WageSage 11-15-04, 05:00 AM	hey, I just bought The Shining South Book and it is missing 17 pages! It is missing several of the prestige classes and most of the spells! I went to return it to the store and swap it for a good copy, but all the store copies were missing those pages. Since the store wont give me my money back, where on the WOTC page do I apply for a refund (or a new complete book)?

(you can see this by counting the white glue between the paper on the top of the book) If you remove 17 pages from a 196 page book, you get 179, and that makes the book come out with 89.5 paper pages. (2 pages on each paper = 179 pages, but you can't have half a page of paper) The fact that your missing several parts, like PrC and Spells, it appears that you are missing the 3 or 4 part. This would be 14 pages missing.. Something is amiss, your booksstore should send it's shipment back to WotC and get a fresh batch.

(2 pages on each paper = 179 pages, but you can't have half a page of paper). Er, actually, that would be 12 sections of 16 pages each, also known as a signature. When a book is created, the pages are actually printed in groups on very large sheets of paper (about the size of a poster map) that is then folded in half three times. Since a piece of paper has two sides, the first fold doubles that to four "pages," the second fold doubles it to eight, and the third fold doubles it one more time to 16. Once the signatures are printed and folded, they are stacked together to make the book, and then the folds are trimmed off (in Shining South's case, 12 of them went together to make a 192-page book). Cunning Linguist, you may be considering the end papers (the heavier blue paper at the very front and back of the book) as four additional pages to come up with 196, but they are separate from the actual printed pages. Occasionally, a signature will get "dropped," and another one will be duplicated. If you've ever had to put together a stapled packet of information, you will understand how this might happen. In assembling the packet, you probably had big stacks of the same page set up on a table, with each stack in the correct order from one end of the table to the other. You moved down the line, grabbing the top copy from each stack, in order, and then stapling it at the end of the line. But if someone in charge of replenishing the stacks accidentally added a page to the wrong pile, the result would be some packets missing one page and containing another one twice. It's the same at the printer. A bundle of signatures most likely got taken off the printing press and accidentally stacked in the wrong pile for assembly. A group of books all got one signature twice and are missing another one. In this case, since several of the PrCs and most of the spells are missing, it's the third signature, or pages 33-48. Another signature (probably 17-32 or 49-64) is in there twice (otherwise, the book would be the wrong thickness and the cover wouldn't fit on it properly). Since the books are packed in boxes at the end of the printing process, a whole box might contain incorrectly bound books. In this particular case, the bookstore where WageSage shopped got a full box of those incorrect books, and they can (and should) return them to Wizards for correct ones. This happens regularly, and bookstores have traditionally been able to have the screwed up copies replaced at no charge. If this bookstore won't help you, contact Wizards' customer service people and tell them, but be prepared to include the name and address of the bookstore, so they can get the problem straightened out from their end. hippyjamez 11-21-04, 10:23 AM	my FRCS book had 24 or so pages missing out of it...starting at page 174, they had to re-order it, as it was the last one off the shelf, and the new one was just fine.....
warlockco 11-21-04, 04:31 PM	Printing/Publishing Errors Happen. It is usually more obvious with a Sourcebook/Rulebook because alot of people tend to skim them first then start to read them. As opposed to a novel, I have had a few novels where pages towards the end or middle were missing; never had any problems with getting an exhange on those. And if a retailer is giving you a line, then the publisher is usually more than willing to help. Even Software Companies can be quite helpful at times. I had a complete copy of game sent to me after I called their Customer Service Department to let them know that my copy of the game was missing the CDs and the store I bought it from wasn't being helpful. Course that was over 7 years ago, and things most likely have changed alot on that front with all the piratcy going on.
