03-06-06, 10:54 AM From the foreword to “The Dark Elf Trilogy – Collectors’ Edition” by R.A. Salvatore. (The following conversation is one of the first between Salvatore and Mary Kirchoff, former senior editor of TSR.Inc.)

„No, Bob“, she responded, words I seem to hear too often from editors. “You don’t understand. I’m going into a meeting right now to sell this proposal. I need a sidekick.”
“Now?” I, in my never-before-in-the-world-of-publishing naiveté, responded.
“Right now”, she answered, rather smugly.
And then it happened. I don’t know how. I don’t know why. I merely said, “A drow.”
There came a pause, followed by, in a slightly hesitant tone, “A dark elf?”
“Yeah”, I said, growing more confident as the character began to take more definite shape in my mind. “A drow ranger.”
The pause was longer this time. Then, in barely a whisper, the tremor of having to go and tell this one to the mucky-mucks evident in her tone, she said, “What’s his name?”
“Drizzt Do’Urden, of D’aermon N’achezbaernon, Ninth Houth of Menzoberranzan.”
“Oh.” Another pause. “Can you spell that?”
“Not a chance.”
“A drow ranger?”
“Yup.”
“Drizzit?” she asked.
“Drizzt”, I corrected, for the first of 7.3 million times.

The first novel of Drizzt Do’Urden was released 18 years ago in 1988. Since then, various talented artists have been painting a number of pictures featuring the famous dark elf, thus giving Drizzt a face. Now I would like to ask you to decide which painting best meets the vision in our mind. Which painting do we like most? Which is „the face of Drizzt“?

Each of you has got five votes he can cast freely. However, no picture may receive more than one vote from one and the same person, and all your five votes should be cast. Just use this thread to post your five favourite pictures. Every painting has a number attached to it you can indicate when casting your votes. Klicking on the link, you can see all the Drizzt images I chose. As there is such a vast amount of drizzt fanart on the internet, I restricted my choice to the official art only. Should there be an image I didn’t list I apologize for that.
I started this survey in a number of message boards (USA and Germany) and I hope for vivid participation :-) This poll ends on 03.31.2006

03-06-06, 11:28 AM While some of the art is nice most of it looks nothing like how I imagine Drizzt or any drow, they are meant to have skin looking like polished obsidian and be beautiful, lithe graceful and... short.

How come half those pics show drow with purple, tanned or even fair skin? And what with those old Drizzt pics where he has god-awful mutton chops and the gold tiarra thing, utter crap? Did the artist even read a description of him? Weird.

But if I had to pick one, it would be the third one. :)

03-06-06, 11:34 AM That is why it is referred to as "personal preference"...I like the style of the art. I am a wanna-be freelance artist as well. I enjoy the style of the art, I don't think many of them are incredibly accurate.
It is about what is aesthetically pleasing, nothing more and nothing less.

03-06-06, 11:40 AM My favorite Drizzt is one that doesn't make him look like an old, ugly human male....Thus I like the picture of him on the new covers for the Dark Elf Trilogy. He looks like an elf, not a fluffy haired old human man....

03-06-06, 09:28 PM 1, 34, 28, 24, 9. Although, to be fair, 1 and 9 are by the same artist.

I forget the name of the gentleman who did #34. He did the majority of the illustrations of Hall of Heroes (1E), and I just remember how much influence he had on my own artistic endeavors at the time. His pen and ink pieces in that book were just beautiful examples of D&D art.

Where Drizzt is concerned, I knew he didn't nail the physical portrayal of that character 100%, and I hadn't even read the books yet. On the other hand, though, he captured a bit of Drizzt's essence--that part of the Drow Ranger who, despite all of the adversity he's had to deal with, is just overjoyed to reunite with his friend, Guenhwyvar. :)

I really like the style of the newer Drizzt pics ,but I still think they need to go darker with the skin tone. Drow have black skin, not purple. even though 13 is not really a clear picture of him, I like the style of the scene, plus having Artemis in it ups the coolness factor like 5000% percent.

I am currently having a outfit made from these pictures to wear to my local reniacance(sp) fair here in Texas. I bought the swords and will soon have a outfit to match to fully make me the dark elf ranger we all love. I am even going to get violet contacts, black face paint, and have a small black panther figurine to carry with me :) fanboy yes lol

8 - The Lone Drow, looked so cool that I just had to start reading Drizzt (still haven't reached this one)

9 - The Two Swords, see #2

I can't stand the old human guy pictures, or the ones with the plate on his head. Number 31 can't possibly be Drizzt. Number 12 (Larry Elmore) is too Dragonlance. Number 26 is good, but doesn't feel right.

But Drizzt dosent have any rubbery oversized limbs or a lower jaw that sticks out ten feet in front of him?! :P

Yeah, a lot.

Anyway the "Legacy", "Starless Night" and "Siege of Darkness" covers are the worst Drizzt's portraits ever: that's not a young ranger, that's not a drow. It's an old wrinkled human pretending to be a dark elf and does not have fun with it ;)

Where does that stupid headpiece come from? I don't remember it being mentioned at all in The Dark Elf Trilogy, and it should if that's where he got it. He does look really old in a lot of them...

03-08-06, 01:37 PM I prefer all the newer looks of Drizzt, they make more sense and look more fantasy than all the old pictures (which mostly look like old men).

As for #31. I can see the eyes that might be Gwuen, but... I don't think that's a Drizzt picture. Those 'eyes' I think are more just background design. Where did the picture appear? I've seen it before, but always assumed it was Zaknafien maybe.

Drizzt maybe be really old by human standards, but he's still a young drow, so he's shouldn't look like a 45 year old human.

Where did the picture appear? I've seen it before, but always assumed it was Zaknafien maybe.It's from the cover of Dragon #279. It is Brom's interpretation of Drizzt. In the Dragon pic, you can see the outline of Guen's head.

Are you sure about the Siege of Darkness one? That's the one with Lolth on the cover... and he looks pretty young and Elf-like in that one (except for the hint of mutton chops ;) )...

All of them are EXACTLY as I pictured. Except for Regis. For some reason I always thought of him as that chibi Bilbo from the Hobbit video game. :P

Though I HATE it when Drizzt's scimitars are depicted as long and narrow.
The blades are clearly written as wide and short (sinbad scimitars) in (I think, though it may be another in the Legacy of the Drow Series) Siege of Darkness.

And I don't get where they get that weird headband from.

I think number 21 is the only one where he appears to be his actual age though his constant brooding manner could cause some wrinkles. :D

Unfortunately al lot of pictures show him from a distance, so I can really tell if I think it's Drizzt or some drow wearing his clothes. Therefor 8 and 2 are mostly because I like the picture in complete.

I hate most of the photo-realistic 80's-looking D&D "art" it's like that "Heavy Metal" magazine thats full of "hot" barbarian women dressed in nothing but serpents or dragons, the kind of crappy 'tat art' that Hells Angels like to have on their motorbikes gastank....

you have to realize that drizzts scimitars are also only about 3 to five pounds and yet the blades are about 3 feet long, you cannot do that with the traditional arabian scimitar that are depicted in many of the images and movies of sinbad. the closest style of scimitar you are going to comeby with the 3 foot blade and 3 to 5 pound specs are going to be either the nordic style which is more geometric with the tips that curve sharply up with a flat top or the turkish style of scimitar that is long and slender with a slight curve reminiscent of a saber. though i do think that most artists dont put enough of a curve into the blade but they are just paintings. the actual collectors edition Drizzt scimitars are atrocious at best. they are straight and not only that, they are made out of pressed steal. i nearly bought them at an auction a while back but i asked to hold them first and the blades wobbled in the grip. there is no true tang to them.......enough of that i vote for images 1,2,3,4, and 13 all by lockwood. and i still believe the brothers hildebrandt could truely do drizzt justice. they are solely responsible for the way we view tokiens world and they did a ton of Magic the Gathering cards, and to top it all off, they did the original Star Wars posters and the Empire Strikes Back video game art on the box for the NES. they friggin rock.

I at least think somewhat narrow scimitars fit for Drizzt a lot better, for his finesseful fighting style. But gotta agree with everyone else: Those pictures where he looks like an old man... just suck. For Drizzt pictures.
And my votes: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8. Especially 3 & 4 rule, and also big thumb-ups for the FRCS Drizzt picture (number one).

I chose the easiest, look for the one which in he looks YOUNG!!! Why do the authors seem to prefer drawing old man which ebony skin and long white hair and call them drawings of drizzt? Drizzt is a young drow for goodness sake.

Now that i got it out of my system, its time to reveal my answers, my answer is

number 2 isn't too bad, more like a ranger than the others, 13 and 15 too. Too bad i don't have any others, the other potrait all seem to fail my criteria

03-28-06, 01:35 AM Drizzt was supposed to be 60 years old in the drawings so my assumption has always been that the artist took that to mean 60 real life years. As to the not-so-black skin, I think the artist would lose a lot of detail in making the skin as black as it should be. In a very colourful picture the isn't room for a whole lot of contrast.

9: The Two Swords (I like the action, it's just cool.)
13: Starless Night (I like the whole monochromatic thing going, makes a nice and different effect. I haven't read the book in a while, that Entreri he's beating on?)
31: Brom (I'm a fan of this artist since Magic's Desolation Angel, It's a slightly different rendition but I think he does well.)
2-4: Dark Elf Trilogy (To pick one I guess I'll go with Homeland. I like these covers because it shows how much of a child he still is at that time in the story.)
29: Paths of Darkness (I like the whole standoff thing, same reason as the first).

Anyway the "Legacy", "Starless Night" and "Siege of Darkness" covers are the worst Drizzt's portraits ever: that's not a young ranger, that's not a drow. It's an old wrinkled human pretending to be a dark elf and does not have fun with it ;)

I can see the eyes that might be Gwuen, but... I don't think that's a Drizzt picture. Those 'eyes' I think are more just background design. Where did the picture appear? I've seen it before, but always assumed it was Zaknafien maybe.

In the Dragon pic, you can see the outline of Guen's head.

That's the one with Lolth on the cover... and he looks pretty young and Elf-like in that one (except for the hint of mutton chops ;) )...

For some reason I always thought of him as that chibi Bilbo from the Hobbit video game. :P Though I HATE it when Drizzt's scimitars are depicted as long and narrow. The blades are clearly written as wide and short (sinbad scimitars) in (I think, though it may be another in the Legacy of the Drow Series) Siege of Darkness. And I don't get where they get that weird headband from.

Unfortunately al lot of pictures show him from a distance, so I can really tell if I think it's Drizzt or some drow wearing his clothes. Therefor 8 and 2 are mostly because I like the picture in complete.

The jowls and the hair, not to mention the white skin (that drow dont have) and then theres Lollit..., I mean Cattie.... Who was the artist again, a perverted Helen Keller? I hate most of the photo-realistic 80's-looking D&D "art" it's like that "Heavy Metal" magazine thats full of "hot" barbarian women dressed in nothing but serpents or dragons, the kind of crappy 'tat art' that Hells Angels like to have on their motorbikes gastank....

And I don't get where they get that weird headband from. you have to realize that drizzts scimitars are also only about 3 to five pounds and yet the blades are about 3 feet long, you cannot do that with the traditional arabian scimitar that are depicted in many of the images and movies of sinbad. the closest style of scimitar you are going to comeby with the 3 foot blade and 3 to 5 pound specs are going to be either the nordic style which is more geometric with the tips that curve sharply up with a flat top or the turkish style of scimitar that is long and slender with a slight curve reminiscent of a saber. though i do think that most artists dont put enough of a curve into the blade but they are just paintings. the actual collectors edition Drizzt scimitars are atrocious at best. they are straight and not only that, they are made out of pressed steal. i nearly bought them at an auction a while back but i asked to hold them first and the blades wobbled in the grip. there is no true tang to them.......enough of that i vote for images 1,2,3,4, and 13 all by lockwood. and i still believe the brothers hildebrandt could truely do drizzt justice. they are solely responsible for the way we view tokiens world and they did a ton of Magic the Gathering cards, and to top it all off, they did the original Star Wars posters and the Empire Strikes Back video game art on the box for the NES. they friggin rock.

But gotta agree with everyone else: Those pictures where he looks like an old man... just suck. For Drizzt pictures. And my votes: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8. Especially 3 & 4 rule, and also big thumb-ups for the FRCS Drizzt picture (number one).

Why do the authors seem to prefer drawing old man which ebony skin and long white hair and call them drawings of drizzt? Drizzt is a young drow for goodness sake. breath out Now that i got it out of my system, its time to reveal my answers, my answer is number 2 isn't too bad, more like a ranger than the others, 13 and 15 too. Too bad i don't have any others, the other potrait all seem to fail my criteria

Myst_the_Moonscout 03-28-06, 01:35 AM	Drizzt was supposed to be 60 years old in the drawings so my assumption has always been that the artist took that to mean 60 real life years. As to the not-so-black skin, I think the artist would lose a lot of detail in making the skin as black as it should be. In a very colourful picture the isn't room for a whole lot of contrast. Choice Pics 9: The Two Swords (I like the action, it's just cool.) 13: Starless Night (I like the whole monochromatic thing going, makes a nice and different effect. I haven't read the book in a while, that Entreri he's beating on?) 31: Brom (I'm a fan of this artist since Magic's Desolation Angel, It's a slightly different rendition but I think he does well.) 2-4: Dark Elf Trilogy (To pick one I guess I'll go with Homeland. I like these covers because it shows how much of a child he still is at that time in the story.) 29: Paths of Darkness (I like the whole standoff thing, same reason as the first).
