| Kataki07-30-03, 11:14 PM | I just got the three core rulebooks and I want to play in the FR setting. As I understand it there is a supplementary rulebook for the FR Campaign Setting, so I know I need to get that, but what I want to know is this; Is there a sourcebook for RPing Elves? The title The Complete Book of Elves is going round in my head, but I can't find a mention of it in on the Wizards site. Or maybe all I need is the FR book? As a last, sort of bonus question, can I make up a character now using the standard 3.5e Player's Handbook and later convert it to a FR subrace, or is it totally different? Thanks for your help  . |

The title The Complete Book of Elves is going round in my head, but I can't find a mention of it in on the Wizards site. The CBoE was a 2nd edition AD&D book, years out of print. If you want specific info on the elves of the Realms, get "Races of Faerun." It is new and still on book shelves. Or maybe all I need is the FR book? You'd need it anyway to play in the Realms. :) Ther eis some info on the world's elves, but not to the extent of Races of Faerun. As a last, sort of bonus question, can I make up a character now using the standard 3.5e Player's Handbook and later convert it to a FR subrace, or is it totally different? The standard D&D elf is equivalent to the Realms' "Moon Elf." Other elven subraces have different ability adjustments. "Sun Elves" get +2 Int rather than Dex. "Wild Elves" get +2 Dex, -2 Int. "Wood Elves" get +2 Str, +2 Dex, -2 Con, -2 Int, -2 Cha. Beyond that the differences ar ein attitude and culture. |
| Desies07-31-03, 02:35 AM | the only books you need to play succesfully in Faerun is the three core books and the FRCS. However if you want to spice it up a bit you should get the Magic of Faerun and Races of Faerun supplements. Their are also area specific books like the Silver Marches and Unapproachable East as well as a Monsters Compendium. |
| BlueDragon07-31-03, 05:45 AM | I recommend you start with the FRCS and Monsters of Faerun. Thats all you need to start the campaign (and the core rulebooks of course). If you really want to know more about the races, get the Races of Faerun too. Why not read through the FRCS first (will take a while) and then decide if you need any more books? |
| Kataki07-31-03, 09:40 AM | Ok thanks, you've all been very helpful. I will be getting the FRCS tomorrow so I will take BlueDragon's advice and read through that before deciding, though I expect I will still get the Races of Faerun just 'cos I can't bear not knowing everything ;) . Just as a side point, I recently started playing the CRPG Neverwinter Nights, set in the Silver Marches. Now, I don't know too much about the races of Faerun, but I (thought I) knew a little. Now, in NWN you can type in a subrace after selecting your base race, though it makes no rules difference and is just purely cosmetic. I called one of my elven characters a Gold Elf, and I had in mind what may also be referred to as a High Elf (a la Warhammer, or just the default Tolkien elves) and another of my characters was called a Sylvan Elf, which was meant to be a Wood Elf (a la Warhammer's wood elves or the Wood Elves of Tolkien). So, did I put the right names in for Faerun? I think I didn't, but it would be nice to be told that I did :) -- afterall, I don't want to be an elf in the wrong CS  . |
| Faraer07-31-03, 10:36 AM | Re playing elves, I suggest you download Cormanthyr: Empire of the Elves (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/2/fr_downloads/tsr1165.zip) and read pages 14-19. You put in the right names, though there are variants. |
