Starting my first FR campaign? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I posted this in another forum and got some good tips, but I am hoping some FR vets can help a bit more.

I have spent quite a bit of time on my first campaign. My players went from levels 1 to 12. Now I think I want to try something new. I am sure my players would love an FR campaign. My idea is to give them a level and let them pick the race and class from any of the books I have, whether they want to be human or minotaur. Starting at level 12 should give them a lot of room to create their character.

I assume they will make a non-PHB race character. So where in FR would be a cool place to start a group of beasts? Isn't there a region where orcs, kobolds, goblins, and such are commonplace? The idea is to start them in an area that makes sense according to their race. I have been reading through the books, but most of the cities are predominately human.

I was pointed towards Vaasa, The Lake of Steam, Amn (because of a beast invasion), and the city of Murann.

Thanks.

PS: Are the Underdark and Unapproachable East books 3.5? Does Unapproachable East include Vaasa?

I suggest Vaasa as well.

There is a trade fair there, once ayear for a tenday that would work nicely for them to buy gear, and pick up adventuring tales.

Its a decent starting point.

Great, I'll read through the book a little more in-depth. Is there info in the book about the fair? Is there anywhere on the web where I can get more info about Vaasa or FR in general?

Yes they are, and no it doesn't.

Maybe you should wait until you know what races they'll play before you pick a region. If they choose to play thri-kreens, yuan-ti and wemics, Vaasa is definitely not the place where they should start.

Oh, definately, I'll wait to see what they are doing first. I just want to use this time to familiarize myself with FR so I can be a little more prepared for whatever they pick.

Chult wouldn't be a bad place either. Jungle type setting, dinosaurs, etc. :)

Actually, Narfell is the land with the Trade Fair. Narfell is big on goblinoids, but not so much everything else monstrous. I'm sure you could fit other monsters in as adventurers though.

Nelanther Isles. There's a predominantly non-human region. :D It's mainly pirate-based though, so that might cause problems. They're pretty close to Amn, so you can tie those two together.

Skullport (Underdark near Waterdeep)could be good, too. Practically every race is seen there in some form or another.

Borris almost described the perfect setting for a Shaar-based monster group. The Shaar is in more detail in Shining South.

Hope this helps. :)

DAMN!! I typed Vaasa didn't I? well... I had the right idea. It is Narfell, and it is still a great story hook, and beginning for characters.

Chult is another good idea, depending on what type of races are chosen, as indicated above as well.

Sorry for the confusion... this is what I get for trying to go by memory at work :ahem:

No problem, I just so happened to have the book sitting by my desk, so I could verify it. Vaasa and Narfell are really close geographically, and kind of close culturally, so that's a really easy mistake to make. I do it all the time too. I usually just say "That one place with the Trademeet!" :D

Haha yeah, I should have just said 'Trademeet'.

Are there various monsters wandering Vaasa after the fall of the Witch-King? Some of them might be undead, not sure, but maybe scattered humanoid armies from the conflict with Damara.

As far as I can tell, yes.

Last night I read through the area thoroughly. Once the Witch-King was defeated, a large amount of the creatures in his army still wonder the area.

I really like the way the FRCS is written. They have left so many openings and plot hooks for the DM to play with. Of course that was their intention, but until I started reading more of it, I didn't realize how many options a DM has. One thing that really intrigued me was Castle Perilous and the possible growing power (maybe some one has picked up where the Witch-King left off). Another was Glacier of the White Worm (it's location is too far south not to have magic playing a role, and the creatures living there).

Fun stuff!

I'd suggest Veldorn or The Shaar.
