| MarkusTay6312-29-07, 12:26 PM | I've been thinking about 4e and the Spellplague (who hasn't?), and I don't think I really hate the Spellplague at all - just the dis-curteous way we were introduced to it (and complete lack of details). So I'm thinking now I 'may' like it, or at least parts of it. I was going to develop a home-brew from scratch, but first I would like to see what WotC comes up with. Now, as for the purpose of this thread - If I don't fall in love with the new setting (which is highly probable), then I may just use the Spellplague to 're-make' the world in my OWN image. Heck, if the designers can do it, why can't we? :D I've already modified the maps in my game, and some small bits of history (to explain the map changes), but now I'm thinking going full-bore and creating a world based on the Realms, but definately NOT the Realms. So, I'm open to ideas. What parts of the setting should stay, and what should go? Please give (logical) reasons for why you feel the way you do - I don't want this thread to turn into another mud-slinging contest. ALL ideas will be taken into consideration, including things from OTHER settings/novels. Right now, I have only two caveats - I want the world to look more like the maps from Moorcock's Young Kingdoms, with a body of water central and various lands spread around. That is one of the things I admire about Eberron - it has a greater ability to run a 'nautical campaign', because most of the rest of the world is detailed. I could do this with Maztica and Katashaka - and may yet - but perhaps starting over from scratch with the maps might be the best way to go. I also want there to be an old declining Empire, either as an island nation, or established on one of the 3-4 continents. I picture the sea looking pretty busy with islands, like the Inner Sea or the world of Earthsea. I also need a reason why the old Empire declined/collapsed, and right now I'm toying with an outside enemy that was nearly powerful enough to destroy it completely. Why am I asking for ideas here in the FR forums? Because the world will have many of the races/cultures/nations from FR - just transplanted to my brave new world. Who knows? I may even say it is a future version of FR, just as the new setting is. I already picture the 'Dark Empire' being Mulhorand or something VERY similar, like Ed's original Stygian version. Not even sure if I want it to be human - it could be a 'dark Elven' culture, simialr to the Melnibonean's of the Elric novels. Basically, I just want to know what you people think are cool ideas for a setting, and what aren't. For instance, I like the Ogier from the WoT novels, but I'm not sure how I'd use them in an FR knock-off. Thats the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Maybe we can come up with a 'dream setting' of our own. Since FR will no longer be "all-things to all people", we can at least discuss those parts of the setting we thought were well-worth keeping (yes... I know most of us feel EVERYTHING was worth keeping, but I'm sure all of us has at least one thing we didn't like about FR if we really think about it). One last thing... should it have a "theme"? That seems to be the direction the designers are taking FR, and I'm not sure if it should or shouldn't. If I do a theme, I'm thinking it will be a brave new world of fledgling kingdoms emerging from an era of Darkness. Does that sound too cliche'? What are everyone's thoughts on this? |
| Lord Karsus12-30-07, 09:59 AM | -Well, you know that Evermeet has to stay, by virtue of all of the work we've done. |
| MarkusTay6312-30-07, 10:56 AM | Yes, but I was thinking of moving the Elven Homeland onto one of the continents, rather then one of the islands. It could either be a part of the main continent (Faerūn?), or somewhere to "the west" (like Evermeet, or Valinor), placing it in or off the shore of Anchorome. Not even sure how much I want the maps to still resemble the current FR - I will probably just make a list of things I want to see in a settting, and then see what WotC does first before I start making my own. I'm also toying with just pasting together five seperate settings (FR, GH, Mystara, Nyambe, and Iron Kingdoms), creating something similar to the spinning globe on Brian's website... http://www.geonomicon.com/portal/images/tabloid-FRGHplanet.gif |

The Elves, forseeing all of the crap that would be coming, such as Mystra's death, and the Spellplague, literally shunted the island into her own demiplane, much like the Sildeyuir. -I think that makes the trip to Evermeet ("Passing West") much more...'eldrich'. -What's the spinning globe? It's going too fast for me. It's a combination of Greyhawk and Faerūn? -And, in truth, don't even use the Realms themselves, if you don't want, but use elements that you like. I know in my setting, that's what I did. I use the same subraces, and deities. I explain it all through Spelljamming, Planeshifting, and the particular creation myth of the Overdeity and the Crystal Sphere itself. Very long and complicated story short, it was a dead, lifeless Crystal Sphere until it bumped into the Realmspace Crystal Sphere. That 'jolt' caused the Overdeity of the Crystal Sphere to 'wake up'. Thinking that all Crystal Spheres needed to be like Realmspace, it created Shar, Lathander, Moander, etc. That's how I justify using all of those deities. |
| Jedi_Master_Trobon12-30-07, 11:48 AM | I'm also toying with just pasting together five seperate settings (FR, GH, Mystara, Nyambe, and Iron Kingdoms), creating something similar to the spinning globe on Brian's website... http://www.geonomicon.com/portal/images/tabloid-FRGHplanet.gif You know of the sacred word of Privateer Press? I love Iron Kingdoms sooooo much. Beside Forgotten Realms its my favorite campaign setting. My choice for a thrown together world would be Forgotten Realms, Iron Kingdoms, Greyhawk, Xendrik from Eberron (I really liked that continent), And all of this connected to the demiplane of dread. |
| MarkusTay6312-30-07, 10:06 PM | Iron Kingdoms Rock! I have a Cryx army. :dancin: I was going to paste the IK world map onto the 'unknown' eastern half of the Greyhawk continent, and then flip Mystara's main continent upside-down and put it in the center at the bottom (of that globe) between GH and FR. Then the Amedio Jungle (GH) becomes Maztica, and I could place Katashaka (Nyambe) below that. However, I like YOUR idea about Xendrik - Maybe I'll drop that dead-center in the middle of the big three and have IT be the home of the ancient fallen empie! I think I may need to go with three seperate powerful empires, and dozens of smaller Kingdoms. Xendrik could be primordial one from a lost era, and then perhaps some other 'inhuman' one more recent. I was thinking some sort of combination of the WoT Seachan and the Drow-like Melnibneans from the Elric novels. I may even use the name Orgoth from the IK setting for my ficticious Empire, since it was never detailed to any extent. This empire would have fallen about a century ago, but it is not completely 'dead' yet. From it's ashes would have arisen the new Kingdoms (once again, borrowing from Moorcock's Young Kingdoms), among which one would have taken the forfront, embracing magic and technology in it's quest to become the new super-power. This new Empire would be very similar to the one in the Warhammer game. I figure that would mesh well with IK's 'Steam-Punk' like setting. I want at least one region at a Renaissance-level of tech, perhaps with a Gothic Horror vibe thrown in. Not sure; I might be mixing too many concepts together here, but I like a complicated world. :D -For a really interesting idea (I think), make Evermeet a demiplane of her own. I'll think on that. There'd have to be some sort of 'High-Magic' effect on the ocean or something that allows Elves to simply "sail off the world" and into Evermeet/Arvandor. Perhaps just their weary souls crying out for release? Sounds pretty 'epic'... I like it. :D -What's the spinning globe? It's going too fast for me. It's a combination of Greyhawk and Faerūn?Yup, GH and FR. To me, that globe is like looking upon heaven. :cloud9: -And, in truth, don't even use the Realms themselves, if you don't want, but use elements that you like. I didn't come up with a back-story like you did though; I just assumed it was an 'alternate Parallel Prime'. ;) |
| Lord Karsus12-30-07, 11:04 PM | Interesting... I'll think on that. Perhaps just their weary souls crying out for release? Sounds pretty 'epic'... I like it. :D -Exactly. I'd stress the 'forlorn' and 'homesick' aspect of the Elven Retreat, and that Elves simply will their spirits to leave their bodies, to head for Evermeet/Arvandor. I'd also have some pretty cool Baelnorn and/or Selu'Taar, you know, guarding the area, or whatever. I didn't come up with a back-story like you did though; I just assumed it was an 'alternate Parallel Prime'. ;) -That works, too. |
| Karsus the Mad12-30-07, 11:07 PM | Elves in my world (not the Realms) are innate druids to represent their sheer intimacy with nature. I decided not to use DnD rules, but if I did they'd automatically gain druidic power/spells as they advance HD, regardless of what class they actually progress in. |
| MarkusTay6312-30-07, 11:51 PM | I like that a lot, KtM - it fits very well with what I see as Ed's original vision for the Elves. I just finished Elminster: The making of a Mage from the Annotated Elminster book, and the Elves in the story are inherintly magical, but not in a flashy, combat sort of way. Even the fighters (archers) cast spells, so it would seem Ed pictured all of HIS Elves being at least multi-classed. The new rules appear to allow races to gain abilities as they level, not just classes, so perhaps we will see something akin to this in the new 4e rules (which I do plan on using). |

It's the same thing that the elves in Lord of the Rings do. :P Iron Kingdoms Rock! | Spirithawkfellow01-01-08, 03:51 AM | Hey Markus you might want to try this site, it awesome for campaign building, plus there are plenty other campaign builder there that are from or used to be from these forums, here is the link below. This might be able to help... http://www.thecbg.org |
| MarkusTay6301-01-08, 02:54 PM | I'll check it out... I might be looking for a new 'home' soon. :( Of course, we're still eight months away from anything that might drive me away forever. Then again, I may get 'invited' to leave WAY before then. :P |
| Lord Karsus01-01-08, 03:01 PM | I'll check it out... I might be looking for a new 'home' soon. :( Of course, we're still eight months away from anything that might drive me away forever. Then again, I may get 'invited' to leave WAY before then. :P -Hell, I have no intention of even picking up a 4e FR book, and I'm not leaving. There always needs to be grumpy 'grognards', waxing poetic about the 'glory days'. -Think, MT, that's what they want you to do. Cause all of the dissenters to leave, thus creating a paradise for 4e Realms, where they are so much cooler and sicker than the crap that was 1e, 2e and 3e Realms...Seriously, who published that garbage, anyway...? |
| MarkusTay6301-01-08, 05:14 PM | You mean... We're like Jedi? It's up to US to start a Rebellion and defeat the evil Empire? http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/MarkusTay/WotC_emporer.gif |
| Stigger01-01-08, 07:37 PM | Not sure I'd go quite that far... |
| MarkusTay6301-01-08, 08:10 PM | But just look at what WotC plans to do to the Younglings... |
| Lord Karsus01-01-08, 08:30 PM | You mean... We're like Jedi? It's up to US to start a Rebellion and defeat the evil Empire? -While the Jedi didn't start the Rebellion, close enough. -Meh, I don't particularly like Jedi (Sith, FTW, for many reasons), I can deal with that. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/MarkusTay/WotC_emporer.gif ! |
| Jedi_Master_Trobon01-02-08, 01:26 AM | Don't make me hide out on a desert planet and train the next breed of Realms players. Now you all know why I need my screen name. BTW I still play 2E whenever I can and I'm still here. |
| Stigger01-02-08, 01:42 AM | Jedi and Sith are both kinda crap actually... Hollow Ones FTW. :P :D |
| Karsus the Mad01-02-08, 02:53 AM | http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/MarkusTay/WotC_emporer.gif That's worthy of a place in my sig. If it'd let me..... |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 08:24 AM | But just look at what WotC plans to do to the Younglings... Hey, I'm only 15, don't even consiter associating me with those Eberron-obsessed nincompoops:mad: Personally I would have liked to experience the 2e Realms for myself, it would be really cool (and an impossible dream) if WoTC recreated that time period in 4e. |
| Lord Karsus01-02-08, 08:27 AM | Jedi and Sith are both kinda crap actually... Hollow Ones FTW. :P :D -Well, not exactly. True Sith philosophy, FTW. Not the crap that people like Palpatine, Vader and such corrupted it into. Hey, I'm only 15, don't even consiter associating me with those Eberron-obsessed nincompoops:mad: -Hey, play nice. There are plenty of decent Eberron people. They just like different stuff than we do, that's all. |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 08:32 AM | - -Hey, play nice. There are plenty of decent Eberron people. They just like different stuff than we do, that's all. Oh no, I have nothing against Eberron players in general, its just that their entire setting seems to be corrupting the game in general. I don't want D&D to become a pulpaction fest. |

| Stigger01-02-08, 08:35 AM | Different strokes for different folks seems to be a phrase WotC has forgotten for 4e. I blame Gary Coleman... |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 08:58 AM | -Nor do I. That's not the players or even the setting's fault, though. That's the fault of WotC. Amen to that brotha' Really, all I want to see is that what is made in Eberron STAYS in Eberron and FR be left alone, is that too much to ask for? |
| Lord Karsus01-02-08, 09:03 AM | Amen to that brotha' Really, all I want to see is that what is made in Eberron STAYS in Eberron and FR be left alone, is that too much to ask for? -I agree. Certain toys in a sandbox are cool, and certain toys in a pool are cool, but what are you really going to do with a shovel in a pool, and a blow-up alligator in a sandbox? |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 09:08 AM | -I agree. Certain toys in a sandbox are cool, and certain toys in a pool are cool, but what are you really going to do with a shovel in a pool, and a blow-up alligator in a sandbox? Hmm, I would probably lose the shovel and pop the alligator, then fill it with sand:D Hopefully something similar will happen with all the Eberron BS in the Realms right now. |
| Jedi_Master_Trobon01-02-08, 10:34 AM | My sig now has Keith's take on this whole Eberron in FR thing. |
| Lord Karsus01-02-08, 10:36 AM | My sig now has Keith's take on this whole Eberron in FR thing. -Man, why can't we have Keith? |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 10:40 AM | He is a very intelligent and insightful man, but I really am not so sure he has enough control over his setting right now. |
| Lord Karsus01-02-08, 10:41 AM | He is a very intelligent and insightful man, but I really am not so sure he has enough control over his setting right now. -Well, the beauty and the curse of Eberron is that there is nothing to have control of. What was published in the ECS is all there really is. That's how I understand it, anyway. All of the other books just detail and flesh out what already exists. |
| Jedi_Master_Trobon01-02-08, 11:33 AM | -Well, the beauty and the curse of Eberron is that there is nothing to have control of. What was published in the ECS is all there really is. That's how I understand it, anyway. All of the other books just detail and flesh out what already exists. Also since the novels aren't canon there's basically no movement forward. Therefor it is the same when you start one game as when you start another. This, as with most Eberron things, is both good and bad. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 12:44 PM | Please, no Eberron or designer bashing in THIS thread - lord knows there are enough of those. In fact, I started this thread just so that I would have something to occupy my mind and look forward to, rather then sit and stew over the stuff being bandied about in other threads. That deep, ancient, crusty feel that Ed managed to capture with the Realms is something I'm going for, and I would just like to hear what everybody else likes. Not just in FR mind you, but stuff from other worlds, settings, novels, etc... anything goes. Right now, I just want my imagination to run wild, and then I'll slow have the entirer thing coalesce into a cohesive whole. If I think it's any good, I might start my own campaign world up on my private page, if they ever get that (promised) part of the DI up and running. I'll try to have a mock-up of what I'm considering for a world map by the end of the day, and posts links to it here and on the worldbuilder forums, just to get feedback. My big problem now is that I like way too many things, I know that all of them can't be used in the same setting. |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 12:46 PM | Have you ever looked into the Elder Scrolls series of video games? They somewhat capture that feeling. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 12:50 PM | I tried playing one on my computer years ago, and my machine kept locking up. Since then, I never gave them another chance. |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 12:52 PM | I tried playing one on my computer years ago, and my machine kept locking up. Since then, I never gave them another chance. Get a 360 and buy Oblivion Game of the year edition. I have it but haven't started playing yet, I hear it is mad fun however. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 12:56 PM | My son is saving up for a 360 now; he should have it right after his Birthday in Feb. Now I know what game to buy HIM for his Birthday. :D Aren't I a stinker? :P |

The worlds are so detailed it is frightning. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 01:03 PM | My sons (16 and 19) and I all play WoW (or at least used to), and we all had our own accounts. It was great fun teaming up and doing quests together... and so much easier then taking them camping. :P |

It happened with Diablo 2. I will only play shooters like CS Source and Halo 3 online. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 01:49 PM | Diablo 2 FtW! :dancin: Although there were many aspects of Diablo 1 that were better, like the randomly generated maps. Still, I'd have to say it was the Diablo line that got me back into gaming after a few years hiatus. |

Still, I'd have to say it was the Diablo line that got me back into gaming after a few years hiatus. I had no such problems with Guild Wars however, which proved not only boring, but unaddicting as well. Dude, all Blizzard games are as addicting as crack, even the strategy ones! |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 01:58 PM | Couldn't agree more, but I seem to have derailed my own thread. |
| GothicDan01-02-08, 02:00 PM | Video games. Boo. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 02:09 PM | Don't knock VG's, Dan. Like I said, Diablo got me back into D&D, and the FR series of games have generated a lot of new players amongst the PnP crowd. Besides, how can your astute scientific mind NOT appreciate all the physics involved in creating a fully interactive 3D environment? |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 02:26 PM | NWN was what got me into FR in the first place (well, that and Drizzt), too bad my computer is piece of crap that can't play NWN 2. |
| Jedi_Master_Trobon01-02-08, 03:09 PM | It was Baldur's Gate for me. That game was the start of this FR addiction of mine. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 04:17 PM | I just changed the name of the thread, so none of this would be off-topic. Anyway, anything any of you VG players find in a game you wouldn't mind seeing making it into FR (or my own version, at least)? |

Even though the game was a bit stale, it would be interesting to see the whole Guilds/Factions being the major power on the continent from Guild Wars in Faerun. Have various groups seize control of major nations in the aftermath of the spellplague and essentially run their own show. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 05:08 PM | Sounds like Sembia, or even parts of Waterdeep. I believe the old Mystara supplement The Minrothad Guilds covered that as well... I'll definately have a place for a heavily mercantile nation, perhaps even with colonial goals a'la Amn. |
| GothicDan01-02-08, 05:31 PM | Besides, how can your astute scientific mind NOT appreciate all the physics involved in creating a fully interactive 3D environment? Baby physics. I've spent a year simulating cosmic muon showers and muon-electron decay in a somewhat interactive 3D environment! |

I'll definately have a place for a heavily mercantile nation, perhaps even with colonial goals a'la Amn. Nah, Sembia does have a ruling council, the merchant princes. What I'm talking about is a nation governed by various interest groups all trying to usurp each other (not even necessesarily refering to mercantile interests). Like, a multipartisan oligarchy. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 06:38 PM | Nah, Sembia does have a ruling council, the merchant princes. What I'm talking about is a nation governed by various interest groups all trying to usurp each other...The United States? |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 06:42 PM | The United States? .... I was actually thinking about using that as an example of what I mean in my post but thought it would be too ludicrous, but yes. And extremely messed up, totally not-for-the-people, version of the U.S with the Factions being far more apparent in everyday life. A better example would be a pre-Renaissance era Italian city-state such as Florence (with the Ghiebellines, Black Guelfs, White Guelfs, etc) |
| Stigger01-02-08, 06:42 PM | Works for pretty much any semi-democratic nation really... Thesk might qualify for that multipartisan oligarchy definition if I remember its description correctly. |
| MarkusTay6301-02-08, 06:51 PM | Geez, so would Chessenta. Even Calimshan's cities plot against each other... Mmmmm... Calimshan, with it's unique 'Morrocan' flavor... I like the idea of a middle-eastern flavored mercantile power with lots of plotting Pashas and Sheiks... :plotting: |
| XHereticX01-02-08, 07:55 PM | Geez, so would Chessenta. Even Calimshan's cities plot against each other... Mmmmm... Calimshan, with it's unique 'Morrocan' flavor... I like the idea of a middle-eastern flavored mercantile power with lots of plotting Pashas and Sheiks... :plotting: Chessenta=too warlike, plus I am not looking for warring city states in a confederation as much as a single unified state with absolute power divided between several powerful Guilds (kind of like Ravnica from Magic the Gathering) Sort of like Calimshan, except more Western in feel and with the organizations acting more in the open. |
| Lord Karsus01-03-08, 12:49 AM | I just changed the name of the thread, so none of this would be off-topic. -What a crafty guy. |
