Shadowdale Module: dungeon hack or RP? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was wondering if it was worth buying the Shadowdale Module. Cormyr was good, but in the end only a series of fighting encounters but given the plot that was ok, no use bargaining with Sharrans. But for Shadowdale I could see a great potential for a spy adventure: infiltration, stealth and diplomacy. But from the Excerpts on the hompage it looks again like: go to dungeon A, kill all monsters, ergo solve the problem, then go to dungeon B, kill all different monsters: problem solved. Anyone who already read it?

I found it very similar in spirit to Red Hand of Doom, Great Stuff!

PC's vs army, that's the easiet way to explain it.

its not a bad adventure, but it has minimal sourcebook material

Yes, but does this mean, PC go there and kill one soldier after the other in one room after the other, or do they have to infiltrate, disguise as soldiers to move in the streets of shadowdale and contact probable allies for the uprising and maybe kill key enemies, without arousing the whole army against them?

It's not exactly either scenario, but it's definitely more the latter than the former.

*shudders in presence of the grand-master* ;-)
Thanks Eric, that's what I wanted to know and I now I can buy this adventure :-)

I have mine now and I'm enjoying reading it. Some things I like a lot, some I don't. There's a lot of non-combat potential, but I wish there was more about dealing with the people of the dale, and the 3E stats and encounter spreads take up a lot of space.

Hey, it would be great if Wizards.com put up a high-resolution copy of the Shadowdale map on p. 145 so we can print it out big and use it as a play aid...

The only flaw in the module that I can see is angry reactions from high level PC's or NPCs who already exist in the world. If you have semi-active 22-25 level characters who might want to visit the Zhentlers, (That's Zhent + Hitler, for the uninitiated), then you don't run this adventure. You just describe the screaming as the Zhents die.
