sick of this [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-19-04, 03:44 PM Ugh, left and right THE ELVES AND EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM IS STOLEN FROM TOLKIEN, and stuff like that. of course it was there is always a starter for everything. next thing you know ALL ROCK MUSIC IS STOLEN FROM THE BEATLES. tolkien created a fantasy world that was so brilliant that people followed suit in their own way. of course it is going to have something to do with lotr, but i think Ed greenwood did a good job of creating differences, especially in the sense that he many other kinds of elves.

09-19-04, 03:49 PM I think it's easier for some people to immediately shout "He stole that!" than to admit that Ed adapted it because it was so good.

09-19-04, 03:51 PM I wonder why it bothers so many people that Greenwood ripped off so much of Tolkien for his world. Tolkien practically invented the fantasy conventions we play under and its what people want. If people didn't want this we would be playing Darksun*.

*I'm not slamming Darksun. Its a terrific setting superior in many, many ways to FR or GH.

09-19-04, 04:25 PM People who throw around accusations of plagiarism ('ripping off' etc.) so freely should look at the 'cauldron of story' entry, among others, in the Clute Encyclopedia of Fantasy. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of how creative and cultural processes work. They should also read more books: Tolkien is just one of many inspirations in 20th-century fantasy that Ed drew on.

Repeatedly accusing someone of plagiarism and breaking copyright is harassment, and harassment is definitely against the Code of Conduct (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=community/coc). Hiding your accusations behind "everyone knows this" or using a general "they" that avoids admitting you are talking about real people just makes it worse. Remember these people you are insulting, and whose ethics you are attacking actually read these forums ... and you wonder why so many of the writers have stopped posting here and answering questions. :(

Making claims about legal action and suing people that are not based in fact borders on libel. Face it ... if any of these claims were true then legal action would have been taken. Quite obviously it hasn't!

Be warned ... if you cannot discuss the sources that inspired the FR writers and designers without getting into this type of CoC violating posts then I will shut the thread down.
