Together with a few friends I am stating a D&D group from scratch.
Some of them know the Forgotten Realms from the well known games, but I do not.

What is an easy way for me to learn about Faerūn?

well, the FRCS and the soon to be released Grand History of the Realms are probably the best places to start. These boards and Candlekeep are good places too. Then go from there with other sources like Lords of Darkness, Lost Empires of Faerun, Faiths & Pantheons, Races of Faerun, and Power of Faerun

Thank you for replying, although I don't know what FRCS means. My search ended up with the "Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons" and I'm quite sure you didn't mean that. :D

edit: Does anybody know any short stories or fan fiction in the Forgotten Realms?
I'm dyslexic, so I can't read a whole book.

there are many books of short stories in the Realms. Try the three Best of the Realms series. The first volume covers some of what WOTC view as the best stories. Voume 2 deals with Ed Greenwood stories. And Volume 3 features Elaine Cunningham. There are also several "Realms of" Books that have short stories on specific topics such as Realms of Elves, etc
