| Alon D'ar11-30-05, 11:07 AM | I'm going to be playing in a game soon and my character concept involvs me using a gun. Basically what I am doing is playing a middle aged Elven Fighter/Wizard with a bum leg. He really plays on the concept he's a feeble old man and dosen't want to be hurt but he's full of suprises. I want to port the Parthian Rapier from Ravenloft as my weapon of choice. So the idea is this simple looking cane is actually a sword with a pistol attached to it. Anyway the problem I'm faced with is my DM says he's not sure that there's that level of technology in Faerun. Is there anywhere I can either find info on a gun in Faerun or technology more advanced as a gun to try to justify me being able to fnd and use such a weapon? |

Smokepowder can be found in Magic of Faerun and the info for guns is in the DMG's. Smokepowder weapons were introduced to the setting at the beginning of 2e in FR Adventures. So, yes FR has tech and I, for one, see no reason why your DM wouldn't allow it. :) |

Perhaps the weapon was left to him by someone else along with the formula for creating ammunition. You could have spent the last few decades perfecting the process necessary to create the ammo. Your DM can keep firearms limited and use your knowledge of gunpowder/ammo making as a plot hook. It could be fun having to find supplies (not to mention a place) to CRAFT your own ammunition. P.S: You could always go Outlaw Star style and make the gun a "caster". As a fighter/wizard it would work. |

They have Wheel-lock Pistols (though said to be from the Stars, i.e. Spelljammer) which are called Starwheels. Pretty much Any Muzzle-loading Gun can be had. As far as Breech-loading Guns go, not sure about those though. |
| Alon D'ar12-01-05, 12:43 AM | Thanks for the help. It's not so much I'm not allowed to do this because my DM is against it he just isn't sure if such things would exist. My argument is guns have to appear from somewhere and since an alchemy skill does exist someone should have come across gunpowder. Not to bad mouth spellcasters but if such research has gone into the crazy spells that exist I'm sure there's a group out there that discovered gunpowder. |

Well it's arguing schematics but smokepowder isn't the same as gunpowder. One is magical and the other isn't plus gunpowder doesn't work in FR as the 1e and 2e material tells us. :) |
