Should Selune be a greater goddess? [Archive] - Wizards Community

What's your take on this deity's sad state of decline? For me, I always bump her up to a GG and with Mystra's death, I definitely think she should pick up the excess worshippers and become a Greater Goddess again.

absolutely. she has not been in decline though. Selune has gone from a servant of Sune to bigger things and the editions have come and gone

Well Selune was a lesser then she should have been because alot of her engeries went to for Mystra...so who know what will happen.

Logicaly it should be that she should gain back Mystra's old divine energies that was hers in the first place...but since they are going for a "Darker" Realms I got a feeling they will leave Selune at her current status because actualy haveing good gods to counter the evil gods seem to somehow steal PCs spotlight.

I doubt FR is becoming Mordor, John.

Didn't say that...say they are going for a 'darker' campaign setting...I mean come on...

The spellplague

The whole Tymora/Tyr/Helm thing(seem to me they divided the good guys up by alot)

Dwarves and Orcs living together(a play onncats and dogs living together)

We are on step away from a large commerical icon from attacking the Realms....:D ;)

But seriously the Realms are darker...or they might be going for 'edgier'

Selune is like the moon in that she waxes and wanes in power through the ages. Currently I would say she is on the rise.

I doubt any divine power would return to Selune from Mystra(unless similar power returned to Shar making her much more seriously godlike).
Also with Mystra's death likely largely being Shar's plan, she will probably control what fallout there is... Plus, Mystra doesn't exactly have many worshippers(what with, only some wizards worshipping her, and likely nobody else).

Also, with Mystra's death, I think Shar's plan should also include Selune being extinguished. That would make the event more satisfying(from the Dark Side PoV ... Vengeance at Last!!! :) )

---

I wonder what the situation is with Azuth and Velsharoon. If they are subdued by Shar(don't know what happens to them beyond some rumors that they're vanishing)... perhaps they will return as Shar's servants <cough> <cough> .. too much :P

Shar stole her power from Mystra back at Netheril.

And all of the power from Mystra going to Selune would be from all the Mystrans probably converting to her worship.

And Shar may have won but I'm pretty sure she lost more in the long run. Like Cyric, the death of Mystra has done her worse than her victory.

She's always been a Greater Goddess In My campaign!

Quite right. There is nothing stopping anyone from messing around with the books to put a different spin on things. I'm not a canonical purist in my work (what works, works, and what doesn't, doesn't: pure ideology in my line of work has caused the deaths of thousands, if not millions) and certainly wouldn't be if I was playing now.

And Shar may have won but I'm pretty sure she lost more in the long run. Like Cyric, the death of Mystra has done her worse than her victory.

There are a lot of interesting ideas floating around from various people and one of them is that Shar is Selune's mother and has made sure Selune has no access at all to anything resembling godly powers so that Selune's new fiance, Tyr can't get his mitts on her!

Sorry for being a bit facetious, but just because something is in one book doesn't mean it can't be overridden by your own imagination. If I was having to be serious I would be working from Faiths and Pantheons for the most part as a bare bones work for my campaign, and then seeing what happened in the course of the game with my own PCs. Adventurers can and do cause untold damage to a country or world (we've had one running our country for the last ten years - sorry if it violates the CoC but it's being used to illustrate an in-game point not to score points off someone who can't answer back) and powerful PCs should be able to influence events at some point during their careers. If I ran Khelben Arunsun, for example, as a DM, I'd have had him a bit less stuck-up and made him more of an activist, and I don't know what that would have done in the long-run to Waterdeep and Faerun, but certainly it would by now diverge from the actual Khelben as written in the books and he'd probably be openly running Waterdeep rather than stuck behind a mask with twelve others anonymous. (It offends me as a politician to see a city government so utterly unaccountable, for example; I'd rather have them all open to scrutiny and their identities public as it makes for more public confidence in the council chamber.)

The ideas bandied about here are all ideas that are worth pursuing in your individual campaigns. I never DMed when I played (didn't have the spare time to do so; between a young family, a political career as a city councillor, and a rapidly expanding legal career I played D&D as an escape from real life...and a chance to practice it without anyone getting hurt, least of all myself!!!) but given that I ended up functionally DMing in my real life career, I made a break with my predecessors and refused to stick to the published script. Imagination is necessary in this game and some of the forums make me feel that the current generation of role-players would be utterly lost were they to have to play with the set of stuff we had to in 1974. I do like having the books published to get me started, but I always encourage people to try and think for themselves rather than to adhere to anyone else's arbitrary rules. For some of you Mystra is dead, for some of you Selune got her power, some of you have Shar take it (personally I'd like to see Shar set herself up as a rival to Cyric or Bane or whoever is the current Big Evil Tyrant God; women can be more subtly evil and Shar's cult might be particularly adept at trying to whitewash the goddess for their own political ends, perhaps?), and some of you have Mystra still alive in their original form and Bane still going and lost touch with the books when they brought 2e out! It's your world - so you decide.

Selūne should be elevated to the status of Greater Goddess.

Specifically in my humble opinion I think this should occur after she--with the aid of Marco Volo Wands, Rinda the Bard, and Mirt the Moneylender--use an artifact in the possession of Kyriani Agrivar to open a gate to the Plane of Shadow, in the heart of the divine realm of the Lady of Loss.

Once there, they then proceed with impunity to effortlessly surprise, slay, and irrevocably cast down Shar forever in the heart of her own divine realm, all while the rest of the Faerūnian pantheon--along with the eternal triumvirate of common sense, game rules, and realism--take a back seat to sit idly on the sidelines. Oh yeah, it would also help if the PCs have nothing to say about it either.

Honestly I cannot imagine that being too far fetched of an outcome  , especially after the decade of contrived divine deaths that are predetermined to occur from 1375-1385, i.e. the ones which were latched onto the dress train of the otherwise masterful Grand History of the Realms.

Besides, it would let the authors resolve and set aside the storyline of the eternal war between Selūne and Shar, and in turn let them move on to tell new stories about Selūne.

Seems Shar didn't want to give Midnight the hundred years or so Midnight thought she needed to fully master her powers :)Shar has an INT score of 34, which puts her on equal footing with Larloch in the department of reasoning, planning, and cunning...for a greater deity, that is rather sad. Shar has a WIS score of 24, which is the lowest possible ability score a deity of demigod status or higher can have. Which means all the gods in all the pantheons across the multiverse of D&D are equal to or greater than she is in common sense, intuition, and willpower.

Mystra has an INT score of 45, and a WIS score of 40, which as noted above are greater than those of Shar. Mystra has higher knowledge check modifiers than Shar, and class abilities that enhance that knowledge. Mystra has an insurmountably greater access to divination and information gathering spells, magic items, and artifacts than Shar. Mystra has every domain and salient divine ability related to information gathering that Shar has, save for the redundant power of Know Death.

As for Selūne, well despite being an intermediate deity she is hardly beneath Shar in the area of cunning and intuition Selūne has an INT of 35 and a WIS of 38, and has higher knowledge modifiers in the field of arcana, history, the planes, and religion, which are most significant in struggles between the gods. Meanwhile, as a wizard and a cleric she has greater access to new divination and information gathering spells than Shar does.

So no, I am afraid I do not see it as reasonable for Mystra to be outwitted by Shar, nor do I see it as insurmountable for Selūne to do the opposite.

As for citing Ed Greenwood, I imagine if he was both consulted AND given the final say on matters of the Time of Troubles, the destruction of Mystra I and II, the Shadow Weave, or similar absurdities then I imagine we would not be discussing such things at all, as they likely would not exist in the first place.

10-26-07, 01:39 AM
Actually, the spellplague will wipe out all outer planes that are not controlled by any greater power. Since Selune's the nemesis of Shar and very popular, I can't imagine her being discarded in the 4th ed. As a result, there's little doubt that she will be introduced as a greater goddess.

Also, I can imagine her taking Sarva's portfolio - a nice contrast to Shar's powers.
The_Shaman

10-26-07, 04:23 AM
Sarva? Do you mean Savras, the god of divination?

Anyway, I wish Selune would get some more spotlight and thus be a greater deity; it is only fair as she is one of the oldest powers in the Realms and is involved in an age-long conflict with Shar. Then again, F&P makes a good point about her power being diminished by her wounds in the first fight. Plus, while Shar is the deity of primordial darkness, Selune is not the only deity of light - that portfolio is, justly or not, more affiliated with Lathander. If she could subsume him, sure - but I'd prefer to see something akin to the Dark moon heresy (iirc that was the name) in which Selune and Shar merge again in a TN deity of night.

As for her stat blocks... I suppose that the actual Realms designers were consulted, but like in many novels, statistics seem to take the back seat to any plots involved. I'm not sure how relevant they are in such a discussion, even if they were completely accurate lore-wise.

Well, Bane and Cyric have both been portrayed as idiots. Shar gets to be mysterious and off camera so it's easy to portray her as the most competent of all evil godsTM.

Weird, it infects MY table too. My players think she's the awesomest and scariest of gods and I don't know why.

It's why I hope her minions get smashed soon.
Zsych

10-26-07, 07:47 PM
One with sufficient experience and knowledge, really does not need to be overly intelligent or wise. Shar has been following the dark path for a long time. Stands to reason that even if she wasn't awesomly intelligent, she'd have seen enough and done enough that the plans she would concoct would surpass the reasoning ability of a normally more intelligent but basically young diety.

Selune too.. basically good(although it was her betrayal of Shar that caused the whole mess..), has most likely also never looked into the depths of evil and cunning(not to mention her letting herself fall from power).

It's always been the DM's responsibly to have the game focused on PCs. But I'm seeing steps being taken to make the setting in general more focused on the PCs (ie. forcibly getting certain NPCs out of the way). That, to me, is wrong.

I agree. FR is popular the way it is, it has its niche and shouldn't be messed with too much, targeting different customers, and possibly losing those Wizards has...

I'm not even sure why people focus on the more iconic realms characters if they're getting in the way of their games. Its a large world, they can all have plenty of other stuff going on in their lives, if they actually feel like doing something.

The_Shaman

If they knew, they might. While we're on a game topic, Icewind Dale II had a drow cleric of Selune in one of the pre-made parties. Not a great idea given the LA, but could work conceptually.
GothicDan

They might. But what would be more likely is a Drow (or any Elf) worshiping both equally.

Actually, the idea of worshiping Sehanine, Eilistraee, Selune, and Hathor all at once, would be really cool.

Seconded!

BTW, I also doubt that the drow, even the good ones, would turn to Sehanine either. For they should know about her too, which is hardly likely. Anyway, it would be good if the utter focus on religion when it comes to drow would shift somewhat. I mean, no problem with evil (NPC) drow and the grand evil Dark Mother, but you simply cannot run about as a "renegade" / non-conformist drow who just don't cares about religion (or at least not more than the average Faerūnian). Everyone turns on you asking: "Heya?! Eilistraee or Vhaeraun?" (As if they would know!) But given the deicide in progress, the focus on religion and the drow is becoming even tighter ...

I'm hoping that Selune gets a bump up in 4ed. It make sense given that we now have a goddess of evil magic (Shar) that one would need to balance that with a goddess of good magic (Selune).

Personally I always thought Selune had alot more character than Mystra. Mystra always seemed very bland, with the exception of her being the most Human of the gods, which in and of itself with her also being the weave struck me as being just a little too much, :)

So I am in for Selune being a greater goddess.

p.s. also when was Selune a servitor or Sune, I don't remember that.

Well, I'm assuming good Drow who would have at least had some knowledge as passed on to them from the clergy of Eilistraee - not talking about a "Drizzt" here. And in my game, I'd have the clergy of Eilistraee definitely teaching them about the "other side" of the Seldarine, including Sehanine and her attempts to hinder and expose Araushnee.

Selune can become the Greater Power she deserves to be, especially if she turns what's left of the Weave into a shawl and starts handling the portfolio of magic.

As for Shar, I've found she's interesting when not used as presented. The more I take the basics and run with it the more likeable she is as a villian-deity. A little less nhillism and gothiness, perhaps, both she and her priests will be welcome at any local coffeehouse or college band concert. :evillaugh

I thought Selune based on the following; 1. she takes in the lost - who would be more lost than good drow who have lost there god, and 2. I would think good surface drow would flock to a moon goddess as they are better adapted to live at night

Since Selune has some of the same attributes (minus the 'drowishness'), I wouldn't be surprised if....ugh, this is blasphemy. WotC is on a god-killing spree.

Another idea is that Eilistraee is cast out of the drow pantheon, as opposed to being killed. She allies herself directly with Sehahine and...oh wait, they're probably going to kill her off, too.

Get over it, Stigger. ;) Considering how Selune was once portrayed as a very matronly middle-aged/over-the-hill woman when masquerading as a tavern owner in Waterdeep (I believe it was Selune's Smile tavern in the AD&D comics), the thought made me chuckle a bit. If you think the quip is insulting, please. Look over a half-dozen threads where some members truly mean to be obnoxious or personal.

If I should ever post a baby-eating joke, however, by all means be offended then.

According to Eddie Izzard, babies taste like chicken... which is odd since humans taste like pork supposedly. Guess there's something going on there with ripeness issues.

Personally, I'd say kobolds tasted more like turtle... works better that way so we can spare the turtles and switch over to the more nature-friendly Kobold Soup...

Though on the hormone thing, as far as I can recall, men cycle a few times daily... so they'd be better adjusted to the later changes considering how often they go through it. And just for fun, mid life crisis only affects a relatively small percentage of men... 30% or less as I recall it, at least physically. Those who use it as an excuse for misbehaviour is probably higher though. ;)

Eddie's good. As for the cycles, I've heard that as well. I'm not really surprised. I don't look forward to the mid-50's or so when men start developing uh...well, you've seen the executioner from 300? Minus the nose ring and the arm blades. :gah:

Considering how Selune was once portrayed as a very matronly middle-aged/over-the-hill woman when masquerading as a tavern owner in Waterdeep (I believe it was Selune's Smile tavern in the AD&D comics), the thought made me chuckle a bit.

you believe correctly. It was written by Jeff Grubb I believe. Anywho, one of the characters appears (as well as her backround story from the series) in the most recent Waterdeep supplement

Yep, that would be Kyriani.

Coincidentally, I've decided that until the player characters rescue Mystra's mortal soul from the imprisonment of Gargauth (he's attempting to torture her for magical information and to "help" Sfenia), Selune is taking over for Goddess of Magic in the Realms.

Also, oddly enough, Kyriani is also showing up in our games now.

After the Spell Plague, Mystra will be a Lesser Goddess and Selune a Greater One that she serves.

Personally, most male mid life crises seem to be a direct response to having too much responsibility in their 20s. Realizing at 50 that they haven't really lived it up yet. Then well, its time to run off with the secretary, :)

Mid-life Crisis is just an excuse for guys to do dumb things and have a quasi-legit explaination for it. "The orgy you caught me in last night? Midlife crisis darling. I need help, I cannot control myself."

No, some of them do have a hormonal reaction to it that can mess their heads up... not as many as show symptoms so to speak, but it is a semi-legitimate excuse for some.

Though I would argue that there is a certain biological imperative behind it as well, in that the old spouse is beyond breeding age, and so has fulfilled her biological imperative, and so isn't really worth a 'virile' males time, since he must go and make babies... kinda why women seem to freak out with menopause, since they don't really have a biological purpose (breeding) anymore, so don't quite know what to do.

Which is not to say that men or women don't serve a purpose after a certain age, simply that nature designed us to breed, and then die after raising the next generation, and anything after that just being bonus time waiting to die. The advent of modern medicine has messed with that, so we're kinda in uncharted biological territory and have to figure out how to adapt to it.

I'm pretty sure that my hormones haven't changed since I was 16. Maybe other guys do, but not me. I still enjoy all the same things, and my tastes haven't changed much at all.

Maybe I just never grew-up. :P

It was hilarious.... :D

Could we move back to Selune here please and not biology?

On my case, I'm making Selune take Mystra's place in the pantheon until the time that the Goddess of Magic is ressurected.

Well, if one looks at the theories of the moon's, and by extension Selune's, effect on certain biological functions, then it is actually still on topic in some respects...
