Are there any official teamsports in the Realms?

I'd love to see a soccer match between Athkatla and Calimport. :D

-They have "The Ball Game" in Maztica. I wouldn't be surprised if it migrated to Amn by now.

-I seem to recall Ed answering a similar question over the the 'Keep a while ago. You might want to go and rummage around his responses.

Ed does touches on several Realms-based sports in his '04 and '05 replies over at Candlekeep.

Thanks, for the responses. I'll check them out.

it makes me wonder, why this has not seen a more prominently outwork, as in our world it's very important.

The Maztican ballgame is in a way like basketball if I'm not completely mistaken. With some bloody elements in it, of course.

Would be fun to know which nations qualify for the Faerunian World Champion Ship in which ever category.
But the population in fantasy worlds seems more interested in gladiatorial arena based sports or chivalric tournament than "games". ;)

-It's not very good idea comparing now to the Realms. The best way to do comparisons are by comparing the Middle Ages/Renaissance to the Realms. The Middle Ages/Renaissance are a lot more similar to the Realms than the world today.

-Now, where were the sports organizations then, during the Middle Ages/Renaissance? Well, things weren't very structured, thus, there really weren't any. Same rule of thumb applies to the Realms, methinks.

That's a point, didn't think of it that way.
But there were sports in the Renaissance or the middle ages besides chivalric tournament, but it was no thing for the people, but for arisotcrats. Other people didn't have time or muse to play, they tried to survive.

From the top of my head I know, that some kinds of organized ball games existed in France during the reign of Louis XIV. But it was not for the public for sure.:)

More like soccer. They had to kick the ball through the hoop.
It's detailed in the Maztica boxed set (available for free on wizard's classic download page), in 2ed rules.
(I've got 3.5 conversion that still needs to be playtested if anyone is interested)

Ok, it's kind of long. I've posted this several times on various boards over the years, if it is on wizards, I believe it's been archived.

I've been told its rather similar to something like blood bowl d20, or something like that, you would have to judge for yourself.

The Ball Game
General Rules
The game is played between two teams consisting of 3 to 6 players on each team with a rubber or stuffed leather ball approximately 8-10 inches in diameter. The ball is considered a thrown ranged martial weapon with a range increment of 10ft for determining attack roll bonuses and penalties. If the ball is used to deal damage, it deals 1d4 points non-lethal damage plus the attackers strength bonus in the first range increment, half strength bonus (rounded down) in the second range increment, strength bonus is ignored from the third range increment and beyond. Regardless of a characters BAB and number of attacks per round, typically only one attack per round is allowed. A character still gets any available attacks of opportunities (including those gained from the Combat Reflexes feat).
The ball is not to be touched by hands. Other body parts are required to move the ball (head, hips, elbows feet, etc).
A team wins a game by scoring three goals; a match consists of three games. A game can also be won, instantly, if a player knocks the ball through one of the hoops in the wall.

TO PUT THE BALL IN PLAY: A player is selected from each team. Both players start with ready actions to gain control of the ball by making opposed dexterity checks. The player with the highest roll wins and is considered to be in control of the ball. If this roll is equal, another roll is made, this continues until one player is successful. Initiative is rolled for all players and the game follows as if it was combat. At the start of each game and after each point play is started in this way. .

PASSING THE BALL: Is a free action. You must currently have control of the ball. Passing the ball has a DC 5 while ball in static DC 10 when moving, this is made as a dexterity check. This send the ball into the 5’ area containing the character you are passing to. Failing the dexterity check results in the ball moving into an adjacent square as if Moving Unconcroled.

RECEIVING A PASS: A character must be aware that they are to be the recipient of the pass.

GAINING CONTROL OF THE BALL: As a standard action, or as an attack of opportunity, a character can attempt to gain control of the ball. To gain control of the ball a character must make a successful attack roll opposed to the balls AC using the characters attack bonus with the ball. The armor class of the ball depends one of 4 states, Static (unmoving, uncontrolled) AC 10, Moving Uncontrolled or Receiving a Pass (anytime no player has active control of the ball) AC 12, Controlled movement (intercepting a pass, blocking a shot at the goal) AC 15, Active control AC 15 + controlling characters dexterity bonus + other applicable dodge AC bonuses. If the ball travels through the square the character occupies (not threatened) when the character starts his turn, the character gains a +2 circumstantial bonus due to the close proximity

BLOCKING THE BALL: As a standard action, or as an attack or opportunity, a character can stop the movement of a ball that passes into a square threatened by the character with a successful attack roll. The character makes an attack role as if he is trying to gain control of the ball with a +2 bonus to the attack role. If successful, the ball stops movement and is now considered static. A character with 5 or more ranks in Tumbling gains an additional +1 bonus.

TO SHOOT: At the opposing goal, a player must make an attack against AC 10 with the ball. While the ball is traveling to the goal line, all opposing players whose area and threatened areas the ball passes through gets a chance to block or gain control of the ball. If no character blocks or gains control of the ball, the ball continues over the goal line and scored one point.

Closed Court Rules
The closed court is hard packed dirt in a rectangle 15’ by 45’; the 5’ on each end of the long side is the goal line making the playing field 15’ by 35’. The length of the field is walled, perpendicular to the goal lines. At midpoint, a ring is mounted vertically out from the wall about 15 feett high. The open part of the ring points to the goal lines. One player from each team defends the goal line by positioning themselves where they threaten the 3 5foot squares in front of the goal line. The other players play the rest of the field.

In the closed court rules, feet are not allowed to make a shot at the goal or ring. Sometimes, the fields are larger, but the general rules apply. The kicking of the ball is allowed only to get the ball off the ground and back into play. A player cannot maintain control of the ball. The attack role the character takes to gain control of the ball is the hit needed to pass the ball. To shoot the ball, an additional attack role is required as in the general rules.

TO SHOOT: At the ring on the wall: A player must make an attack against AC 25 with the ball, and requires concentration. Since the ring is 15 feet high, any shoot at the hoop is normally one range increment greater then the characters distance from the hoop would appear (add 10 feet to the calculation). The line of sight of the hoop needs to be considered also. Spaces adjacent to the wall the attack is made from have no concealment, spaces at 45 degrees from the hoop would be considered concealed. While the square containing the hoop and 60 degrees and greater, the hoop is considered total concealed.
Making a successful hoop shot wins the game and a mater of great status.

Open Court Rules
The open court rules game is used in the more rural areas. There is no fixed size for the open court. A field can be as small 30 feet by 50 ft to several miles. There have been games played between two villages that village centers are used as the goal lines. The goals can also be of different sizes randing from AC 5 for large goals to AC 15 for small goals. The typical 3 to 5 players per team on the field can increase to 50 players on a side for the games played on larger fields..

RUNNING WITH THE BALL: A character can maintain control of the ball while running by using a series of short kicks, this is considered controlled movement. The character can only move at run(x3). A Character with the run feat is capable of reaching speeds of Run (x4). This is assuming no armor or light armor, and carrying a light load or below. If loaded, or wearing armor, consider a character’s top speed is one category less then they are capable of.

OBSTICALS: Most games played on defined fields are played in clearings, making obstacles not an issue. Other games are played with through the woods, buildings, and over hills. The typical rules for movement are applied. A character maintaining control of a ball has a max speed on one category less then they normally would.

OPTIONAL RULES: Scoring from 1 point to 10 points needed to win the game. Extremely large games that take several days to complete allow no movement of ball between sunset and sunrise. Ball placed into play at the goal line of the team that last scored.

You could always 'borrow' the Bloodbowl game from Warhammer. It's just like American football, only bloodier (rugby with monsters... no, wait... that would the Irish) ;)

I picture some Greco-Olympian style games appearing in the North soon, with friendly competitions from the loose confederation of cities of the Silver marches and the Lord's Alliance. Throw in the hateful Luskan teams and you got yourself a party! :D

Of course, the Elven gymnastics team woould have an unfair advantage, with both their natural lithness and agility, AND those teeny tiny leopard skin leotards....

geez... I really do need to get out more.... :rolleye2:

Magefairs have magic tournaments. Toss the fireball, Spellduals, who can levitate the longest....And so on. Perhaps not the team sports you are looking for, but tournament activities that would more likely be held during the comparable time frame of the realms.

Anyone for some Magehand Basketball?:P

I thought the levitate thing was done by drow, or a particular drow house in menz, over some chasm.

Not sure I'd agree with the Medieval/Rennaisance comparison too much... not enough focus on Feudalism and its attendent wonders of serfdom, at least not that I've seen any evidence of in anything other than a mention of it in the FRCS, which seemed very much at odds with the Volo's Guides depictions of places. Add in the whole adventurer model, and the idea of feudalism/serfdom just doesn't make much sense. Wouldn't be enough freedom of travel, much less availability of weaponry and armor if it were actually the case, since no feudal lord in his right mind would ever give anyone permission to own it that wasn't directly in service to or part of the nobility. Add into that the general freedom that the Volo's Guides portray for commoners, and it makes even less sense. I'd very much say that free time existed in the Realms, given the portrayal of taverns, festhalls, and inn taprooms.

As to sports... well, you could say that Quidditch exists in Halruaa... or a carpet version of it Calimshan.... :D

Think most of the recreation sports I've heard mentioned mostly revolve around boardgames and the like, rather than organized field sports. But they almost certainly have to exist, since its mentioned that Lathander is a patron of sports, maybe in F&P or F&A, if I recall correctly.

MarkusTay63

04-25-07, 05:10 PM
I'm diggin' that, Stig. :D

I had it in the back of my mind that several 'potter-like' schools exist in my realms. Hogwarts would of course be located in Halrua, Beauxbatons in Silverymoon, and Durmstrang somewhere in the Narfell region, possibly on the shores of the Great Ice sea. I never really developed the concept, but I figure a new one would be popping up in Cormyr, with all the changes to that realm and Vangderghast (the old gaurd) leaving.

But now I'm seeing potential for several regions having Quidditch teams, including Waterdep, Thay, Nimbral, etc....

And each would use different 'methods' of flight, with brooms being the norm.

The Elven Eagle riders of Evermeet cheat. :P

You can just hear the announcers - "...and the Drow team has taken yet another head from their opponents..." :dancin:

Yes, that's it. Bloodbowl for the 'common' areas, and Quidditch for the 'elitists' (think high and low Netheril). I'm liking this a lot... :plotting:

But I'd prefer a game where more players are on the field, and there is perhaps less speed and more brutality. :evillaugh
MarkusTay63

04-26-07, 03:09 PM
The 'bludgers' are extremely heavy balls designed to PUMMEL players! The school teams are just kids and they get broken bones and even occassionly get killed; how much more brutal do you want it? :uh-huh:

The soccer analogy was good, or perhaps even basketball. The teams are small, tight units that have learned to work very well together, unlike sports with much larger teams.

The only extremely unrealistic element (aside from the whole 'flying' thing) is that the teams are only composed of EXACTLY the people who need to play, with NO alternates.

Every time someone gets sick or is unable to play the game becomes a forfeit. You would think these 'wizard-types' would have 'invented' the concept of putting 'fresh players' in. Wizards = Unbelievable powers, zero common sense.
Stigger

04-26-07, 04:25 PM
Actually, the game isn't forfeit, the other team just comes in short of members... take a read through Quidditch Through The Ages and that becomes pretty apparent. Only weenies have alternates afterall, and not many reasons to miss games with St. Mungo's around really...
Khaelieth

The Drow have the funny goblin game. They release their goblin slaves, make 'em run, and riddle 'em with bolts!

But horsing about should be quite common in Narfell, Tuigan-land and the like. You've also got the Mage's Duel thingy.

And for the REAL mages - jump into random portals, last man to die's a sissy!

But I think "yes" I like the idea of some kind of mass sports spectacle for the realms (of course not on a core rule basis), and simply wanted to have some opinions on that.

And there is the very fun game I invented back when I ran T&T, using the Monsters, Monsters! supplement.

It's called "Troll Darts" - first, you and your troll buddies round up a bunch of fairies. Usually pretty easy to do in the woods at night using butterfly nets and Nigtvision. Then, after you got a bunch of them in a cage, you draw a crude target on the wall of your cave. Some trolls just prefer to take the fairies and throw them at the target with all their might, but those with a little more finesse play it 'the right way'. You grab a fairy around the middle, point its little head at the target, then put your thumb under it's chin and FLICK! The head usually makes a pleasing 'POP' when it hits the wall, and the rest makes a nice, tastey snack.

And that's 'Troll Darts'. :D
