This is a thread dedicated to Astanphaeus, a fellow Realms lover that hangs on our FR list. He came up with the following drawings in the "Dwarven druid illistration??" thread, and I'd like to share them with you, as well as renaming this thread properly to include other "non-Dwarven druid" pictures he might be inclined to draw for us.

Here are the drawings he came up with so far:

I posted this on the druid illustration thread, but I'll say it again here:

Jeez, Ast, that's major talent, and you seem to bang out the drawings rather quickly, too. I wish I had your abilities. I've wanted to illustrate my players and NPCs for years, but I haven't found anyone to do it for me. I used to draw, but that was when I was a young kid, and it didn't stick. I'd ask you to draw something for me, but I imagine your schedule is tied up as it is with requests. It would be so nice to have a group shot of my current group of players.

Good job. That dwarven druid hits the nail right on the head. Well done.

You're definitely gifted. The pictures are gorgeous. How long does it take you to do these?

I'll bet Crust is right about you having a bajillion requests, but on the off chance you're ever available and willing, I too have a character I'd like to see drawn.

Hehe, I think everyone does...

But ecspecially me!

I posted a request on the Art Gallery board for an illustration of my groups entire party of 4. If you get the chance Astanphaeus, you should check that post for details

Wow. What a nice thing to have greet you when you come to the board!

Thanks for the huge compliments, guys! You've made my day! :D

A few responses:

"How long does it take you to do these?"

Hard to say, because I tend to be sporadic in the execution... but I'd estimate 1 to 2 hours.

However, that can fluctuate dramatically. It all depends on how anxious the character is to get on the paper. For example, I assume Cyrros is a ham, because he didn't take long at all. ;)

It also depends on how clear the image is in my head. The dwarven barbarian took under 30 minutes, because my image of him was very vivid to begin with.

I used to draw, but that was when I was a young kid, and it didn't stick.

You have to keep doing it, or else your skills will atrophy. I can tell you that from experience.

When I was a teenager, I used to draw relentlessly. As I got older, I didn't do it as much, nor was the subject matter I depicted as diverse. When I went back and tried to draw some of the things I used to do effortlessly in my youth, I found that either I couldn't do it with the same alacrity and precision... or I couldn't do it at all. I'd look at some of my old work and say to myself, "how did I do that?"

You can get it back, though. You just have to keep at it.

Any recommended books or advice on the craft?

Always double check your magic circle, making sure it's not disturbed in any way, before summoning any...

...oh, you mean craft as in art. Sorry. ;)

Yeah. Keep at it. If you find you can't put something on paper, don't junk the idea. Instead, try using references (real life, magazines, whatever). Also try little thumbnail sketches first, before embarking on a piece. Start simple, and work your way up to the details.

Also remember that artists get blocks too, just like writers. Sometimes it just ain't gonna happen. If you find yourself stuck, take a break. Switch to another drawing, or just doodle, or do something else creative (writing, painting a miniature, working on a game, whatever flicks your switch), and then go back to the piece later.

Draw during campaign sessions. Especially if you're in a regularly scheduled game that's been going on for a while. Your brain has become conditioned to be into a certain creative/visualization mode when you're at that table, so take advantage of it (only draw game oriented stuff, though, or else your DM might get peeved ;)). If you're not in a game, or even if you are, set aside a specific chunk of time during the week for your artistry. Again, your mind will become accustomed to the routine and will start getting into gear for it before you even put the pencil to paper.

As for books, there's a lot of good books out there. But the thing is, we're all trying to create stuff mostly or completely from our imagination, so the application of many of them is limited. After all, it's not like you can call your gnome friend on the phone and schedule a quick modeling session. ;) Therefore, I'd recommend books that focus on how to draw comics or manga, because the situation is much the same there.

Finally, draw everything. Boats, apples, streets, buildings... everything.

Hope that helps.

"Are these pictures just shaded with an inkpen?"

They're just pencil sketches. However, I ran them through a couple of Photoshop filters to give them more of an inkwash feel... so that they'd look more "finished". The barbarian, for example, is a straight, unaltered sketch, and looks a little boring and flat to me because of it. I wanted Koindar and Cyrros to have a little more "pop".

Again, folks, thanks for the kudos. They're much appreciated. I'll post about requests in a minute.

Requests:

First of all, I like doing requests. They're a good exercise for me.

But there's only so much time in a day... or in a week. And I am a DM... which is already a timesuck, as you all know. ;)

So, by all means, make requests, but I may not get to them for a while (if at all).

I will point out that there are a lot of fine artists over here:

http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=391

They also take requests. So if I'm not responding all that quickly, post your character over there.

But if you specifically want me to do the request (for yourself and for this specific community) here are some guidelines:

1. The request should be FR specific or FR applicable. For example, I did a gunslinger for someone on the Art Gallery board... I wouldn't do that here. This is an FR board after all. ;)

2. I really don't much care for halflings. Doesn't mean I won't draw one... I just probably won't get that pumped about it... unless the concept is intriguing, which brings me to:

3. Character descriptions. Race and class are a must, but ability scores don't help me much (unless they're really high or really low). Height and weight are good, but so would be a build (slight, medium, or heavy frame). Hair colour isn't really applicable, but hair style would be helpful. Significant items, armor type, typical gear, distinguishing features, someone who the character happens to look like... all good.

But most important would be the personality and the underlying concept. Tell me what your character is like, and what the idea behind him or her is. "Ranger", for example, could mean a lot of things. Are you thinking Strider, Drizzt, or something completely different? Is the character cocksure, grim, flamboyant, reserved...? This is the type of stuff that'll pique my interest. :)

I think it'll also make it more fun for everyone else reading along. Who knows, your characters might end up being NPCs in other games. ;)

Astanphaeus,

If you do not draw for the FR design team, you should. I've put the name of the big boss in the title of this post in case he ends up clicking on this thread upon his return from GenCon (I'm assuming he's there now)

Thanks a lot for Cyrros... I'd feel like I'm overindulging if I ask for another drawing (but if I do - I know I won't be able to resist - don't bump my request ahead of anyone else here! ;) )

A million thanks! If I had the power to give you the green light to draw all future FR stuff, I would (a few FR books I've bought lately have left me indifferent to their art...)

Well, our group adventures in the Forgotten Realms, so I suppose this would be an all right request for here? I'd very much like you to draw a single image of our entire party, if you can.

The group consists of the following PCs:

Female human Fighter: Brown eyes and hair, 5' 11" tall, 167 lbs., she has hair cut to jaw length and it curls at the ends. She has a mole on the right of her mouth. She is pretty, but not overly beautiful. She wears scalemail, and a buckler. She wields her favored weapon, a masterwork warhammer.

Her story is as follows: Alethra was born and raised in the Cold North of Faerûn, in Damara. Her father was a powerful warrior and smith in the village where she grew up. She's tom-boyish and puts on the act of a grim stalwart armored soldier. She sees her feminine qualities as a weakness and tries to discourage anyone from investing a love interest in her.

Male human Wizard: Blond hair and green eyes, average male human height and weight, his hair is tied back in a ponytail and is shoulder length. He has elongated features due to long ago half-elven heritage. He wears white robes with platinum trim and the symbol of mystra embroidered into the center of the back. He wields a quarterstaff and his spellbook.

His story is as follows: (No name yet) was born in Aglarond where he showed great promise as a worker of the Art. He was discovered by a servant of the Simbil on his family farm and informed of a great oppurtunity. To travel to the capital and train as a Wizard. Since then he has devoted much time to Mystra whom he reveres much in the manner of a Priest, and has specialized in conjuration magics.

Male human Ranger: Dirty blond hair and teal eyes, 6'2", 179 lbs., he has messy short hair. He has a scar across his belly from a wolf mauling many years ago, and a tattoo of a wolf getting gutted on his right shoulder. He wears leather armor and wields a longbow, his favored weapon.

His story is as follows: Marlak is a huntsman who has lived his entire life in his family's stone walled cottage on the Belt in Battledale. He has developed a hatred for wolves and despite his normally reserved calm nature, he strikes at the animals with a terrible hunger. He reveres Silvanus on most occasions, but pays lip service to Malar and is completely absorbed in the hunt.

Male half-aquatic elf Bard: Dark hair and eyes, short of stature and thin, he has dark hair tinted green, and pale green skin tone. He wears leather armor and a long many-pocketed cloak. He prefers a dagger and his spells.

His story is as follows: (No name yet) trained in the reformed Bardic college in Silverymoon. His father dwells somewhere in the Dragonmere and may live still, where as his mother passed away from illness recently, sending him out into the world. He eventually found his way to the Dalelands where he became a junior member of the Harpers. Since then he has devoted himself to adventuring, and fighting the good fight.

Something was not quite pleasant about the racial drawings in the Unapproachable East... I didn't realize how not good they looked until I actually held the book in my hands. I almost felt like I had made a bad purchase for buying something with art like that in it.
Pystian

07-26-03, 02:28 AM
Well, since your being so kind...

The character I'm hoping you'll draw for me...

Name: Pystian
Races: Finhead Saurial (see below for some examples)
Weight: 167 (because of the tail)
Height: 5' 7"
Build: Medium, perhaps a little slender, though clearly fit
Applicable scores are probably Str 14, Con 13, Cha 19

Pystian is a swashbuckler. His dinosaurness prevents him from seeming quite as charming as the other swashbucklers out there, but he's a kind soul. If at all possible, I'd really like his picture to look "friendly" more than anything, but not "Court Jester" friendly. More like "the kind old man I go to play chess with in Central Square" kind of friendly. Pystian isn't old at all though, only 20.

Though a true romantic at heart, Pystian keeps a somewhat stoic air about him. At least until recently, as he has returned “home” to the Lost Vale.

Pystian dresses well, but not lavishly. He wears a large white shirt (perhaps a little foppish, but not with all the ruffles), brown drawstring pants, and has rope for a belt. He has a Traveller's Cloak (It's from Magic of Faerun. It could easily just look like a forest green cloak) and occasionally wears eyeglasses (He traded in his Goggles of Night for Spectacles of Night). His rapier can look however. Like everything else I think of it as being well-made but not gawdy.

Here are some Saurial pictures that might help give you an idea of what he'd look like:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frx/20030528a

and

http://www.thinktankstudios.com/images/creatures/Finished/finhead_weaver.jpg

And my Avatar.

They're based off the Parasaurolophus, as far as I can tell. Heres a good picture, especially the one on top:
http://rocek.gli.cas.cz/Rekonstrukce/Parasaurolophus%20small.jpg

Even though the rest of him may seem somewhat animal-like, I'd really appreciate it if you could make sure his eyes look as human as possible.

I'm sorry if I sound really picky. It's not that every detail is that important to me, I'm just trying to help by giving you an idea.

Of course I understand completely if you never get to drawing Pystian, but thanks in advance if you do.

Edit: Perhaps I should have mentioned he has white, as opposed to green, scales. I didn't think it would matter since the pictures aren't in color anyway.

Heh, you know how guilty you feel asking someone already overwhelmed by requests... and yet you can't help requesting one yourself? I guess it is a natural human mix of greed, selfishness and curiosity. :D

Anyway...

Name: Sarelle Darksun
Race: Drow
Class: Wizard/Druid
Build: Slight, lithe
Height: 5'3''
Weight: 105 lbs approx
Hair: Long (right down back but no as far as bum) and BLACK (important)
General look: Sad, aloof, distant, dreamy, paranoid, elegant, graceful
Gender: Female
Gear/possessions: Bastard sword in one hand; off-hand free of weapon/shield; silver elven chain mail; small cat-eye shape amulet around neck; dark mage cloak; small black sun-shaped badge (drow house insignia).

If possible it would be wonderful if you could add a small black cat with intelligent eyes (her familiar) at her feet, and (very much optional) maybe even a smallish non-hairy spider on one shoulder.

Thank you very much, and take your time.

I posted back on the druid illustration one.

I didn't want to ask and be irritating but then I realized that you should take it as a compliment but anyways here's my character:

Fighter/Monk
Uses Rapier and Shortsword
Long black hair, black eyes
He's the pirate/swashbuckler type character so don't forget the near required bandanna!

As you have plenty of requests already, I'll not trouble you at this time but I'd just like to say your work is really good.
I used to draw a lot more but I actually got put off by doing GCSE Art, something about it, the structure or the teacher really put me off. I'd say I was competent but it normally takes me a long time to produce anything I'm happy with.

No need to bump the thread. When I have a character done, I'll find it. I won't forget, don't worry. ;)

My To Do List is as follows:

1. Trout's Bladesinger

2. Herr Doktor's Party of Four *

3. Pystian's swashbuckling sauriel (I love that)

4. Sarelle's wizard/druid drow

5. Desies' fighter/monk with required bandanna

* I'll give this a shot, but I'm probably going to stick to single characters afterwards.

Bazcasta: I like your Illuskan a lot, but I already did a character portrait for you... so I think it's only fair that I get to the other requests first.

On the other hand, my upcoming campaign is based in the Moonshaes... which means Northlanders... who are effectively Illuskan. If I draw something for that game that can be easily converted to fit your concept, I'll do so.

Note to everyone: I'll do these portraits as time allows. Time, for me, generally alternates between entirely booked and completely open. As a result, it may be a while between postings, but when they do come, they'll probably come in groups of two or three.

Right now I'm doing design work that's taking up the bulk of my attention, and I've a game coming online to boot that I'm preparing for... but I already have ideas for most of the listed concepts, so fear not. :)

Astanphaeus, I know you have a lot of requests, but if you could find time to do a portrait for me it would be much appreciated. Heres a brief description. You can take as much creative liberty as you like.

Keldrin Moonflower- Male Moon Elven Ranger/ Divine Champion/Tempest of Mielikki. He wears mithral chainmail and weilds an orcbane scimitar and a curved dagger. Red hair and holy symbol of Mielikki.

Thanks a bunch.

Well there's no way in the Abyss I can miss out on an artist of this caliber even considering doing a CP for me (obligatory sucking up :D ). If you find the time, could you do one for me?

Moon Elf Rogue, Silver Hair, Very cocky, No Armour but an Amulet of Nat Armour +3, Med build, 5'5", Rapier +2, Lives to Pick Locks.

Your work rocks, you should put up a site with some of it on it. (Sorry If anyone's already said that)

First off, I just want to say that I think your artwork is utterly amazing, Astanphaeus. Truly suberb work and has had me in awe since I first laid my eyes on it.

Secondly, I know that you've gotten a good number of requests, but I could not resist to get mine own in there. I currently DM a party of 4 adventurers who are basically champions of their particular gods and have been chosen to undertake a quest that may or may not be enough to save Faerun from complete chaos.

Soooo....here they are...I erred on the side of extra information, as I thought this might give you a better vision of the characters.

Arlemon, son of Erléant: Rog 7/Wiz 5, tressym familiar. Arlemon is a cocky son-of-a-b*tch, born into nobility and expects to be treated as such. He is, however, also prone to getting himself into more trouble than he can handle alone, despite his impressive agility and intelligence. He’s 21 years old, of medium build, roughly 6 feet tall and weighs 153 lbs. A Chondathan male from Cormyr, Arlemon has fair skin with short dark hair and eyes. He is most often adorned in well-tailored clothing, but he often needs to keep it mended. He also wears a pair of supple, black-dyed, lamb-hide leather gloves with two-toned (silver and gold) scale mesh wrists; Tymora’s holy symbol is fashioned on the back of the gloves). He arms himself with a rapier, and of course, his spellbook.

Mylar (some might add, “the Magnificent”): Clr 10 of Torm. Mylar is the embodiment of Torm’s portfolio, but he oftentimes takes his devotion to destroying evil a bit too far. He is driven by his desire to see Bane and his worshippers removed from the face of Faerun; spilling blood is not something this holy man fears. His determination shows in his grizzled visage; yet, this is the part of the him you will least likely see, as Mylar’s helm is one solid piece of metal; this helmet is shaped like an ornate Viking helmet, complete with white-feathered wings on the sides, but it has no eyelets. The holy symbol of Torm, the closed gauntlet, is emblazoned on the forehead. Mylar is 25 years old, 6’2’’ and weighs 175 lbs; he might not be the thickest man to wear full Gothic Plate Mail (as seen in Diablo II), but his wisdom allows him to carry a heavy burden. Mylar wields a keen Greatsword, being the weapon of his deity.

Tyrandra: Pal 12 of Tyr, griffon mount. As mentioned above, Arlemon has a tendency to get into trouble, and in fact, he has been this way all of his life. Tyrandra, raised by the Church of Tyr, was entrusted at a young age with the duty of ensuring Arlemon’s well-being. She is a stunning beauty, but do not let her long blonde flowing locks and majestic blue eyes fool you; she is one hundred percent devoted to spreading justice throughout Aber-Toril and is not easily impressed by the (often frequent) attentions of men. Deep down, both she and Arlemon know that they will likely spend the rest of their days side-by-side, despite Arlemon’s protestations to the contrary. Tyrandra could be seen in the mold of Swedish super model, but one that wears full plate armor (with Tyr’s holy symbol stamped upon her left breastplate). She wields in one hand a long sword, and in the other carries a very peculiar shield. This shield is large, made of mithral, and is shaped like a Lady Justice with partially-opened wings holding Tyr’s holy symbol between her hands. It is at once delicate, but obviously sturdy enough to absorb blow after blow (imagine a blindfolded astral deva holding the holy symbol of Tyr, legs together, bare feet pointed down with wings partially spread, yet not actual size).

Praxus Talonborne: Sor 9/Arcane Devotee of Selûne 3, pseudodragon familiar. Praxus, the only non-human of this party, is an elf from Evereska with long blonde hair and a gaunt face. Very young for an elf, he let his impetuousness take hold of him when he disobeyed the orders of his parents to go study with the scribes of Candlekeep, instead opting for a life of adventure. He soon fell into company with the three above and the rest, they say, is history. Praxus, however, holds a secret that he doesn’t even fully understand. In what was thought to be a portal malfunction, Praxus disappeared into thin air, his companions left to think the worst. Yet, in fact, Praxus found himself face to face with what he can only imagine was the avatar of the god Selûne, who instilled in him a mission to uncover the secrets of her twin sister Shar and root out her evil. The once youthful and exuberant elf now shows the weariness of an age he has not yet reached. He dresses in a similar fashion to the clerics of the Moonmaiden, with one slight difference: he wears a diagonally cut, flowing purple silk cloak with silver lining and embroidery along the edges that has Selûne’s holy symbol as a clasp. Praxus carries a rapier and has an affinity for the fireball spell.

Thanks for the compliments, hoyagerv. :)

Much as I like your character descriptions, though, I'm limiting these to 1 character per portrait (Herr Doktor got grandfathered in, because he made his request a while ago).

You could request one of them for now. I might be able to do the others later.

It's quite alright Astanphaeus, I was just trying to press my luck :). Out of the four, I"d most like to see Tyrandra. Who wouldn't want to see a sexy babe carrying a cool shield?

Alright, about that map, you could email Wizards customer service adn ask where you could one, or ask for one. custserv@wizards.com

There is a large poster map of Faerun in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

I'm sure there are others out there, ask on the FR Geography for one, people there can find you some maps.

Hi Astanphaeus,

Upon seeing Cyrros, my most loyal player's jaw dropped in awe, and he looked at me with anime-style glassy eyes  and said, "Please, mighty DM, ask this gentleman if he would try his hand on my PC. I don't care if it takes a week, a month, a year. I would be the happiest guy alive."

So, here's his PC... I'll put him at the end of the current waiting list. Let me know if you think his PC will even be feasible (although I'm pretty sure you can draw anything...)

Race: Half-Gold Dragon, Half-Human (Chondathan descent - Cormyr)
Name: Erathen Irgan
Class: Paladin 5
Alignment: Lawful Good

Height: 6'2"
Weight: 225 lbs
Hair: Gold Scales
Skin: Gold Scales
Gender: Male

Wears: +1 Full Plate, covered with thick robes of the Lathanderite faith (also serves as cold weather gear as my campaign is currently in the winter)
Carries: +1 Mighty Smiting silver Longsword, Mighty [+5 STR Bonus] Composite Longbow given by the Wyvernspur noble family, +2 Large Steel Shield, Scriptures of Lathander (this would probably be in his backpack, but if you want to put him in a relaxed pose, this is what he would read)

Feats:
Mounted Combat
Power Attack
Ride-by Attack

Edit: not that it matters, but other party members include a Fire Genasi Cleric/Elemental Archon (Kossuth), Half-Elf Ranger (Grey Uthgardt totem), Cyrros (of course!), Human (Sembia) Cleric (Azuth), Human (Sembia) Ftr/Rog. They are currently in Semberholme fighting drow, while making their way back to Cormyr (however, hints that Erathen's long-lost mother (a female gold dragon) could have been seen in those woods a few months ago is testing his sense of duty... will he return to Cormyr immediately to complete his mission or will he take a detour to investigate, to the risk of jeopardizing the task at hand?)

First off, great work Astanphaeus, but then you've heard that before. :) (trying not to sound like too much of a fanboy)

Not usually one to jump on the bandwagon but if you got the time then i got a request too:

Male Half Celestial/Wood Elf (with wings) Wiz/Cleric of Corellon.
Well cut but functional boots and pants. No shirt (walks/flies around topless).
Has a compact rectangular magical quiver on right thigh (about thigh length and maybe 2-3 inches out from thigh in width) longsword in scabbard slung between wings. Don't worry about the bow as the longsword can become a bow on command (think modified Rod of Lordly Might without the almighty spell abilities or high enchantments).
Of course spellcasting is his forte as a Wiz/Cleric.
Other notable features include glowy eyes (half celestial) flowing hair and a Kiira (from MoF) in middle of forehead.

If you want anymore info I will gladly oblige.

Thanks in advance. With more to come later I'm sure.

~ A. Well, there is a PC conept I was working on:

Ketrel Admentarr, male half-drow warrior devotee of Red Knight and member of the Red Fellowship.

Ketrel's hair is pale and silvery, and his skin dusky. His eyes are bright and clear and seem ever marked with just the hint of a smile. His long hair is loosely tied back at the nape of his neck with a leather thong. He is not particularly tall, and is of medium stature for a half-drow.

He is almost always wearing his lacquered suit of bulky half-plate armor, except while sleeping, and it often disguises the thin frame that he carries from his half-drow heritage. The armor is marked with small engravings along the top of the breastplate the depict the knight lanceboard piece that is Red Knights symbol. He carries a full helm, but only wears it when going into battle.

He wields a heavy shield of fine steel and tempered longsword in battle, but is also proficient with the longbow he carries, and a number of back up weapons (shortsword, daggers, throwing axes, et cetera).

He also carries with him a travelling lanceboard made of fine slate and bone with a pouch full of pieces he has carved himself, including a large number of knight pieces for ceremonial prayers he performs from time to time. He carries a journal which he constantly records the outcomes and tactics used in battles in and works feverishly in his downtime to study and build upon.

If you have the time, I'd like a picture drawn. :}

This thread just got linked in from another FR thread. Almost 3 years old now...I don't suppose the artist is still lurking?

Here's an update, in case Astanphaeus is still around! Here's the status of drawing requests as it was when you last appeared on these boards. If you fancy drawing for us poor peons once again, this may prove useful to keep track of your "orders" or just help jog your inspiration switch! :) (bold identifies whose turn it is, following the outlined order of requests...)

1. Trout's Bladesinger and PDK's Sun Elf Wizard (DONE! )

2. Pystian's swashbuckling saurial

3. Sarelle's wizard/druid drow

4. Maskanodel's Male Moon Elven Ranger/ Divine Champion/Tempest of Mielikki

5. Monksflat's Moon Elf Rogue

6. Convulsus' Human Male Paladin of Helm

7. Hoyagerv's Tyrandra

8. DELETE: PDK player's Half-Dragon (Gold) Paladin of Lathander, and REPLACE by "PDK's Rock Gnome Bard/LyricThaumaturge/ShadowAdept/ShadowcraftMage with Shadow Magic feat..."

9. Bazcasta's Illuskan Cleric/Rogue

Cheers! :)

The artist in question is listed as "Retired." Does that mean he's pretty much gone?

Amazing art from him, though, if I do say so myself.
