I have the old Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas running on my computer. There are a number of continents labeled "Terra Incognita" Let me identify them:

Terra Incognita, North: Directly across the Trackless Sea from Faerun is an unknown continent north of Maztica. For lack of a better name I'll for now call this continent Terra Incognita, North. What do you suppose is here? Something like the North American Indians. Is somebody going to get around to exploring this continent. It seems only a matter of time before somebody from Sword Coast or the Moonshaes discovers this continent, and then what happens.

Terra Incognita, South: South of Maztica is a continent that I choose to calle Terra Incognita South. Same deal I suppose there is something like South American Indians here. Also unlike South America, it is an Island Continent, its a good place for a Lost World Setting. There could be dinosaurs here.

Terra Incognita, East: Another major unknown continent looms east of Kara Tur in the Celestial Sea, this is a Super-Australia sort of continent, which looks sort of about the size of Australia and Antartica put together. It will be a while before westerners discover this continent. This is also another possible Lost World Location, it is so remote from everything else in the Known World.

So what do you think about an Exploration campaign? Perhaps their ought to be a sourcebook called "Terra Incognita" to describe these unknown places, and also explore what happens if some PCs were to explore them. These could easily be the site of several adventure. What do you think?

An exploration campaign sounds great but you'll probably have to make the worlds yourself. WOTC will never make a source book about thouse lands because they think 3E Maztica and Kara-Tur books wouldn't sell. :censored: :banghead:
So, the unknown lands (thats what Terra Incognita means) can be what ever you want them to and absolutely no one will argue with you.

The continent above Maztica is called Anchorome I believe. Not much is known of it. I think couatls are known to live there.

The continent/island below Maztica may be the land where the Tabaxi of Chult originated from. It has been suggested that that Southern continent might be a good place to set an African themed fantasy campaign, along the lines of Nyambe.

If you google these topics you might find some home-brew information on the net about what people have placed in these distant lands. If I remember right someone had set an India-themed campaign in one of these areas.

One idea that struck me would be to make Terra Incognita, East to be a land of Giants. Perhaps an entire Nation composed of Cloud Giants, along the lines perhaps of Jonathan Swift's Bropindag in "Gulliver's Travels". It is far away from everything else, so just about anything could be there.

Most fantasy worlds don't contain giants organized as nations. This land of giants would be quite insular, they are not very skilled in the ways of the sea. Since these Cloud Giants don't live in clouds, they don't have the magical abilities spoken of in the Monster Manual. Very few have ever seen a human before. The continent would also have some giant sized creatures, flora and fauna to make any explorer PCs seem small in comparison.

And what about the "Native American" types, do they coexist with the "Africans"? Anyway, what about other races who aren't human? Elves for instance, after all "Africans" and "Native Americans" are simply other types of humans. I think it would be interesting to have an entire continent dominated by a non-human race. Were talking about a tropical continent.

How about Lizardfolk?

I have another idea, how about Drow? Not your underground variety of Drow mind you, but their surface dwelling cousins. Basically the Drow discovered this continent and took it over, they left the Underdark behind, but they remained Drow, they also adopted another diety besides Lloth. These surface drow are adapted to sunlight, but their main activity cycle is nocturnal, they are still a matriarchal society where the women are larger and physically stronger than the men. These drow are hunter/gatherers, and their hunting is not restricted to animals either, they also hunt intelligent creatures and humanoids, they hunt humans, lizardfolk, you name it. Sometimes the drow even manage their game species. There are villages of captured humans living here, basically they go about their business until the drow decide that they have grown too numerous and so cull their numbers without completely wiping them out. Sometimes they overdo it, and so have to capture some more humans from other lands.

I was actually working on a story where the local gods of Krynn and Greyhawk impose their homeworlds onto Toril. That Super-Australian continent will become Ansalon and I was thinking of putting the Oerth peninsula on the Terra Incognita North continent just across the sea from the Savage North. I'm already porting Ravenloft into the Dalelands. That way my players can literally come from any setting they want. Imagine a Knight of the Rose questing with Mordenkainen in a Ravenloft town that used to be Shadowdale. Any comments?

Well, some fans from all worlds would screech and tear you to pieces upon hearing this, but it is your Toril/Krynn/Oerth/Ravenloft, so do what you want. :)

Here is an interesting link to a webpage that speculates what might be found on the continent of Anchorome to the north of Maztica, it even has a neat map:

Here is another link to another website that has several ideas for what to do with those unexplored continents:

I like this idea very much! Giants do indeed get the short shrift ( ;) ) when it comes to organized nations. Hmmm, perhaps at some point my current campaign can get sucked through a portal to such a land.
