Azuth 07-24-07, 08:29 AM	Hi everyone, To my great joy two of my friends and I have finally managed to clear our schedule, and after almost 5 years of no gaming we're getting back into some Realms action! :D The question I’ve got is actually at the bottom of the post, but since I’m rather excited about getting a campaign started again I’ve written some info about it below. :rolleyes: Both of the players want to play spellcasters, and since there are only two of them I'm going to run the campaign very centred on the magical events happening from 1372 and onwards in the Realms. (The campaign will start sometime during 1371 to have some time to get acquainted with the current time.) More specifically I'll include plots and adventures relating to the return of the Shades and the emergence of the Shadow Weave in particular and various adventures into the lost empires around Faerûn looking for lost magic and lore. The characters will both be from Halruaa, but they’ve gone out into the broad world to seek adventure. One will be a human wizard (probably taking levels in Ultimate Magus and Incantatar as the game progresses) and the other will be a human cleric of either Mystra or Azuth (probably taking some levels in Mystic Theurge or something). The first part of the campaign will bring them to the Unapproachable East, how long they’ll stay in that region depends on how it all goes, but eventually they’ll get involved in the return of the Shades and also battle the increasing might of the Shadow Weave. Now for my question, what kind of reaction does low-level Halruaan spellcasters meet in other parts of the Realms? I can understand that going into Thay broadcasting their origin wouldn’t be very smart – but would they be more likely targets of power-hungry wizards in other countries? There’s not much information about this in the Shining South book, and the few Halruaan characters travelling abroad in the novels I’ve read are usually high-level wizards etc. They don’t need to worry about saying they’re from Halruaa, since they can back it up with spells, low-level characters can’t. In some places, like Amn, for example, Wizards are dispised. In other places, like Waterdeep, Wizards are common. As for the question if they'd be targets by other power-hungry Wizards? That, also, depends. This time, though, I think it would depend on their exploits. You are going to become a target if you are known as "The Slayer of Dragons and Demigods", not "The Consumer of Ale", you know?

A good point to consider, is are the PCs actively advertising that they are from Halruaa or do they believe more in discretion? Unless they walk around with a sign saying just that, it's unlikely that anyone will simply recognize their heritage just by looking at them.

I guess I may have worded myself abit poorly, but the information about Halruaa avaliable to most of the countries outside the Shining South is mostly that it's a country of great magical mystery and power. As far as I can collect from the Shining South accessory this hasn't changed much. Considering this, would low-level casters from Halruaa stand out as a golden-price for dubious spellcasters in other parts of the Realms that want to use them to blackmail their teachers for Halruaan magic? Not to mention other spellcasters wanting to challenge them for duels, after all, who wouldn't want to have "Defeated Halruaan wizard" on their resumè. I'm not going to make them spend most of their low- to mid-level running from other spellcasters out to get their or their mentor's spells, but I'm unsure if I should inform them that advertising where they hail from might not be a great idea - at least not until they are at a level where they can defend themselves better - or if I'm just overestimating how legendary Halruaa is. -Azuth

We haven't started playing yet, but I figure it's fair to give them some hints or information about what the consequences of each course of action will be. If they choose to advertise that they're from Halruaa, I guess some people will be a bit careful about what they try... but others might act opposite. It's how often it would be opposite I'm kind of uncertain about. :) -Azuth
