I am Dm-img in the Nethrial age, Just me and one Pc so he is playing a Gnome monk. I want to give him spellfire, how does this work in the Nethrial age? Was their spellfire in the Nethrial age?

I don't see why there wouldn't be.... As for how it would work, well what really needs to be changed for it? I'd say it would work the same way....

It's only him, in a world of high magic, so I figured it would be fair.

Ouch.....poor gnome....your player does know that gnomes were slaves for a good part of Netheril's era? And even after they were freed, they were looked down upon with the same feelings as a rat. Definitely might consider giving him a bit more of an advantage also, such as the Epic Spellfire Channeler feat for free or something:P

A Gnome with Spellfire in the Age of Netheril....would make the troubles of Shandril Shessair look like a picnic in the park. Seriously.

1. Gnomes are a slave race. Gnome Rights? What's that?
2. Netherese Archmages revere power over anything else. Some of them have quite literally sold their souls for more power.

When word gets out that a Gnome controls something like Spellfire, he will be hounded across the continent and across the planes by power-hungry Archmages who seek the power of Spellfire for themselves.

Giving him Spellfire may be the worst thing you can do for the Gnome.

Well, maybe Spellfire didn't exist yet...

Someone has to be the voice of opposition, so I will take the role. Karsus did not cast his spell yet, so Mystryl still existed, and the rules of arcane magic casting were such that 9th level plus spells were available. Nowhere in Arcane Age material do I see Spellfire mentioned. So, maybe it did not exist until Mystra altered the rules of magic...

(:Is waiting for Kuje to correct me, as I can tell he will::))

I can't. :) You are one hundred percent right. There is no text that has been published that says it did. But my thinking is why wouldn't it? There was still a goddess of magic and so she could have allowed it.

But the only 1 who can answer this fully is Ed. :)

After thinking about it, I kinda like the idea.....as a story arc he could lead a slave revolt against the Netheril....after all...Deep Duerra did it against the Illithids, and she was just a little gnome at the time :)

Possibly, since the Weave existed in a different state than it does today, Spellfire could not exist for whatever reason. Thats the only piece of info that I am going on. Personally, I think it probably did, but yeah, its never mentioned so it may not have been around.

Yes, but the Weave was stronger then. I still don't see no reason to say that it didn't exist. :) But as I said only Ed can fully answer this.

Ah, I thought up of a interesting reason why it might not have existed then, even though the Weave was stronger. It sounds reasonable, if I have all of my information correct, which I am mostly sure I do. The Weave maintained my Mystryl allowed arcanists to cast spells of extreme power (10-12 Level Spells). When Karsus cast his spell, and Mystryl was reborn as Mystra, the way magic worked changed. Magic users could no longer cast spells of this strength. But, the power within the Weave itself was still there, and would eventually need to be 'drained'. If not, perhaps there would be some kind of 'Overload'. So, Mystra randomly places the excess spell energy, now Spellfire, in the bodies of mortals.
Sounds good?

It snds good but I still don't buy it. :) I see no reason why Spellfire couldn't exist ever since there was a deity of magic. But I put the question to Ed and I await his words.

And furthermore that is what the Chosen are for. :) The storing of Mystra's extra power.

While there is nothing that says Spellfire existed, there is also nothing saying that it didn't. :D

Yup. :) But Karsus and I are having a friendly debate about it. :) Until I either go, AH HA! See your wrong or well your right and Ed agrees with you. :D But that won't happen until Ed answers.

If I was a Dungeon Master that needed Spellfire for a campaign set in Nethril, I'd say it exists regardless of what's printed in some book somewhere, or even what Ed says.

His words, just like anything else printed in a book, are all secondary to your campaign's needs.

Outside of a campaign and just 'looking at the Realms', my initial response would be no, it didn't exist. As I understand it Ao had not imposed limits on Mystril as he'd done so for Mystra, so Mystril was under no duress to portion out her power to mortals in order to keep her overall power in check.

No Chosen, no spellfire.

Ah heck, I just realized I mixed up spellfire with silver fire.

But does that mean spellfire should or shouldn't exist?

It's really up to you. ;)

Here's Ed's answer:

"April 19, 2005: Hello, all. Ed makes reply to kuje31 in the matter of spellfire during the divine reign of Mystryl:

Hi, kuje. There have always been humans (and possibly members of other magic-using races) whose Talent for the Art manifested in a way akin to sorcery, but rather than allowing them to cast spells (‘shaped’ force of the Weave, if you will, twisted and applied precisely by incantations to produce specific, predictable effects [i.e. spells]), instead resulted in their unleashing ‘raw’ Weave energy (spellfire). This preceded organized magic use, and thus all deities of magic, so there was certainly spellfire in the time of Mystryl.

What there wasn’t was much knowledge, even among wizards and sages specializing in magic, of its existence, or even a name for it. Most spellfire-wielders destroyed themselves spectacularly (or were slain by fearful folk using arrows or flung rocks or whatever) before achieving any sort of mastery or much understanding of their own powers, much less that OTHERS had (or had previously possessed) such abilities. So the ability existed, but was known to very, very few.

So saith Ed. Onward into the bright flames of future Realmslore! Blades out, all! GLORY!
love,
THO"
