No I dont have it but no doubt people will start getting it any day now and this is the place to tell us where you got it and maybe answer a few questions from those of us who are still waiting :weep:

The local hobby shop is telling me the same thing that Wizards is "Sometime this month". I trust the guys so I don't think that they have any more information than this. So, I've been into the shop everyday since March 1st waiting for it (i live within walking distance so it's not like I have absolutely no life...just very close). They told me today that they get their Wizards shipments in on Tuesdays so now I only have to go in on Tuesdays...oh well the wait continues!

Well WotC still says Friday the 12th of March, BUT!!!!!!

No distributor I can find has it, or gaming store, so it should be interesting.

Just got a email from Amazon.co.uk.
They said they have talked to Wizards and they told them Players Guide to Faerun was delayed. (and therefore sending me Epic Level Hanbook and Unapproachable East as one, and waiting with PgtF)

Dragonworld, a German FLGS which also sells a lot online said it would be shipped on 12th.

And indeed I got an E-Mail this morning which told me that my PGtF just went to the post office, so I can expect it tomorrow. :D

I went to my FLGS today and this is what I found out: it was supposed to be released today, but got pushed back one week. So it should actually be released Friday the 19th, one week from today.

The reason for this was some kind of mixup regarding people releasing books before their street dates, or something along those lines. The guy I talked to wasn't really sure.

Rich usually doesn't post over the weekends, and the campaign where the following information would be relevant begins this Sunday. I've asked him the same thing, but you'll probably be able to get me a response more quickly.

In 3rd edition the 4th level domain spell for the hatred domain was emotion (Hatred only). Seeing as how that spell no longer exists I expect it to be mentioned in the Player's Guide as to what is meant to replace it. If you could provide that information I'd highly appreciate it.

If I get it today I will.

Currently I can only read how more and more guys on the German boards tell that they received their PGtF, while I am still waiting. :(

Well, I can hope until 14:30 (currently we have 14:00 here in Germany), since that is the time until the Post usually delivers the packets.

If I don't get it by 14:30 I will have to wait until Monday. :banghead:

So wish me luck.

Anyway, here's the first impression of Zechi, from the German boards, who got his PGtF yesterday: Chapter 1: Regions&Feats
No longer take regional feats of foreign regions by gaining knowledge
Regional feats became better
can only take 1 regional feat and only at first level
Chapter 2: PrCs
All seem well made and all seem balanced
Chapter 3: Domains&Spells
Spells associated with a certain deity aren't avaible to all clerics anymore
Even clerics of the deity to which the spells belong only get the spells after taking a Initiate of [...] feat
Chapter 4: Magic Items
He said that this chapter did disappoint him the most
Chapter 5: Epic Levels
A little bit disappointing too
Epic feats there seem balanced
Arcanist PrC the wet dream of every arcane caster
Epic Spells not really impressive
Chapter 6: The Planes
For him the best chapter of all
Chapter 7: Campaign Journal
Updates FRCS timline until Kythorn 1373
Appendix: Expanded Play
Psionics, Vile and Exhalted
PrCs and info about some Archfiends and Paragons
Rules to play races with LA at first level

It seems I won't get mine today :nonono:

I'm impressed how many people ordered the Players Guide form Dragonworld as well :D

My first impression of the book is, that it looks quite useful. The regional feats are more powerful than their original version and so it's really worth to choose one at 1st level. There are detailed lists for each race-group, which makes it easier to find a region where your character class is favoured.
So far I had no detailed look on the Prestigeclasses, but the Morninglord of Lathander seems to be quite nice.
I especially like the Spelllist in chapter 5 due to the fact it includes all spells of Faerūn of all published 3E and 3.5 accessorys.
The chapter about magic items is quite short but looks ok. Fortunately they did not convert all items form MoF.
But let's come to the Epic levels ;)
The Netherese Arcanist specialises in two fields, which include several seeds. he gains (Greater) Spell Focus (Epic) and becomes more resistant to backlashes and has to spend less money to develope spells. I do not own the Epic Level Handbook and therefore I connot judge how good or bad this class might be. I could imagine that Prince Telamont might be an Arcanist himself and I suppose I'll give Larloch some levels in this class as well. Unfortunately the spell "Karsus Avatar" is missing in this chapter and the Spellcraft DC of the other spells ranges from 39 to 280.
The Chapter about the planes is ok but includes to many facts about the planar traits and inhabitans. But all in all it's more detailed than the version in the FRCS.
So and now I'll continue reading ;)

Daeinar:

Can you post the prerreq. and a general view of the Netherese Arcanist Epic Prc?

Thanks in advance
Daeinar

03-14-04, 08:07 AM
The cosmolgy section is great for sure.

A lot of information, detailed writeups for each plane, including traits in MotP-style, information on all inhabitants (from petitioners to the gods themselves). Nifty: Each already existing monsterbook (mm2, fiend folio, draconomicon) is mentioned if certain monster from those sources inhabit the place.

The illustration of the World Tree and the River of Blood also do a good job explaining how everything is set up.

The section on archfiends sucks. It is basically, taking into account ALL of the information in the book, perhaps 1/2 page short. Mostly refers to the book where the fiends were introduced originally.

The Netherese Arcanist

KL (arcana) and Spellcraft 25 ranks each
two feats
ability to cast 13th level spells
a roleplaying requirement

Gains a bit more punch in regard to Save DCs, but most importantly, researching spells is way cheaper for him (once he reaches a certain level).
Foolosophy

03-14-04, 08:23 AM
here is a pretty rough translation of what daeinar wrote in his chapter about the cosmology:

Those thinking only about Faerun when hearing "Forgotten Realms" couldn't be more off, because Toril consists of many different planes in addition to the material plane.
These planes are inhabited by gods and demons alike and even most player characters can be sure to visit them at least once sooner or later, be it as a messenger of their gods or as part of a journey into the depths of abyss to excavate some powerful artefact

Sadly the informations (on the planes) in the campaign setting
were not only scarce, but virtually non-existant. The Player's Guide is now finally attempting to fill this gap and - so much can I tell you - it does the job pretty well in 28 pages. Not only is the sketch of the cosmology more meaningful than in the FRCS, but they finally included a writeup of each plane in that cosmology - and these are not meager at all.

Apart from game mechanics concerning the different traits of each plane one can also find notes on its inhabitants, ranging from the usual monsters to petitioners and the gods themselves
(pleasantly each source book relevant to a plane is referenced here, including the Fiend Folio, Monster Manual 2 and Draconomicon )

Of course one could certainly write a whole book about the planes, but the mere 28 pages in the PGTF deal with this topic in very detailed and helpful way, thus making the cosmology section the 2nd real highlight of this book.

==========

my excuses to the author and all readers for any inapropriate translations or other mistakes I might have made

@Cunning Linguist
I have not seen any detail about Mythallars in the PGtF. Hope WotC will someday publish an accessory concerning the old fallen empires. The spell you mentioned is in the PG and has a Spellcraft DC of 280.

@Hygric
The Ethran Feat grants a boni of +2 on two and all charisma-based skills when dealing with other Rashemi. I don't know how far I'm allowed to go into detail due to the CoC.
The Hathran Class now lists a region entry, the spellcasting requirement was doubled and you have to be female. There are a few other restrictions like the forbiddance to learn Item creation Feats. The Class Feature list on the other hand was completely changed. She is now stronger tied to the spirits of Rashemen, uses circle Magic and gains an ability, which grants her a certain authority for other people from Rashemen.
The Incantatrix does no longer have to have ranks in Knowledge (Planes) but mustn't have Abkuration as a prohibited school. It also seems that the class is now more focused on Metamagic itself than on fighting extraplanar creatures. The Send Away ability was deleted for instance.

13th level spells!
That means no spellcaster can qualify till at LEAST 26th level, and thats not including the other two feats so mostly likely no one could qualify till around level 29! Jeez those requirements are killer, I had a Netherese NPC I was gonna throw at some players guess that idea is gone.

Exalted class. Full spellcasting progression, cleric bab, good ref saves, smite eviel, favored enemy (some viel organizations to choose from). Harper Knowledge. That's basically it.

Quote from the Ask Rich baker thread

"The only web enhancement I know of is the monster conversion appendix.

Other stuff that was cut out of the Player's Guide included a race chapter, the monster chapter, a couple of prestige classes, and some Vile Darkness-like content (FR-specific fiend lords and elder evils).

The race chapter probably won't come to light, because on examining it again, we realized that it was really pretty redundant with the FRCS and Races of Faerun. The monster chapter will be included in its entirety in an early 2005 product.
At least one of the prestige classes (the Master Transmogrifist) found its way into a 3rd trimester core D&D product, which I can't quite talk about yet. The fiend lords (including Bazim-Gorag) will make it into a mid-2005 FR product."

the reason why:

A towering edifice of adamantine, obsidian, ebony, and jet, it seems to suck out what little light there is out of the sky, casting a pall over the land all around it. Bane rules over his realm as an iron-fisted tyrant, seated on his throne of skulls. Nevertheless, soldiers from accross the planes, particulary devils, flock to serve under his despotic rule. The purpose of these soldiers is not quite clear, although since Bane has tried before to ursurp supreme power, his plans can be easily surmised. Bane is, after all, a god of strife, so he can hardly be expected to gain any satisfaction from simply watching terrestrial conflict.

The Nine Hells encompasses no divine realms and no deities make their home here. However, each layer is ruled by an archdevil, and a few of these creatures certainly rival minor deities in power.

One of the strangest things in the PGtF is table A-10 on page 189. Part of the PGtF section about Vile things in the Realms, it has Vile domains for FR deities and included among the true deities are Demonlords and Archdevils. The PGtF offers no explanation how and why they are able to grant divine spells.

Yes: "The native inhabitants of the Blood Rift are yugoloths. All varieties described in MotP, MM2, and FF are represented here. [...] Blood Rift has no divine realms, and no deities make their homes here"

No "Arch-Yugoloth" appears on the above mentioned table A-10

Well, WotC Europe's Headquarter (yes, they have one) is based in Belgium, near Brussels (Yeah! My country!! ;-). That's incidently also where they print all/most (not sure) of their Magic playing cards.

So (wild guess) maybe they're also doing the printing of some of the books there. So it may also be available in Belgium or in the Netherlands. I don't know...

Second wild guess: the first German on-line shop to ship PGtF is based in Hamburg, others don't ship it yet. Since Hamburg is THE harbour of Germany, that's more than probably where a boat with a huge cargo of PGtF would arrive from the States... And maybe the people of Dragonworld just launched an attack on the boat to steal one of these containers! After all, they're gamers like us and the waiting was also unbearable for them... ;-)

Well, as you see, I really don't know and I am just excited by the fact that the PGtF should land in my post box TODAY! :D At least, that's a fair expectation considering that I got a phone confirmation from Dragonworld that the posting has been done yesterday mid-day.

Did the Hathran get any new spells? Do they still get their own spell list? If so, what are the spells considered since they used to be arcane? Now that a Hathran can be either Divine or an Arcane caster, does the spells become whatever type of caster that the Hathan is?

WotC usually releases to gaming stores first, because gaming stores are an important part of their business model. Bookstores would then receive it sometime a week later or so.

Some companies are quite strict about this kind of thing. If the seller is told not to sell an item before a particular time, and they get caught ignoring that, they could, at the least, lose their right to carry that material. If they've signed some sort of agreement, then it is possible they could even get sued.

So this situation may be annoying, but I'd let it slide. After all, do you think that *any* seller is going to not make a sale he wants to make, if he has the chance to do so?

I got a question about the Initates for the various gods. So all you have to do is take a feat to get the special spells? Do you have to be a cleric to take it? Is there requirements for them?

For example if I choose Mystra, can I add these spells to my known spells if I am a Mystra worshipping sorcerer?

Thanks for any info!

You have to be a cleric of a certain level to select an inniate feat. Several Feats are also avaible forother divine spellcasters. Arcane Spellcaster seem not to be allowed to select an Inniate Feat. The Feats not only grant you access to new spells, but also give you a nice little power like casting spells in an Antomagic Field under given circumstances ;)

And the owner KNOWS that he's gonna make that sale on the 19th. The customer may be annoyed but it's a company policy. I recall Lucasfilm doing the same for Episode I toys. You couldn't buy them before midnight on the day they went on sale or else you lost the right to carry any future toys or other merchandise from them.

No, not really. They are the same spells which where already shown and avaible for all clerics in Magic of Faerun, e.G. Skulls of Secrect for clerics of Cyric and Battletide for clerics of Bane.

But taking an Initiate feat not only gives access to these spells, but also grant a special pwer (Initiate of Bane lets you invoke a fear effect while Initiate of Cyric makes you immune to all fear :P )

I must confess that I could easily see it as applying to all spells cast on self rather than only personal ones and stick with +4 as well.

There are only three spells that are too good with it, maybe five under some circumstances.

The first 3 would be Divine Favor, Divine Power, Righteous Might and the last two Blink and Displacement (if you allowed spells cast on self).

Really, the problem lies with certain spells that are too strong as it is - not in the feat itself.

Add Shield of Faith, Protection from ..., Shield to the list. DF & DP are the only good clerical spells that helps in case the cleric actually wants to be something different than the healing tank who runs past any fallen or injured fighter or mage. As it is now, only first level spells have any chance of ever been taken with that feat, since you nee 7th (as in SEVENTH) level slots for them. Any sane spellcaster who wants spells ready at hand takes Quicken Spell now. But I guess that is off topic, so sorry to rant about.

Not at all, these spells all add bonuses that are either easily available and thus doesn't stack or are cheap as items.

Everyone ends up with a Cloak of Resistence and a Ring of Protection eventually, these spells aren't orth the effort to persist.

Now, a +6 luck bonus to hit and damage, up to 5 more actual BAB or an additional 8 Strength that's stackable coupled with some natural armor, a size increase and damage reduction can't easily be gotten by other means.

In my original post I didn't consider that the Ring of Blinking is there as a good alternative but the 3.5 Cloak of Displacement isn't close to being as good as a Persistant Displacement would be, if possible.

I disagree, and could probably go on for any amount of pages to prove how broken the Cleric class is.

However, that would be both OT and hijacking so I won't, for now. :)

Agreed, save Divine Favor the feat is rather pointless now.

However, we have a small number of abusable spells to blame for this and it galls me that they chose to nerf the feat instead of the spells as this doesn't really fix anything.

Flipping through the Player's Guide I came across the Baneblades of Demron (Magic Weapons section) and I've got to say I'm impressed. I very much like the extra little bit of lore you get with the weapons and they're all impressive in battle as well.

If my players ever get up the courage to invade Myth Drannor they may just stumble over one, along with some bitter outsiders in hiding that would love to get a bit of vengeance on dangerous maruading adventuring bands and their biting magic and blades, of course.

When they changed persistent spell, they at least changed the range of spells you can make persistent right?

I.E. no more 'personal' or 'fixed' range spells?

I got my copy last Friday. I went to my local shop but I didn't see it on the shelves; so I decided to just buy an archfiends miniature pack, and while I was at it I asked one of the employees when they were going to receive the PGtF; and he said: "We just got it today, you want a copy?", and he unpacked them immediately to sell me a copy.
It was cool indeed.

I think the book is really good (even if there are some obvious mistakes in it, like some of the legends in the art, the picture of the gray dwarf has gold dwarf under it, etc). The regional feats improved a lot, and the incorporation of vile thematics looks cool also..., well, I have to finish reading it, and immediately afterwards I have to create a new character.

Casting in an antimagic field sounds pretty good. Are they balanced? (compared to everything else and to each other).

The authors state that since they have no place in Faerun's history, integrating them into a FR campaign can be difficult. They give 3 options for dealing with the Vasharans and Jerrens:

1) Incorporate them as is, placing them in remote regions, away from other cultures.

2) Merge them into existing cultures.

3) Ignore them completely.

The Initiate of Bane feat really spiced up my cleric of Bane. I'd say they are well balanced, none of them is TOO powerful...

My character got a frightful presence ability for his feat, and a number of spells that only Initiates of Bane can cast.

To top that off the new write up for the Hatred domain gave me some neat new spells, and the Touch of Hate which lets my character create evil minion beasts (Beast of Xvim [now Bane]).

I'm still curious about the Fate domain.

And the Repose domain as well, as I believe that too is a FR domain. Given that it was meant as a substitute of the Death domain for deities that aren't evil, I'm curious to see if it still has deathwatch as a 1st level domain spell.

Just a quick question:

How much reprinting was done and if you are a person who has not fully converted to 3.5 nor intend to and have most of the previous books is it useful?

I'd say at least 50% of it is reprinted matieral to update FR to 3.5. The new regional feat and starting eq chapter, the spell and prestige class chapter, etc.

Then the rest is updates to bring the year to 1373 by including novel and sourcebook info, as well as info for the new planes......

Throw in a couple of good thematic PrCs and new spells and you've got the full picture.

Although I would say that the regional Feats system is not really a reprint. The new regional Feats are much more powerful (pumped Feats really) and also you now have regions for all the races.

A moon-elf from the North does not get the same regional Feats and bonus equipment as a Cormanthyr Moon-Elf for example.

I really like the new regional Feats system, I must say...

Well fine, but even Rich said only about 45% of it is new material that has never been printed in any 3/3.5 book. :)

The regional system isn't a reprint? How'd you figure. It was in the FRCS and now it's updated.... Looks reprinted to me and parts of it are nice but parts of it kind of stinks. :) Some of those feats should be allowed beyond 1st level.

What don't you like about it, Kuje?

I agree, though, that some of those feats, at least, should be allowed past 1st level. As an example that really sticks out: Daylight Adaptation. I had assumed, when that feat was first published, that it was for creatures that took pains to expose themselves to sunlight for long periods in order to acclimatize themselves to it; not something you start out with. For a PC, in my campaign, I wouldn't allow that feat to be taken until he has gained at least three levels.

Mostly what you said above. But it also kind of stinks that you can't get them any longer with knowledge local, and that you can only ever get one and only at 1st level.

It doesn't really matter to me that much, since I didn't use the rules in the FRCS either and all PC's and NPC's in my game start with one free regional, if they are from Realmspace.

I noticed that idea on a thread a little while ago (I can find it for those interested, but I'm too lazy at the moment). Does anyone think that the free regional feat idea is no longer viable, now that the regional feats have been retooled to be more powerful?

With Races of Faerun and FRCS, I gave them away as a free feat at 1 level. (the there was a region match) I'd have to see the what my players take before doing this again.. Might do it if they want to have the "Forester" feat, but not "Luck of Heros"...

Only Fort is a good save instead of Fort and Reflex. The bonus feat you get at 2nd and 4th is from a limited list instead of being any fighter feat. Lay on hands points from Divine Champion can only be used to heal those with the same patron. Smite Infidel no longer can be 'stacked' with another smite ability - if you have another smite ability, you just get one more use of that ability (though I'm told this had been changed even before the PGtF came out).

The Purple Dragon is semi-legendary. Thaugmaglorus was an old wyrm black that ruled Cormyr way before it was Cormyr. Some people think that the Purple Dragon still exists to defend Cormyr, but no one is even sure if it actually exists.

For more, see the FRCS Cormyr entry and the Cormyr novel by Ed.
