I had the stronghold builders guide and the forgotten realms - core book in my arms reach, and though I might aswell ask if there is anything special I should remember, when making a stronghold in Faerūn. I have 120, 000 gp to use for this stronghold, I am a lawful evil drow ninja and I would like to live near Baldur's gate or Waterdeep, if possible (BG, preferably).

This is the first time I'm making a stronghold to Forgotten realms, so about any advice is valuable.

ok let's stop and seriously THINK for a minute.
if your drow builds a fortress of some type anywhere NEAR a human city, what do you realisticly expect will happen.

realisticly you can expect them to send adventurers or troops after you.

A stronghold need not be an obvious fortress or castle. Unless I'm missing something, that is. Could an assassin (ninja?) not built a hidden fortress from where he and his minions might operate?

Kind of like Cobra? ;)

I don't think there's anything special one needs to worry about for constructing strongholds in FR.

As there are plenty of wooded areas and cavern areas near Baldur's Gate, there shouldn't be any problem finding a secluded area to construct a hidden base. Of course, make sure it stays hidden. An evil Drow Ninja isn't likely to recieve a warm welcome anywhere on the surface.

Lawful Evil Drow Ninja?...How did this come to be?

The mouth of the Winding Water is almost halfway between Waterdeep and Baldur's Gate and would allow sea access and river travel. It is in fact the place that one of my groups decided to found an entire country, and build a new trade route connecting Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep by going straight up the coast to shorten merchant travel time. However you might want to consider that one of your neighbors would be Larloch(we struck a deal with him) and you would be subject to constant troll attacks from the Troll Hills clans. We ended up pretty much razing this area to the ground. Not exactly scenic but very effective for troll control.

Being a drow wouldn't you want the fortress to be in the underdark? It would also help hide your fortress.

leaving aside all the questions about race and alignment you actually have everything you need to build the stronghold - except you problably need about 3 times the cash you have. my basic suggestions is to simply play - build 2-5 strongholds just for fun at different sizes and styles so you are familiar with the process and costings etc. then b uild the real one for the PC once you have a good sense of what costs are likely to be and wht you want, must have, prefer, and can leave out.

How about a 3 room cottage with a permanent Mordenkainen's Manificent Mansion somewhere. Spend the rest of the money on allowing it to move.

Why not have it somewhere underground near Dragonspear or even in Undermountain ( A lot of undisturbed real estate in there!)? My old group (the Dealers of Devestation) was neutral to evil and ended up right there on the same level (3) as Skullport in Undermountain. It worked fine for all of them.

essential? no - useful yes.

the big problem is funding; your 120,000 GP will go amazingly quickly. As said before - play before you build the official PC stronghold simply play with the rules and see what you can do several times and with different goals and amounts of money - or better yet just goals and then see what the nmoney comes out to after. once you have a good feel for what you can and can't get then build the PC's stronghold.

PoF will be helpful in running the stronghold and placing it in the realms and campaign but not in building the structure. It may help you define the sorts of fortifications etc you want but the regional source books will do as much or more of that.

There's...a stronghold book? Does anyone have a link or anything to it? I've never heard of it.

Truthfully... I just don't know... :P
Anyway thanks for all your efforts, but unfortunately my lawful evil drow ninja/assasin died and went to the fugue plane from which she was transferred to the ethereal plane of shadow, where Shar resides.
I decided I needed some change... so I made an Aasimar paladin/champion of torm. Yeah... I know it's a bit korny, but hey, this is D&D, so what isn't?
:D :D :D

BTW: I don't understand why people get pleasure when their evil villain/tyrants are killed in the hands of the good. Everytime I've played an evil character, I've gotten much more fun out of torturing, blackmailing and conquering lands of the infidels than the usual dungeon crawling and indepth storytelling in good campaign. Sure they have their own kicks, but truth be told I'm getting a preeetty tired of the nature of D&D.
Evil prevails! :coolcthul :coolcthul :coolcthul

She was a renegade, surface drow. Abandoning the old ways she wanted vengeance while deep down yearning for acceptance. In her twisted and tempered mind the only way to do that was to conquer the sword coast and let the forces of the Underdark roam the realms, eventually destroying the main target, Evermeet. Of course my character fell, in the hands of a construct...
Well what can I say, life's a ***** (I am referring to a female dog here!!!) - and then you die :P

Oh yeah... and what if nobody actually knows you are a drow?
Just use disguise and items like undetectable alignement and hat of disguise. :P

Yup, it came out with the other splat books of 3.0 stuff in May of 2002. It is out of print since it was 3.0, and probably most of your FLGS's won't have it in stock anymore, but you could probably find it being sold on E-bay or something.

The title is
