |
| Krash10-03-06, 10:01 PM | When I saw your picture, I had to take a quick glance at my bookshelf to make sure all my stuff was still there!:) Seriously, that's a great achievement and not one to be selling lightly. If you loved the Realms enough to amass that collection, then you probably love it enough to keep it and find some other way to fund your purchase. Best of luck with it. -- George Krashos |
| Old Sage10-04-06, 02:44 AM | Indeed. I have to agree with Krash. There's more than a few FR books here that are difficult to find printed copies of at the best of times. I would suggest you really, really think about this, before you make a final decision. Even if you have no intention of gaming in the Realms again, most of these sources double as great reading material in their own right. Certainly a worthy point to consider before deciding completely. |
| Dark Wizard10-04-06, 03:18 AM | I understand your desire for a Wacom Cintiq. I'm not an artist and even I want one. If you're really are set on selling your collection you could glance through eBay. Figure out a rough average price for related types of accessories (by breaking the collection down into categories, ex: Volo's Guides, 3e stuff, box sets, regional or religion supplements) then tabulate a total. It should easily be a several hundred dollars, if not somewhere around the thousand range. Or you could take the list/retail price for each item and mark down according to condition and rarity, accounting for inflation. Or find a similiarly extensive collection put up for auction on eBay, follow it to the conclusion, should give you and idea of what your collection should be worth. If I had money, I would make a decent offer, but alas such is a dream for those wealthier than I. :( |
| The ShapeLess One10-04-06, 03:35 AM | I don't think you should sell a collection as grand as that one. One you might regret it as BrianCritchley said. Best of luck to you. |
| Delzounblood10-04-06, 07:20 AM | DO NOT SELL, DO NOT SELL I mean it do not sell your FR stuff, I know from experience it is the wrong thing todo!!! I sold ALL my DND / FR material (I had an even bigger collection than you!) It was the worst thing I ever did, I needed cash at the time and thought I'll never play the game again and sold the lot for a fraction of what it was worth. Now some 6/7 years latter I am slowly starting to buy books that I once owned and of course all the new source books coming out, I have a wish list of which books I would like but I don't have the money to splash out and buy them all at once so it's One book at a time! PLEASE learn from my mistake YOU WILL REGRET THIS IF YOU SELL |
| Red_Wizard10-04-06, 10:58 AM | As much as i hate to lose a chance at all those books, i agree with the others. I don't think there is anything out there that i would need bad enough to sell that collection. Also, if you do sell them, don't expect to get them back for as much as you sell them for. As a rouch lump sum, i'd say you could get a minimum of $2000 Cdn for them. But i assure you, you'd never see this stick sld again, and you'd probably not find all the older books again, trust me i've looked :P. The average second edition ADnD book/Bokset goes from anywhere between $30-$100+ dollars US. Not a cheep thing to try and by back individually. So my advice, start dancing on poles, before you consider selling that collection ;). |
| DarkLiChNeaZur10-04-06, 12:59 PM | you make my 13 year old nerdyness with glasses and 3 bookshelves in my room seem like im a jock (hate labelling just doing it cuz it would be funny right there lol!) good luck, and alot of those things sell for TONS of money, i would wait a while, or take a loan for you pen thing, hey what is that thing anyway? |
| druid berrymore10-04-06, 01:39 PM | Thanks for the idea Dark Wizard. I might do that....break them up into groups of similar titles. If I sell them all at once I am only going to get people bidding who have huge pockets....probably not too many i'd assume. The group way makes sense to get more potential buyers. I totally understand what you guys are saying about regretting it. If I go through with it, I will regret it....but I'm not sure what I will regret more, a three thousand dollar credit card debt or selling my FR books. I appreciate the comments and advice. I'll make the decision next week. :) |
| BrianCritchley10-04-06, 04:47 PM | I should note that a 3000 dollar credit debt is proably easier to recover from then loosing a lot of well priceless books. you can always make more money, aquireing some of the old d&d stuff may prove impossiable |
| DnDBreeder10-04-06, 04:50 PM | Hey Druid, I have recently started doing alot of buying on E-bay. I have started to build up my collection of D&D/Forgotten Realms products. Anyways, no need to go on about me, I just wanted to let you know. I have seen lots of collections on E-bay, that is by far the biggest/best I have seen. If you put the lot up to bid, instead of putting a "buy it now" option, you will get your moneys worth. If you use the "buy it now" option, more than likely, you're not gonna get the money your deserve for getting rid of that stack of pure D&D love you got there. If only I had the money to take it off your hands. I need everyone of those books/box sets minus a couple that I already have. Now, I'm no E-bay-D&D expert, but my honest guess is, if you put that complete lot up for bid, not "Buy it now", you'll get close 4 to 5 hundred, easily. If you sold everything one piece at a time, you may get more, alot more. If you did the "buy it now" option, more than likely, you'll have trouble selling the full lot for what you want. You may, you may not, to be honest, I am telling what I think could happen. That is something you will have to find out on your own. I'm getting off work here shortly, I'll post a couple "things to know" about selling D&D products on E-bay that I have seen people do that cost them some money because they posted them wrong, later. |
| Ioulaum10-04-06, 04:52 PM | That $3000 credit card debit depending on intrest rate could cost another $1000 after a few years. But like the other posters said Think about it really hard before these items. Sell if you can sell something else like a kidney or something.:P |
| nwelte10-04-06, 09:21 PM | I say hood the collection. Tech. always fades and loses value, personal treasures always gain worth especially when they are no longer in your possession. Bottom line the "pen thingy" will drop in price eventually. Wait it out. |
| druid berrymore10-04-06, 09:48 PM | Bottom line the "pen thingy" will drop in price eventually. Yes, but the painting skill I develop using the cintiq will be priceless. |
| Bladesong10-04-06, 11:58 PM | Don't do it. The regret will eat you alive like a flesh-eating bacteria. |
| Zanan10-05-06, 08:49 AM | Don't do it. If you have to, double check what you could get from ebay for gold-dust stuff like The Drow of the Underdark or the Old Grey Box books. In any case, the download options (RPGnow, Paizo) may cause the price you get being lower than what the books are actually worth to a true FRer. |
| Halidan10-05-06, 09:30 AM | Druid, I'm going to join the bandwagon of folks telling you to hold onto your collection. However, I'm going to come at it from a different direction. You should hold onto the collection simply because selling it on e-Bay won't get you anywhere near enough money to buy the cintiq. It's an unfortunate truth - but prices for most of the stuff you have in the collection are currently really poor on e-Bay. I'm not sure if it's the easy availability of pdf's of most of these items or the transition to 3E/3.5E and the resulting dump of 2E and earlier product on the market (or some combination), but prices for most of thes eitems just aren't what you think they are. Some examples from the past 30 days on e-Bay. Code of the Harpers (in excellent condition, which yours is not) goes for no more than $10 US. Drow of the Underdark (again in excellent condition) tops out at $7.50 US - and that's when it sells, which is only about 50% of the time. Things are worse for large lots. Only stores, and e-Bay re-sellers will typically bid on large lots. They won't give you top dollar - simply because they're going to have to make a profit on selling the items as singles. I'm a long time e-Bay seller with over +1200 feedback - almost all of which is from RPGs and RPG related material. You've got a nice collection there, but it's not a good market right now for what you've got to sell. If you don't believe me, do some price checking on e-Bay yourself. You'll find out what I'm saying is true. Hope this helps. |
| mearrin6910-05-06, 12:12 PM | Can't argue with you about the Cintiq - I want one myself. But I've got to agree with most of the posters above. You will regret selling that shelf full of gaming goodness, and you won't get nearly enough out of it. There's got to be another way to get the cash you need. Do you have a regular Wacom tablet? If not, get one of the cheap ones and save your CP and SP up while practicing on that one. Just hate to see you lose all of that stuff. I got rid of a ton of my old wargames and RPG stuff when I got married and moved into a tiny apartment (16 years ago) and I still regret it. Managed to rebuy some of it on e-bay but I'll never get back some of that stuff. M |
| druid berrymore10-05-06, 01:28 PM | Mearinn69, yeah i have a 12x12 tablet right now....but it's just not good enough....hahahah. Seriously, nothing beats the feel of actually drawing on the surface. Halidan, thanks for responding. I didn't realise the market was so bad for this kind of stuff. Yeah, I agree....the last thing I want is to get something like 300 for it all. I'm gonna think about it....I might just try to find another way to get the money. Thanks everyone for your comments. |

| Chod10-10-06, 01:13 PM | And let us know when you have made your decission. |
| druid berrymore10-10-06, 08:42 PM | I'm still on the fence.....but I am leaning toward doing it. I might sell my 3e books first and see how the auction goes. If I instantly regret it I can always easily buy 3e back anytime. |
| jmsblntn10-15-06, 09:15 AM | Lord and Lady! That horde is worthy to be in a dragons lair! Ancalagon the Black would'nt turn his nose up on that lot. Do Not Sell them! You will regret it if you do! I have been into D&D since 1977 and I made a horrific mistake in lending my First Edition to my friend and Dms/apprentice and never got all of them back; because he foolishly loaned them to fly by night players ! If you are only taking a hiatus from D&D just box them up; as others have already said you will have a hard time finding replacements! |
| Link18210-15-06, 11:24 PM | Is that stuff really worth all that much? I havn't been looking at prices for old stuff on Ebay, as I've tons of it left over since the early 1E days (I even have that white box before there was an AD&D). I've seen old modules and whatnot list for very little money. I doubt that stuff would get anywhere near 3000$. I've got that Deities and Demigods with the Cthulhu and Melnibone gods in it and that is worth next to nothing, not the piles of gold everyone thinks it is. In a few short years you won't be able to give that drawing pad thing away and I suspect you'd have a harder time getting those books back. If they mean that much to you keep them. Start saving as best you can for that drawing thing. If your an artist, there are other mediums you can use to sharpen your skills I'm sure. That pic has inspired me to dig through my ancient tomes and catalog what I've got though. |
| ArnimThayer10-16-06, 11:10 AM | I would be lying if I said I couldn't benefit if you tried to sell your collection on ebay. I would be one of the first to place a bid in order to complete my own collection. That said, you should seriously reconsider. About five years ago, I sold a sizable amount of my comic collection, thinking how much space it would save and that I had no further use for it. Now I regret it, since I have two little children (ages 3 and 4) who love Spiderman, and the X-Men. I now have nothing to leave or show them to help them appreciate the original sources. they are left with second rate watered down movies and cartoons. I have held on to my FR collection though. I look forward to teaching my children an appreciation of shared world fiction and roleplaying. Already, my four year old sits at our game table weekly asking "what's that?" I cannot imagine not keeping my books, even from previous editions. If you do decide to sell though, I am interested. |
| gadget0111-11-06, 04:11 PM | What you have there is what I've been searching for. Although I would only be interested in the set of core rulebooks (Hardbacks). What are you asking on them? For a good enough price, I'll take the supplements as well. Although I'm not really interested in those. My E-mail is brn_ft@cox.net |
| gadget0111-11-06, 04:14 PM | sorry, i thought that the black books at the bottom of the first pile were 2e core rulebooks. nevermind my previous reply. |
