Starting Regions? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have just recently got the FRCS a couple of days ago, and have read it a couple of times, and have read lots of novels in the past, so Im no real FR noob. But unfortunately my players are.

So basically what I am asking is for a good starting region or regions to start a FR campaign for players who are new to FR and have only played core d&d homebrews in the past. I will teach them about some stuff about the FR before hand like timekeeping and the history and they will pick FR characters.

I'd go with the Sword Coast/Waterdeep/Western Heartlands as a good section of the Realms to start out with, as it's nicely centered and has a variety of populations, as well as interesting places to explore and adventure in. Neighboring regions include the North, Cormyr, the Dragon Coast, and Amn, just in case the first three regions don't quite fit (good for the barbarian, roguish, and knightly types).

06-18-05, 08:22 PM I'd argue that the two best starting places for any new players are the Dalelands or the Silver Marches.

The Silver Marches is very traditional high fantasy, and the Dalelands of course, are the default setting IMHO for practically the same reason.

06-18-05, 09:59 PM I've use Shining South / Halruaa, myself.

It's got some of the most impressive sites in the realms (Great Rift and Skyships) and is fairly isolated, letting the PCs absorb the world around them some before exploring the world at large.

One great draw for PCs is hearing about places like the huge city of Waterdeep, or the huge desert, etc. And Halruaa is a great place to learn about either, especially if the party has a Wizard and you do a Halruaan wizard's guild. Halruaa loves Ancient Netheril, which would lead them to the desert, for instance.

06-19-05, 01:35 AM I love Shining South but it's not traditional fantasy. So, what you want? Read the FRCS..I agree silver marches/Sword Coast/Western Hearthlands are the best choice.
