| Aloki06-29-07, 06:34 AM | I am going to be starting a group of new players in the Realms, and i can't decide on WHEN to set it... I know where... Mostly... I was going to start them near Cormanthor, and work them into the Underdark. I just don't know when i want to set it :P |
| Light_Colonel06-29-07, 07:36 AM | Coincidentally I am about to start running a Realms campaign. Specifically Expedition to Undermountain, leading to who knows where... So, mine is set current year. Have you checked out the Realms supermodules? I hear the first one kind of sucks.... plus I don't know if you are a fan of using a mod as the basis of your own stuff. My campaign should be kicking off just in time for the release of MMV.:D |
| Faraer06-29-07, 11:51 AM | What's most convenient for you? If it was me, I'd set it some time in the 1350s DR, because I find the Realms then a better setting for roleplaying, avoiding a lot of irrelevancies and dodgy decisions. If you know the Realms more from the latest FRCS, it's easiest to use 1372 or so. |
| MerrikCale06-29-07, 10:37 PM | I think my preference would be to kick it off in the current year this way the players wouldn't know some of the potential future. |

I agree, its good for new players who really don't own too many books and need a convenient date to start with plenty of campaign seeds. I am planning my Realms campaign as well, I though, have read too many novels, I will have to think about the date... |
| Aloki06-30-07, 02:15 AM | Well... The players know next to nothing about D&D and the Realms... Except for one who plays Icewind Dale... His Pc sucks... Anyway, I was thinking about 1372, The Year of Wild Magic, I just need to get PGtF and FRCS, which will probably happen within the next month, as I am getting a job soon. Oh, and how 3.5 is Races of Faerun? |
| MerrikCale06-30-07, 08:06 AM | Oh, and how 3.5 is Races of Faerun? I'm fairly confident that RoF is 3e not 3.5 |
| captaincarot06-30-07, 08:30 AM | I'm fairly confident that RoF is 3e not 3.5 this is true, but there's nigh on bugger all difference between the 2 editions as far as the book is concerned, this si stated some where close to the front of PGTF. |
| MerrikCale06-30-07, 09:06 AM | this is true, but there's nigh on bugger all difference between the 2 editions as far as the book is concerned, this si stated some where close to the front of PGTF. Agreed. Plus, I consider it one of the better 3e sourcebooks |

I started my campaign recently with my son and daughter in ashenbenford, in the dales area. I love to fight start off fighting drow and its leading into an even bigger scenario. (My own of course). :) |
| Evilevi07-01-07, 01:50 AM | only thing you want to do with PGtF is check it to see if there was anything they updated from RoF. The main point of PGtF was to update FR to 3.5e but most of the changes are superficial and mainly apply to char. creation. as to the other question, i tend to run things in the current year for the storyline options, but i also know there's a certain nostalgia for taking it back a few years or decades to a simpler time where you can maybe affect some of the more exciting things that have transpired over the years, or just avoid them in general =) |
| ancalimohtar07-03-07, 07:23 AM | Races of Faerun is almost entirely 3.5. There are very few things you will need to update manually. |
| Aloki07-03-07, 10:56 PM | Oh, ok, i was flipping through it today, and i noticed that the gnomes (rock) still have illusionist as their favored class. I got PGtF today, and it is pretty cool! |

Oh, and how 3.5 is Races of Faerun? similar with my players, a few just read some of the Drizzt novels, and they have also played Demon Stone. But that is it. Its gonna be a pain teaching them how to do things the FR way (reducation is sooo annoying) |
| ShadezofDis07-06-07, 10:39 AM | I decided to start my game in early 1369 (though I may have to put it in 1368, if wizards can do retroactive retcons then I can too!) because I wanted to get more familiar with the current realms plots since I'd taken a few years off. ;) I like running in the recent past, my players aren't all that realms savy but I run my game in relatively "untouched" areas (currently in Turmish, yes, been there a while, they've got stuff to do :P) and I plan to give them tid bits about the events in the world (though the war in the Sea of Fallen stars will have impact) and depending on the events the PCs might have to deal with them. I'm thinking about making the whole "Shades cause a drought due to melting the Great Glacier" deal a potentially huge problem for the PCs . . . which may or may not line up with my plot line that I have right now. ::shrugs:: We only get a game in every month and a half or so, so I probably shouldn't be thinking of these things now. ;) |
| Dragonan07-06-07, 05:06 PM | Can anyone tell me where I could get a good overview of the timeline in FR? |
| captaincarot07-07-07, 04:29 AM | Can anyone tell me where I could get a good overview of the timeline in FR? the forgotten realms campaign setting or a grand history of the realms. |
| MerrikCale07-08-07, 03:06 PM | by the way, whats the new party's makeup? |
| Aloki07-09-07, 01:07 AM | Not really sure yet, but one for sure is going to be a ranger, and I KNOW one of them is going to want to be a bard... Not sure about the others |
