| kedi08-26-03, 06:32 AM | What is the best FR game ever created? I vote for IWD2, everything is great, story, rp, anime, cool and cool |
| Darkmistress08-26-03, 07:07 AM | *deadpans* Anime? I didn't realize IWD2 borrows anything from Japanese animated cartoon. I'd say PS:T, but it's not set in FR. So BG2 gets the vote, followed by IWDI (plus HoW and ToL). I don't like IWD2 very much. |
| kedi08-26-03, 07:23 AM | you like BG? well, thats new:) have you ever played BGII; throne of bhaal? there was a place where you fight 50 monks lvl 30! well man, you can control the whole faerun with that army. And there was a place where there were billions of archers and swordmasters with a fire giant. unless, BGII and BG was good, but I hate throne of bhaal. :D |
| Ilbreth Shadowblade08-26-03, 07:35 AM | I liked BG1 and BG2 the most. It's true that BG:ToB was a little ( ) unrealistic, but it was fun to play also. |
| kedi08-26-03, 07:47 AM | WHAT ABOUT nwn? the worst game of the year! it was not frp, nor rpg. something different, |
| Darkmistress08-26-03, 08:10 AM | I typed BG2, not BG. ;) ToB is... well, not good. Ascension helps it quite a bit, though. As for NWN, if I were to tell you my opinion of it, most of my words will be censored. *laughs* |
| Gotrex08-26-03, 08:47 AM | BG2 i think NWN is good - it isnt on par with BG2 but still a good game |
| Darkmistress08-26-03, 09:10 AM | Oh, yes, good game indeed. This is what I think of it: - The henchman AI is about as intelligent as a block of brick. - The use of tilesets makes graphics indefinitely repetitive. Something's wrong when every cave looks the same, every city looks the same, and every dungeon looks the same. - The NWN official campaign - not SOU - is about as fun as force-feeding yourself a red-hot poker, and as original as eggs on toast. - The use of radial menu is a touch of creativity I could live without. What's wrong with a more normal, easily accessed interface? - The graphics, aside from being repetitive, is at least two years outdated. If you ask me, I'd say that Bioware just doesn't know how to deal with 3D game engine. No robe, no cloak, because they just can't build an engine that can deal with it. Well, golly gee wiz, will you look at Dungeon Siege (which has better graphics and, wait for it, runs more smoothly). I'd rather be enjoying mindless hack'n'slash in Diablo 2 than playing NWN official campaign that tries to be too much and fails at everything. And no, don't use "but it's multi-player focused!" or "but you can make your own modules!" excuse. If that were the case, the game would have been shipped as "Aurora Engine the Toolset; the official module is a sample of what the engine can do" not as "Neverwinter Nights" -- the name of the location where the official campaign's set. |
| Catulle08-26-03, 10:04 AM | I had the impression the name came at least in part from that of a much older game. Was I wrong? Edit: And some of the things people have done with the engine in their own modules are frankly beautiful. Regards, Barry |
| aghill08-26-03, 11:14 AM | Baldurs Gate 1. Why? well, bacause it was much different than the later games. BG1 has the great expanses of forgotten realms which the newer ones did not have. The newer games are all about doing the quest and maybe more action filled, but I don't really like that. In BG1 you'll use many hours traveling on the many maps, and seeing the fearun as a traveler would know it. Furthermore I like the plot, that you actually dont really know whats happening the first times you play it. |
| Crust08-26-03, 04:57 PM | I remember loving the Eye series (1 and 2 - didn't care for 3). This was before I knew what FR was, who Khelben was, and what Waterdeep was. Those games are nostalgic. I prefer BG1 and IWD1. Like someone already said, BG1 was a new idea, and it was fresh. It was addictive to me. BG2 was tedious and long. Jon Irenicus was annoying, and that whole Imoen angle drove me crazy. No matter how much I blew her off, she still came around! IWD was quick and easy, a nice romp through cool dungeons and a slew of monsters. I don't remember it being bogged down with an attempt at an in-depth plot. |
| Cunning Linguist08-26-03, 05:17 PM | I loved BG2 most of all. In the before time, long long ago, Menzoberranzan was also kinda cool, but I liked the Ravenloft and Dark Sun games more.. |
| stevetip08-26-03, 05:25 PM | Baldur's Gate is still one of my favorite games of ALL time. It was a very original concept that has aged well. BG2 was a very different game (at least in style), but was still fun. IWD was much more "hack and slash" (not telling you guys anything you don't know), but I liked it. The story, such as it is, is okay. Neverwinter Nights... I try and try to get that thing going, but I always stop WELL short of the end. One nice thing about BG and IWD is that I can run it on my laptop (which is not new) while I watch TV :) Lastly, Planescape: Torment is hands down the very best game I think I have ever played (again, not FR, but worth the plug anyway). If you have not played it, for whatever reason, pick it up. You won't be disappointed. |
| lordmaxwell08-26-03, 06:42 PM | Curse of the Azure Bonds or perhaps the original Pools of Radiance game. I devoured all the SSI titles, but these were the two best FR ones. (Overall I liked the Krynn series better, but Dark Queen of Krynn was totally over the top! And not in a good sense.) |
| Nightingale 708-26-03, 07:20 PM | BG2 all the way.The best I've played. It was the game that introduced me to D&D in general and FR in particular.I owe it that respect at the very least.(BG1 was a little hard for a novice RPer,and ToB was kinda farfetched.Only +4 Holy bastard sword?!What kind of crap is this?) |

There's just things which make it better then BGII in my opinion, although BGII is still great. Throne of Bhaal is a bit overpowered at times but a nice conclusion to the saga. I've not finished IWD yet and I've not played IWD II. Good straight forward hack and slash fun but not on par with the BG series. I had huge expectations for NWN. I'm not overly fond of the official campaign but I have no real complaints about the engine or graphics. There are some very good modules and I've had a lot of fun playing multiplayer. |

I played through Dark Queen back in 10th grade. I had a good group, but I remember this area where there were tons of vampires, and they would scoot up and drain my levels away like nothing. I reloaded a hundred times before I made it out of there unscathed. Then I remember using raise dead so much that my PCs' CON would be so bad that their hp would drop permanantly, making my PCs too weak. Then, those damned enchanted draconians would ruin my group in their death throes, with Sivaks errupting into meteor swarms, etc. It was insane. I made it to the Abyss, but the encounters there drove me crazy. I quit. |
| Ozar08-26-03, 10:45 PM | I'd like to second Darkmistress's confusion and ask for an explanation of the "anime" remark. |
| blank_image08-27-03, 02:15 AM | This is slightly off-topic, but what does everyone think of the new Forgotten Realms game being created by Stormfront? It's still too early to tell much, but it looks like it could be a very good game. Incase you haven't seen it yet, you can view the Forgotten Realms trailer here. http://www.gametrailers.com/vault-f.html |
| E'tii'stil Shadowsil08-27-03, 02:17 AM | Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Throne of Bhaal. Essentially they are one game. However, the best D&D RPG would have to be Planescape: Torment. |
| kedi08-27-03, 02:24 AM | I agree with the planescape; torment fans, the best rpg game ever, highly detailed and very beautifull... |
| rmilsop08-27-03, 04:59 AM | Speaking as someone who shelled out the cash for all teh Black Isle games, as well as NWN, I prefer BG2 out of the lot. Whilst IWD2 has 3ed rules, and more races, it lacks the drive and storyline that BG2 had. Also, it is way too streamlined - where in BG2 you coul be good or evil, and face the consequences of either, I tried being evil in IWD2 and got no alternative gameplay at all. BG2: ToB did seem a little too ovver the top, but hey, you are talking level 30+ characters (level 50 for me thanks to a handy patch I found). Monks that are immune to timestop, shapechanging dragons, whole armies of fire giants. It was a little ridiculous, but it all suited the idea - that you were nearing godhood, a demigod almost unrivalled in power save by other demigods. Although, even I thought it was a little ridiculous that I could kill a Great Blue Dragon in literally no time at all with only one character. |
| kedi08-27-03, 07:32 AM | but yer a demigod okay so yer impressive, but the story was awful, and I would like to battle bhaal himself, not some little chicken servant. And its times of troubles, but my spells never failed except when i wear armor?? :uh-huh: and you could play a priest? story is awfull |
| Darkmistress08-27-03, 07:57 AM | Originally posted by kedi and you could play a priest? You know, if you couldn't play a priest, you'll face a craptacular amount of berserk gamers screaming: "Why can't I play a cleric? WTF is wrong with Bioware/BIS?! Huh?! This game sucks so bad!" Besides, in BG1, you initially didn't know that you were a Bhaalspawn. If you're a truly faithful priest, I doubt you'd give up your religion just because you discover that you're one of Bhaal's many spare parts. Hell, you could just be humble or - gods forbid - sensible and don't aspire to godhood. Or you stay in your faith just in case you do become a god and will need favors later. Tons of RP explanations to make this credible. Won't argue that ToB wasn't godawful, though. Catulle said: Edit: And some of the things people have done with the engine in their own modules are frankly beautiful. Yes, but that's the point: it's fan-made stuff. Most of the fan-made mods I've played, I consider far superior to the official campaign (Elegia Eternum, Necromancer, Art of the Thanaturge, Dreamcatcher, to name but a few). I don't know. Is it too much to expect something decent out of a professional team of developers? From a game you paid the full price for? Rather than wait for the community of unpaid people to come up with something better? |
| kedi08-27-03, 08:03 AM | Won't argue that ToB wasn't godawful, though. I geuss we all agree with that, a friend of mine wrote a complaining mail at black isle about BGII ToB with many curses:roleyes: |

| Ilbreth Shadowblade08-27-03, 09:01 AM | "And its times of troubles, but my spells never failed except when i wear armor??" Now who said it was during the ToT? |
| kedi08-27-03, 10:07 AM | never read a book?? bhaal died in ToT before achiving godhood, again |
| Sarelle08-27-03, 01:49 PM | All time best: BG2 - it is a timeless classic with everything. I love it - probably because it offers so detailed and interesting a plot, with fascinating sub-plots everywhere. The NPC characters rule! Best single player strategy: IWD2 - the storyline is tedious and some of the gameplay is repetitive, but its graphics arn't terrible - and the use of 3E brightens the game up. It has the best combat possibilities. Best multiplayer strategy: NWN - it is fun and flexible, and just generally great. There are problems, yes, but I enjoy it as the mult-player role-play tool it is. Best hack'n'slash (single or multiplayer): I know it isn't D&D, but... Diablo 2. Great fun! And for so mindless a hack-and-slash the plot is quite fun. Plus the monsters are hilarious, interesting and imaginative. Who doesn't want to kill corpse-spitting demons and ice-prince fallen demonic angels in Hell? |

Who doesn't want to kill corpse-spitting demons and ice-prince fallen demonic angels in Hell? The plot's more solid than, say, Dungeon Siege, I'll grant you. But it still isn't much of a plot. Big bad devil wants to take over the world, big good hero runs around the world chasing it. How cliched can you get? |
| Pajmage08-29-03, 10:48 AM | but yer a demigod okay so yer impressive, but the story was awful, and I would like to battle bhaal himself, not some little chicken servant. And its times of troubles, but my spells never failed except when i wear armor?? and you could play a priest? 1) The game takes place 16-20 years AFTER Time of Troubles 2) You are NOT a Demi-god, you are a Bhaalspawn, a child of Bhaal granted a small portion of his divine Essence so that he may resurrect himself 3) Bhaal was dead as the Dodo when BG2 TOB took place. So how could you fight him considering his divine essence was spread amongst his children. 4) Amelyssan the Black wasnt some 'chicken servant', she basically the equivalent of his chosen only she didnt get all the Uber-powers, she was his high-priest, master assassin and the only person she trusted with the ritual to ressurect him. [EDIT: OK, so I just called the Lord of Murder a 'she'. Whoops.....] I loved all the BG series, it is my favourite game series ever but out of them all I like BG2 the best as it is HUUGE and has great plots entwined with the main storyline. |
| Moonfall08-31-03, 07:15 AM | I'd have to say it's a tie between BG1 and BG2 for me. BG1 introduced me to FR (and to D&D) and I loved the freedom the game gave you to go where you wanted and do what you wanted. BG2 lost that aspect, but was so rich in detail and plots, and with NPCs that felt more alive, that it equals BG. As for TOB, well, that was a bit weird, and felt grossly overpowered, but hey, it provided an end to the story that I enjoyed. After all, the chance to reject godhood doesn't come around all that often. ;) IWD1 never really grabbed me that much, it was a bit too hack and slash, and IWD2 seemed weirdly disjointed to me. Still, I completed both games and I'll probably play them again sometime. As for NWN.... The OC was a major disappointment, but I hardly play it. Fan modules are great, overall, and the SOU OC let Bioware redeem themselves (although it's still nowhere near BG1 or 2) So, best realms game, the Baldur's Gate series. Moonfall |
