I've once heard of the following way to distinguish Greyhawk from Dragonlance:

Dragonlance is about who the characters are. (When you think of Dragonlance, you think of individuals such as Raistlin, Tanis, Sturm, etc.)

Greyhawk is about what the characters do. (When you think of Greyhawk, you think of adventures such as Against the Giants, The Temple of Elemental Evil, etc.)

Would you say that there's a similar way of summing up the Realms? If so, how would you desribe it?

EDIT: I understand that this is simplied, but I'm just looking for what people think to be a quick way of summing of the flavor of the Realms.

The Realms are about who the Characters know.

There are hundreds of covert groups in the Realms, some allied, some enemies, and which ones the characters interact with determines which others they must look out for.

That says it well, IMO. I've always enjoyed the Realms for having so many cultures and organisations that the PCs can get to know and interact with. The world didn't come into being just for the PCs.

Ah, so when you think of the Realms, you think of the organizations such as the Harpers, the Zhentarim, etc?

And the hundreds of others, yes.

That's not a bad start.

In a way, it's a combination of DL and GH - the organizations are all about what the characters are, and what they do based off of who they are.
