Ok, some of ye may have read the "Dark Elves and the Movies!" thread. This is a spinoff of that thread. We had mentioned ideas for a FR based movie. This thread is a continuation of that. Feel free to suggest actors, sources, directors, musicians for the soundtrack, ect, and add your general support.

I really hope that they don't, the D&D movie was bad enough, I'd hate to see a FR movie turn out bad as well.
Though I guess the D&D movie did have a couple of good parts, didn't it?
Gotrex

07-26-03, 05:36 PM
no the D&D movie didnt have good parts :P

a FR movie would be cool

providing it had a big enough budget to actualy be a good film
Dungeon_Master

07-26-03, 05:39 PM
Ya, the D&D movie had good parts. The End.

Na, I liked Snails, and Jeremy Irons was pretty cool. That, and:

"What you need is a 200 hundred pound dwarven women, with a beard you can HANG ONTO!"

No, that's why I started this. Campaign for an FR movie that was better than the D&D movie. We suggested 3 basic ideas:

Baldur's Gate

make a movie of one of the novels

or make an entirely new story.

Actors?

Orlando Bloom
Johnny Depp
Laurence Fishburn
Jennifer Lopez
Angelina Jolie (I can see her as Jahiera)
Jeremy Irons
Adrian Brody

Thats just a few of them we came up with.

iv always said i think the avatar trilogy would make a great movie

but it would also require a very large budget to pull off (it would cost a ton to do the fight between bane and torm)

A few soundtrack ideas:

Our Lady Peace

Nickleback

Godsmack

And who could do a D&D movie without the game soundtrack classic: Metallica. :D

I would have to agree that if it is as lame as the D&D movie. I mean we didn't see nearly enough of that healthy lass from... well anyway. I think that the Realms could produce a good movie, at least a TV show. I hope that the LOTR trilogy and Peter Jackson have shown the world that fantasy movies don't have to be live action cartoons with poor effects and plot.

I think a FR movie would be cool, if it had a good budget and good directors and producers.

Let's see, cast...

I think Vin Diesel would make a great Red Wizard of Thay. Since he's bald and he's got a good "bad guy" look, they'd just need to put tatoos on him and robe him, and he could pass as a Red Wizard. He'd make a perfect RW bad guy. Plus I bet he'd jump at the chance to play an intellectual part, as opposed to his many brutish badasses (But there's nothing wrong with that  ).

I can't really think of someone right now who would be a good Drizzt Do'Urden.

Jennifer Garner is a good action chick. She could make a good Elf.
Jennifer Lopez (I may be wrong though) could make a decent Storm Silverhand. But I don't know if Storm's blond or brunette or auburn.
Tahl-Ali

07-26-03, 07:21 PM
Except for the fact that EVERYONE would complain about the casting, the effects, how the characters were done, and the necessary plot changes that would be required to transfer an existing story to film.
A good D&D movie, well directed with a whole lot more money, would be awesome. But were I WoTC I'd be a bit more then fearful of trying to do something in FR; think about the fan base you could really **** off by screwing something up. Must better to pick an unknown setting where you can't tarnish the public images of Storm, Elminster, blah blah blah.

Hey, that was just a suggestion from last thread. If you want a real "gods forbid", here's one: Avril.

I thought Vin Diesel could be Minsc, but he can't do humor. But, on the plus side, he plays D&D, so........... :D

Reese Witherspoon would be ok if she can do an accent besides the southern one she had in Sweet Home Alabama. Not to say thats bad, but it doesn't fit well for much in the FR besides farmers.

Orlando I suggested because:

A. He's cool.

B. He's supposed to be the new Leanardo (ok, my twistings of Dicaprios name would get me kicked off these boards), but in a good way. Not a pretty boy, but a cool actor who can play elves. Let's see Leanardo play an elf! :smirk:

Adrian Brody mainly because I watched The Pianist.

After seing Laurence Fishburne in the Matrix, it made me think: He looks ALOT like Sarevok...

Jon BonJovi could be cool as a cameo at some point, and Christopher Walken could play a villain. I also thought Eric Idle could play Jan from BG pretty well.

Supposing we lived in a fantasy world where these people would have anything to do with the Dungeons and Dragons License, I think a good selection might be:

Johnny Depp as a tattooed, wild-eyed sorcerer.
Brad Pitt would make a good Fighter/Rogue.
Anthony Hopkins as an old paladin or cleric.

Phillip Glass could do a sort of eerie, droning musical score.

It's really kind of a pipe dream though because nobody will ever take Dungeons and Dragons seriously enough to make anything worth-while out of it. The marketing fiasco that was TSR did everything in its power to ruin the image and marketability of the franchise, and most of the world (including Hollywood) is unaware of the Wizards/Hasbro take-over and subsequent improvements.

Of course, it's not like Hasbro is really interested in seeing anything good come of its holdings; they just want to turn a profit (for which I don't blame them).

The flaw in doing a FR movie is that if were bad than there would be a whole slew of super nerds such as ourselves out to kill the directors/producers in as brutal a way as possible. However they faced that same problem in doing the LOTR movies. So with a massive budget than a Icewind Dale movie would be badass! OF course we all remember the D&D movie fiasco! The first time I saw that all I kept thinking about is how not threatening Demedar is. Then I got mad about the 6 foot dwarf (that I think was supposed to be a Bruenar!). Then I was enfuriated by how terribly Ripley fought. The list goes on. But a movie well done like LOTR would be amazing.

By the way Orlando Bloom is an amazing choice for nearly any elven part! If Vin Diesel had anything to do with the movie I'd probably refuse to watch it (he's almost as bad an actor as Keanu Reeves!)

I think an CG-animated interactive FR movie should be done, just like Scourge of Worlds. I finally got my DVD this weekend and I love it, even though I've only seen one of the four endings so far after watching 3 times trying different things through the story.

Firstly, let me say that yes the D&D movie was not the masterpiece that LotR is, but I still liked it. I am actually thinking about a good sequel for the movie with the same actors for the most part. I think it could be redeemed.
As for a FR movie, there are so many trilogies to choose from. I don't think the Dark Elf trilogy would work, but the following trilogy would be a good one. The Avatar trilogy would be interesting as well. Beyond that, there aren't too many series I would in movie form.
I am actually pining for a Dragonlance Trilogy, doing the Chronicles on film, I think that would be really cool.

The last d&d movie thread explained why the original movie was such trash and how it made money. But relying on the brand name now, with LotR such the success it is, is not going to work.

Every fantasy movie from now on will be compared to LotR. So an FR movie will need a decent plot, lots of action and excellent special effects, not to mention some established actors (Brad Pitt) and some on the rise (Eric Bana, though I wouldn't want to see him in it).

I can't really think of someone right now who would be a good Drizzt Do'Urden.

If anybody cares, I know I could make a good Drizzt;)
Jagermeister

07-27-03, 02:03 AM
One might consider the possibility that any FR movie would look like a horrible Tolkien knock off without some effort to make it otherwise.

As stated above, comparisons will be abundant. Tolkien influence on D&D in general is strong, and FR is certainly not spared of it.
(Belegost? Beregost? to name one...)

This is not to say that a FR movie, or D&D movie could not be good. Only that it would face rampant comparison to the LotR movies and thus, a standard to be compared by.

A FR movie needs something to set it apart as original, and distance it from similarities to LotR...a daunting task perhaps.
Critical Hit

07-27-03, 06:01 AM
There are certain circumstantial similarities between the Icewind Dale Trilogy and LotR.

Crystal Shard = The One Ring
Mithril Hall = Moria
Alustriel = Galadriel
Twinkle = Sting

But I'm not making any accusations.

Here's a checklist for a FR movie:

No huge names -(ex: Arnold, Tom Cruise) Big Name = Big Salary (avg $20 mil) use unknowns or established actors. Make the movie and story the star.
Maybe a cameo like Sean Connery as Elminster.
Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (Mystique, X2) would also look hot as a Drow Elf.

Single Vision- Director, screenplay, producer all one guy or a group with previous cooperations, if available do involve the original author. It's how Peter Jackson made LotR so successful.

Location- New Zealand. Great natural scenery. No Film Unions. Keep cost down.

No animation or total CGI- Final Fantasy was a technical breakthrough, but was dismissed with a "Cartoons are for Kids" mentality and did poorly. You need to reach a wider audience.

Music- Orchestra. It's a medieval Fantasy setting.

Keep it PG-13- on average PG-13 movies do the best in theaters than rated R or PG movies.

Release Date- Wait a few years after LotR: Return of the King comes out on DVD.

I casted the Sembia series, but it would be better to choose from the better known Drizzt novels or BG games.

Thamalon: Anthony Hopkins
Shamur: Michell Pfeiffer
Tamlin: Ioan Gruffudd (Horatio Hornblower, BlackHawk Down)
Tazi: Jennifer Garner (Daredevil, Alias)
Talbot: Collin Farrell (Daredevil, Phone Booth)
Erevis: Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter)
Larajin: Julie Stiles (Save the Last Dance)

Critical Hit, you're right. Rebecca Romijn-Stamos would make a perfect Drow.

Sound and Music
The only way to go is with John Williams (Star Wars) for the music. Since the guys who made "Harry Potter" got John to do music, I suppose if someone made a FR movie, they could get John to do it for them, for the right price.

But money is the name of the game here. If they made a FR movie they'd need a good-sized budget for it to be good. Need good SFX too, for magic and monsters and such.

in regards to the LOTR comparrisons

i think the return of the archmages trilogy would be a good series to follow in regard to that because the series shows some massive differences to LOTR

the biggest one being that in middle earth elves are godlike beings were as return of the archmages shows elves in FR are really quite fragile and cpable of being incredably stupid

though to do this some parts would have to be added in to give a brief explanation of who people like elminster and kelbren are, and explain the sharn (most of which could probably just be added into melegaunts dialog when they are traveling)

lus if pulled off correctly then the film would look really spectacular with all the magic being thrown around :)

Im with Des we have talked about a movie based off of the 3 books in the Icewind dle set and it would be so cool. But you need a director that can do it.

Or Gorion if we did BG.

It's a little known fact that Vin Diesel plays D&D...........

Bruce Willis could do Minsc if he shaved his head again.

Once again: Johnny Depp. He was quite entertaining in Pirates of the Carribian.

regardless of that fact I think Vin Diesel is a horrible actor! Plus I don't think he could do a decent voice for any part!
Herr Doktor

07-27-03, 03:31 PM
Vin Diesel is a brute!

Give 'em a brutes role... since he seems to usually play someone with a sense of honor or duty, maybe a Paladin of some sort.

-----

Personally, I think it should be a book to film screenplay written with the help of the author of the chosen book. The actors should be new faces, but good representations.

I think a single film would be more a realistic possibility than an entire trilogy... and not many of the book trilogies could fit into one film.

If it's not a book adaptation then it should be a new story involving some known characters.

-----

Maybe something based around the fall of Netheril or the Crown Wars would make a good film.

Something realms-shattering, something big! The Avatar Trilogy would be neat, but again... one film is probably fifty-thousand times more likely to actually be taken into consideration.

07-27-03, 03:41 PM
Something else that would be cool is a film starring the Iconic Characters out of the PHB. Think about Tordek, Alhandra, Mialee, Lidda, Redgar, Jozan, Soveliss, Ember, Vadania, Neblin, Krusk, Gimble, Hennet, and maybe even the unnamed psionic characters!
In a totally new story....that would be awesome!
Herr Doktor

07-27-03, 03:57 PM
I think those iconics belong to the Greyhawk setting though?

Please, dear Cyric, not this.

Vin Diesel has good stage presence but also has the lisp from Hell, so I would keep his lines as few & far between as possible.

Vin would make a decent Eastern Barbarian type.

Prolly look cool as Hell as a Tuigan.

Weird thought: Natalie Portman as Imoen.

Angelina Jolie as Jahiera.
Vin or Bruce Willis as Minsc.

Matthew Mc could do a good barbarian or fighter, if he was in "Reign of Fire mode". If he was in "How to lose a guy in 10 days" mode, he'd do a good palidan. Hmmmmm..... A palidan with a southern accent........

If your looking for a Realms shattering story, may I once again suggest Baldur's Gate? But don't follow the books. Get some of the Bioware folks who made the game to help with it. I personally don't find Jahiera very photogenic for a romance, so probably use a different NPC.

Firstly, let me say that yes the D&D movie was not the masterpiece that LotR is, but I still liked it.

D&D Movie was the worst movie I watched that year. The only redeeming value it had is that I did not take my wife to go watch it, and therefore spared myself the embarrasment of having to explain to her that D&D is not that ridiculously stupid.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is almost as dumb. I don't recommend it.

An FR movie should include at least one known actor in it. It should be filmed in various exotic settings as well. I think it should combine a bit of Braveheart/Gladiator/LoTR's. The biggest problem is how to handle magic. Magic is considered a very childish thing and unless it's portrayed correctly most adults will be turned off by it. Music is also extremely important to a film. All 3 titles I previously mentioned had great background music to them.

Just my 2 lp (lead pieces):

Good plots:

-The fall of Netheril. Make Karsus a tragic hero and you'll get a Shakesperian epic opus.
-The Dark Elf Trilogy. I don't recommend the IWD one - it's too traditional, Homeland instead is awesome. Drizzt's final words "What place is this that I call home? These are my people, by skin and by heritage, but I am no kin to them. They are lost and ever will be." will forever be burnt in my mind.
-Elminster: the Making of a Mage or Spellfire. With such a simple plot, you basically need the most incredible FX cinema has ever seen and you've got a sure commercial success. I wouldn't probably like it, though.

Good actors:

-Anthony Hopkins as any evil lich you can think of.
-Manuela Arcuri as Mystra or Midnight. I don't think many non-Italians know her, suffice to say that she's hot as hell and - most important - has two really odd eyes, very elongated but not in a Chinese way, and to me they really resemble the ones in the old Mystran symbol. Just check this picture here (www.manuelaarcuri.it).
-The "bad guy" from Gangs of New York (can't remember his name) as Fzoul Chembryl or some high-up evil leader. Not in a thousand eons will I forget his interpretation of the wretched gang leader in that otherwise-boring film.

Good music:
-Orchestra music would be fine. Hiring Rondellus, a medieval music group from Estonia, would be even better.
-One exception: should the Cult of the Dragon come into play, let Rhapsody's Power of the Dragonflame shook the floor and the audience's ears. Just let me post the bridge and chorus:

The heart of the dragon is screaming awaiting / To write the black last page / The page of blood was written by them / The dead now lying on the sand
From the silent hills we scream loud your name / Mighty power of the dragonflame / From the mountains proud and strong / We call our dragonlord
Rise... Rise... Mighty dragon, rise!!!

Yup. I wished to make a Cult-centered adventure just to play the music while a dracolich creation ritual took place.

I dunno. I think a TV show may do pretty good, if done correctly.

If SciFi can turn dreck like the last few Tremors movies into a fairly successful series, they can do something with the FR.

SciFi knows epics: Children of Dune was magificent.

Personally, I wouldn't do anything based on the novels.

I'd do a continuing multi-part serial kinda like Alias, start off with a group of novice adventurers, and follow their misadventures.

First episodes would be a three-parter with the module Beneath the Twisted Tower as the intial adventure / basic storyline.

I love that intro module.

I'd also include a "cool race" like a female Water Genasi or something in the party for the " Captain Kirk / FarScape exotic, alien babe admirer" crowd.

The party leader would be an Aasimar warrior with white hair: a compromise for the ladies viewing the series.

The perfect FR movie would not have any Big Names (Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwartzenegger) anyone who wants 10+million dollars. They'd kill the movie before filming even begins. Secondly it honest should NOT be based off any novels or games. No Drizzt, no Minsc, because the only people who'd see it are the people who play and/or read it and no studio wants to limit viewers. Plus everyone would rip it apart when any difference from original version to screen shows and that would be a tedious debacle in itself. Make sure someone worthy writes the screenplay someone who could do a descent job. Like who ever wrote the screen play for the 13th Warrior which IMO was a pretty good flick, even though Micheal Crichton wrote the book originally. They'd have to write it to get a fan base and not to make a quick buck, that was the downfall of the Batman movies, TOO commercial. Then hopefully somewhere down the line maybe introduce a TV show.

True enough, but HP and LOTR are pop icons, & there is enough buzz surrounding them to attact the curious along with the fans.

As much as I'd like to think otherwise, I don't think that the FR enjoys that type of pop status.

So many people the world over have read LOTR, nevermind the hobbit I'd be hard pressed to have found anyone who hadn't heard of either books before the movies came out. As for Harry Potter many people took their children to see it, not too many adults I know would have even bothered otherwise, myself included. FR compared to those 2 would come off as an art film to the general public especially if it tried to push existing characters. I'm not knocking existing characters in games in novels I've read and played a healthy portion of both. I'm just saying if you want to get a studio behind don't narrow the scope.

I wouldn't mind seeing a FR movie being made; it doesn't have to be as excellent as the LotR movies, but it should at least be better than the god-forsaken D&D movie (prays to Ao to erase the memory of such a failure from the minds of mankind).

I have been thinking about this for a while, and this thread has really put a few things into perspective.
1 - Messing with existing stuff wouldn't work because it would jsut be a history lesson.
2 - If it's not done perfect it will end up like the DnD movie (may the gods help us all if it does).
3 - I think if enough of us devoted fans pitched in, it would have a decent budget.
I really like the idea of making a whole new story with new charaters. Though the problem would be this: either a tv show would have to follow the move to continue the adventure, becasue the hour and a half attention span of america has brought us can't detail too well, or the show would have to come first, and cap off with a movie at the end.
Oh, and I'd really like to see a human kid specialist sorcerer with a little too much experiance for his age, but not bright enough to do much about it.

Rather than present my ideal scenerio, I'm going to speculate about how I think such a project would actually develop.

Forgotten Realms, the Movie. Could it even happen?

I say yes. I base this on three points:

1. The Dungeons and Dragons movie, while awful, did actually make a profit (primarily from overseas distribution, from what I've heard). So, it's been demonstrated that something like FR:tM would have an audience, even if the movie was terrible. Considering how bad Dungeons and Dragons was, it'd be difficult to make something worse than that.

2. Lord of the Rings has been tremendously successful. Another fantasy property with as much marketing potential as LotR would likely hold appeal for this reason.

3. Of late, the movie industry has been trolling other media for concepts and ideas. For example, we've seen an unprecedented number of films based on comicbooks in recent years. I'm not talking just the superhero stuff, either. Ghost World, Road to Perdition, and From Hell all come to mind as well. This trend is showing no signs of letting up anytime soon.

Based on the above, I think an FR movie is in the realm of possibility (pardon the pun).

But what form would it take?

Well, I think Drizzt being in it is practically a given. He is, by far, the most successful character that has come out of the material to date... which means, as a marketable property, he's the best bet. If any character's appeal is going to translate, it's going to be Drizzt's. The popularity of Orlando Bloom's Legolas makes the drow ranger even more of an obvious choice.

Also, Drizzt is a good story vehicle, simply because he's initially as new to the world as the audience is. As he learns about it, so do the viewers.

But the movie is about the Realms, not Drizzt. So, while he'd be the centerpiece, there'd have to be other characters introduced around him... preferably characters that were suitably iconic enough to be the focus in sequels and spinoffs.

So, the story would probably be loosely (very loosely) based around the Icewind Dale trilogy. Drizzt emerges, gets involved with a group of characters, and they get caught up in some sort of adventure. The other characters wouldn't necessarily be those that we're already familiar with. The story would be "reimagined".

Elminster would no doubt be involved in some way.

Talent.

No real big names, no "first tier" movie stars. It wouldn't have the budget for it. People who already have some significant name recognition in genre work would be likely. Ben Browder and/or Claudia Black (Farscape), for example. Speaking of Farscape, filming it in Australia or New Zealand would probably be prudent, budget-wise. If that happened, I'm sure we'd see folks like Lani Tupu (Farscape) or Michael Hearst (Hercules) involved.

Musical score. I would guess that there'd be a concerted effort to distinguish the FR film from LotR (you do not want to be compared directly to that, particularly if you're low budget), so I bet there'd be a move away from the big orchestral scoring. The approach to the music of FR would likely be more hip and contemporary. We'd have a soundtrack featuring name bands. The incidentals would be more ambient, and would come from someone like Tomandandy (the Mothman Prophecies) or Eric Serra (the 5th Element, the Professional).

Those are my predictions. It's not the way I'd do it, but it's probably close to how it'll hapen, if it happens at all.

Not only the filming in Canada is even more competitive than New Zealand, but the location is closer to Hollywood, and the scenery is simply majestic. I can definitely envision a Canadian Rockies version of the Spine of the World!

lets face it, making a D&D movie (even if it was fantastic!) wouldn't make that much dough in the US cos 90% of the population either (a)hasn't heard of it (b) thinks its a game where kids get carried away and kill eachother (that actually happened in the 70's) or (c) its a dumb game that nerds and geeks play. I think if you had alot of money and you got a overseas production company you could actually make a deccent movie. The main thing you'd have to do is not advertise it as a D&D movie, but as Forgotten Realms or some other title. Few people would actually know what the Forgotten realms is, so you'd be basically advertising as a fantasy movie (which you'd have to make darker than it really is). You wouldnt want to get your fingerprints on the trainwreck of the 1st D&D movie. cheers!

I think the with support of the couple thousand people on the wizards forums, and the many more who aren't, we could make a at the very least write a good FR screenplay. As IntotheNight said, the would of D&D isn't a popular image, but with some work I think we could change that. It might have to start out as an overseas film, or an independant, but I sure it could be done.

IntotheNight: Concur. It had a few good one-liners - "If I ain't drinkin', you ain't shoppin'!" but that's about it. I don't know what it would've taken to fix that movie, if possible.

I will stress one thing, should anyone seriously take up such a project. Plot will make or break a movie, plain and simple. Actors, actresses, sets, SFX, etc. mean nothing without a good story.

Yes - there's stiff competition from the Lord of the Rings movies, and there's no doubt that such a project would be gauged against that.

I'm sure there's a list of favorite actors/actresses we'd all like to see, and probably envision them as select Realms characters - has anyone considered Hugo Weaving for Szass Tam? :)

If we did Baldur's Gate, I would suggest this:

Don't base it on the books. Get some of the foplks at Bioware.

Don't have the main character be a human fighter. Make it a tallfellow halfling rouge. Maybe Adrian Brody could play the part. Or me. :D
Hanadur

Yeah, and keep it away from Hollywood. I mean, one of the reasons LotR is so fantastic is because Hollywood wasn't a part of it at all (well, a few of the stars had starred in HW productions, but that's it). Sweet Hollywood, who gave us vikings with horned helmets and pink ninjas that go "haiya" everytime they attack someone (somersaulting, flipping, and cartwheeling their way to the opponent, of course, finishing him off with a weapon truly non-ninja.)

I could imagine a FR with a few (note: very few) known names, but here, it is a matter of resemblance, not experience. That's the key to themed movies.

I'm not casting anyone. Let there be a movie, I pray, and make it better (in fact, make it FAR better) than the D&D movie.

Well before we start any production ideas, we need a script. If no one else will take initiative, I will. Not saying that can only be one, just that we need to start somewhere. I just need a city where I could stage a war with soem Formians.

Just had a thought, who said it has to be on Faerun? Why not a story about the new continent of Meztica?

As we all know FR is the 500lb gorilla for WotC. Thus it would have to be a much better movie than D&D. But did you know Joel "the Matrix" Silver is making a 2nd D&D movie, with the same production company (Sweatpea entertainment) that made the 1st???

As for our FR movie. Listen to the Posters who say no big name, Epic Level movie stars. No Arnie, no Vin, no Angelina, it won't happen. Look for people who play good character actors. People used to special effects work and heavy makeup. Look at people who seem to do a lot of Fantasy/SciFi work.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Planet of the Apes) is a good example
Jeff Imada (fight coreographer for Daredevil, Rising Sun, starred in Big Trouble in Little China)
Ray Park (Darth Maul, Toad)
Milla Jovovich (5th Element, the Messenger) a viable actress for fantasy and sci/fi projects
Dina Meyer (Johnny Mnemonic, Starship Troopers, Birds of Prey), Neal McDonough (Minority Report, Star Trek First Contact, Band of Brothers),
Tcheky Karyo (Wing Commander, Blade II, the Patriot)
Ron Perlman (Blade II, Hellboy, Alien Resurrection)

given time I could give you dozens of character actor/actresses that would do a good job on not making a FR movie Crap.

Would be cool to see, but the story would have to be unique and the big name characters should be left out. Everyone has their own view of Drizzt, Elminster, Khelben, etc that seeing one writer's interpretation on the big screen would be a disaster.

If it ever does happen, I'd like to see an all new set of heroes and villains for the movie that can then be brought INTO the Realms PnP stuff.

And for the love of God, leave out the drow! I am so sick of drow.

Point One: The Drow are usually referred to as Dark Elves, not Black Elves.

Point Two: The Drow, in no way, shape, or form, resemble African-Americans, nor do most African-Americans worship a bloodthirsty spider goddess.

Therefore, no resonable racial or cultural connotations can be inferred, unless the Drow are specifically portrayed to mimic said culture.

I seriously doubt that will happen.

Ok, if you are gona have any movie, it should be about BG.
Reason why: BG has a more stable plot line than any drizzt book. It was made for GP or a movie, but Drizzt sagas were made for reading and on going TV show type books. If you wanted to make a strong, good movie then it has to be about BG.

heres my good cast:

Vin Diesil---saverok, all the way. He looks the saverok part and could wear that big gulky plate-mail with armor spikes, and make it look good.

Lucy Lui-------tamako(sp?). She would play a really good tamako(sp?)

cameorn deiez-------imoen. I think she would play a good imoen cause she has that kind of child-hood beauty thing going on.

Helena bonham carter----bondhi all the way. she would play the best vampire, no doubt about it.

Miranda Richardson----the female drow: Visonia(sp?)
sorry for the bad spelling but thats all the good parts I can think of so far.......
Dungeon_Master

08-03-03, 06:04 PM
Vin Diesel as Sarevok? Sorry, but no. In ToB, he was Mediteranian. Good idea though. So I'd suggest Laurance Fishburne. Now, Vin Diesel as Minsc could be good if Vin is willing to act slightly insane and carry a hamster like a weapon.

Diaz as Imoen.... Never thought of that.

I thought we agreed earlier that the drow were "ebony", the color of piano keys? But, I can just see Jack Chick or someone seizing the opportunity to make it look like the film was racist.

As for BG...

Here's the party I'd like to see:

main character

Minsc

Jahiera

Aerie

Valgyr

switch character as last one throughout the whokle movie (but use Eric Idle as Jan ;) )

and finally Imoen, once they find her.

One thing... Dungeon_Master... in ToB Sarevok was in no way an "African-American." Look at the picture... it looks like dark mediteranean (however you spell that) character... and if he did look african he would in no way be african american... so if you think he looks african just call it african... its a bit overboard to make sure that none of ur speech could be interpreted as racist (which in a way is racism)... but anyway I digress (sorry got carried away)... Oh yes, I did not mean that in any harmful or aggresive way.. I just dont like it when people act like that.

I would actually agree with Sarevok... Vin Diesel would make a very good Sarevok... He even looks like Sarevok from TOB, its a very good resemblance. Also Sarevok is mostly a maniacal evil "tough guy, I am gonna kill you all" brute. I am absolutely sure Vin Diesel could play that. Also when I first started reading this thread, I immedietly thought of Vin Diesel as Sarevok because of his resemblance in not only figure (aka big bulky guy), but also in personality (mostly from the movies he has made).

IMO Vin Diesel would make a TERRIBLE Minsc... he is no humrous... and he cant possibly portray minsc... except maybe in bulk... while most other actors on the "dream lists" are unrealistic... I think Vin Diesel is one of the more realistic types for the actors in any FR movie or whatever... The reason for this, is he actually plays D&D and possibly (Its a bit of a stretch) might agree to a lower "pay check" just like Brad Pitt did in snatch (Mostly cause he would think it would be cool to play in a D&D movie that has a PLOT).

Ok... now I've started babbling... hmm anyway to stop myself before I go on forever... I agree with others on the fact that there should not be big names (as the cost would be too high)... A BG movie would be very cool... and I doubt that the many people that played BG will go out of the way and be a pain in the butt like the LOTR fanatics (Movie and book have to be different sheesh, although both (well all four of em hehe) are great). I also agree if they decide to make a Baldur's gate movie, stick to bioware... and grab a book or so... I think Bioware would be great help for plot purposes and for making into an actual movie.

As for the really big names that are established like Drizzt and Eliminster... perhaps it would be wise to steer clear from them.. as it gets a bit complicated... but with Baldur's gate the game (first one would be more appropriate IMO) there would be a lot of room for editing and what not... and hardly anyone (if anyone) would complain. Now that idea with a moderately decent budget = good profitable movie for wizards... cool movie for us.... better name for D&D... which in turn = to wizards making even MORE money... Just a thought

*Catches his breath* There... thats enough lol.... jeeze that was long.. no more babbling from these sod

I would much rather prefer a weekly TV show. Either live-action ala Farscape ( a wonderful show by the way) or animated. Animation is still in its infancy, with huge story potential. Remember, The Forgotten Realms has as many stories to tell as there are thieves in Waterdeep! I would stay away from CG and use traditional animation mixed with CG.

The questions would be if they can properly market an Animated FR show to kids and adults. Can Wizards make more money through TV or a Film Franchise? A TV show would also allow Wizard to promote thier products to a built in fan base. Add to this, peripheral products like, comics, toys, sci-fi franchises, ets? If you were marketing Aliens V The Return of the Queen, wouldn't you advertise during Forgotten Realms Animated?

I'm surprised Wizards hasn't tapped this opportuntiy yet. I know we fan-boys would gobble it up.:D

this is why vin deisel would be a hot topic as saverok. He is that big brut, but give him a face tatoo, and yellow eyes behind the evil skull mask in the heavy spiked full plate and you got your saverok. They just need to get the guy who did saveroks voice to do a voice over in the movie cause his voice was tight! also the same for Irenecus, which would be played by a realy buff/skinny anthony hopkins.......
as for abdel, you just gotta find someone the same age as saverok cause he is supposed to be same age. Saverok and abdel are the same age.. But really, godlberg wouldn't work...... now the rock might but he is not to hot of an actor.......... (you need someone with the long black hair and muscular features for abdel....)

Just my humble opinion, but I would not like it if they'd bring Baldur's Gate to the big or small screen.

You can't get more Epic than LotR. Sorry, I had to bring this up: it's probably been beaten to death but obviously a lot of people on this list still have access to raise dead or resurrection it seems!!

Don't get me wrong: I'm not against a FR movie or TV show. However, the suggested actors on this thread are simply over the top for a movie of the genre. To put things in perspective: LotR only used one major actor (McKellen), with two other young celebrities (Wood and Tyler - not major stars). You guys are suggesting Conneries and Diazes, payrolls that make no sense!

My second point, if there is such a thing, is that Baldur's Gate, while being a great video game, would make a very poor movie. A TV show, maybe (and that's a BIG maybe), because the fedex/go fetch type of short term missions in the game would only be translated properly in short episodes (show begins, intrigue happens, PCs investigate, PCs fight, show ends with PCs laughing heartily over a beer from a joke told by the comic relief - probably a dwarf or a FX (they have to be slim now...) halfling).

So summary, if they want to bring FR to the screen, they need three things:

- Kickass script: don't be shy to bring the dark elf trilogy and go big with this (CGIs of an Underdark setting like Menzo would alone bring viewers to the theatres...)
- No name actors only! no flashy hollywood jerks.
- Film it in the Canadian Rockies (this one is just a gut feeling... :) )

no way that you'd use a game as a movie. Thats just wrong. There is a Baldurs Gate book, but number 2 was kind of disturbing when they shout abdel into the tree. And yes, no names would be good, but you need sort of look-a-likes. Vin, I am sure, would do the best role of saverok, but everyone else...well the vampir I put and Viconia were perfect. But a sorta diez look for Imoen would be good. Occourse they don't mention Imoen until book two............ As for minsc, you can go find some tall, bald guy at the gym. I'm sure there is a no-name that would fit minsc part.....

Tamako would probably be as easy to find as minsc.
Dungeon_Master

08-04-03, 03:49 PM
Why Abdel?

Personally, I find something like a half-elf or tallfellow halfling rouge better than a human fighter.

A few bigger name actors that would be nice though:

Christopher Walken. He does great bad guys, and he can do good guys too.

Cameron Diaz. She just looks like Imoen.

I agree, Colorado rockies or New Zealand. Ireland could be cool too.

BTW, Purple Dragon, mind if I steal the pic? That's pretty funny! :D

08-04-03, 05:20 PM
No you don't want a look alike to the computer game. You want someone who could play the part convincingly, not just because they resemble the game... beside only players of the Game would recognize that. Not good reasoning for wide audience base.

PDK, I may have a skewed view of who was a big named actor in LotR... But are you saying Ian Holm, John Rhys Davies, Viggo Mortenson, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchet, and Christopher Lee are not Big names in Hollywood??? ). Sean Astin was in GOONIES!!! JRD has been in all 3 Indiana Jones movies and a weekly TV scifi series that did pretty darned well, Sliders I think it was (sarcasm is in jest). Brad Dourif (Gima Wormtongue)... come on now anyone ever seen Dune (David Lynch version), Alien Resurrection, the voice of Chucky from Child's Play!!!

On a serious note, the best way for a FR movie to see the light of the silver screen would be to come up with a truly original story, one that could open peoples eyes to the world of the Forgotten Realms. Obviously a story idea by either the lead game designers or the the Top novel writers would be the best to start. Then finding a screenwriter with a ggod track record in the genre to flesh it out into movie format and a director with the right cinematic vision should be brought aboard (assuming a studio has bitten at the Treatment or screenplay).

Movies are complicated to get into production. Casting would be tough. Again no Epic level stars are in the running for parts like this. Solid character actors and young up and comers are what you'd have to pick from. No Sean Connery's, no Arnold (he'll be too busy running California... ), no Camron Diaz or Adrian Brodies (sorry D_M).
Dungeon_Master

08-04-03, 05:29 PM
I didn't know Adrian was all that big-name yet. I only saw him in The Pianist. No, no need to apoligize to me. I really don't care who plays what characters as long as they look the part.

No Brad Pitts or Leonardo DiCaprio's though. Last thing I want is a chick-flick. That's why if we did BG, it should be a nopn-human PC and we should tone down the romance plotline.

Why not do an animated feature? You could still get known (or unknown actors, like myself) to do the voice parts and not have to worry about

a) location
b) special effects or
c) all of the inevitable direct comparisons to the LotR trilogy

Also, much as I like Orlando Bloom (don't get me wrong, LOVED him in Pirates and LotR) I would hate to see him in a D&D movie as would hate to see him get pigeonholed as an actor that just plays elves or high fantasy roles.

Just my 2 copper.

An R-rated FR series (with heads being chopped and blood spraying once in a while ;) ) would be pretty cool! Maybe something along the lines of the Animatrix would certainly attract my patronage! (series of short animated pictures each done by a different artist, none of which need be interconnected storywise... the Realms are big after all!)

Heck, I'd settle for G-rated movie if it would mean having the Realms on screen (hmm... I am soooo biased: truth is, I'd settle for anything with the FR logo on it... :P )

Eh, want to explain why not using Abdel would be bad? I kind of think a smart, agile halfling (think 16-18 int 20 dex) would be cool. Make him a tallfellow so he's 5-foot. And make him as good looking as you want if you feel we need some hunk like Abdel was supposed to be.
Just don't use Abdel, and don't use the Jahiera-romance is all I ask.

I think most of the target audience (D&D players and PC gamers) could relate to someone smart and agile better than your basic jock, which is what I translate Abdel as.

Occourse there are some parts in the book they really really really have to change.

I haven't read the book all the way through. Mind outlining a few parts? The one I know of is the "relationship" between Imoen and a drow priestess. No, I'm not against homosexuals. I just don't think that fits Imoen's personality.

Like I said, I find Abdel a bit jockish for my tastes.

Anybody thought of one of the TeamBG mods like Kelsy? He could be interesting as a cameo.

As for where to film:

Colorado and New Zealand for outdoors is my suggestion.

Some spoof jokes would be neat. Maybe some sort of "in" joke only gamers would get? :D

The main character should be at least somewhat interested in Bhallspawn abilities, makes the movie deeper and more mature if he could become a murderous psychopath. I suppose youd have to make him choose the "good" path at the end for political reasons. BTW did you notice there is no neutral path for the trials in Hell? There was at least one trial I remember that a neutral character would not feel compelled to take the good path but if you dont your alignment becomes evil.

I'd like to see the main character (if he must be human) as a somewhat weak, but intelligent and dexteritous, thief. His appearance belies his true power..... :D

Peter Woodward........ I should have thought of that.....

R. Lee Ermy as Korgan could be fun. :)

i beg to differ, i would much rather see a sort of "outcast" type charicter, whos past is slowly unvieled through the course of the tv show/movie/(insert other media medium here), it would be great if the main charicter could be extremely deep with a very poetic soul, for example, Spike from Cowboy Bebop. Drizzt would work rather nicely as well, just for the sake of some degree of familiarity to the realms.

i have to agree that a new storyline would be best, because its not like dnd has the best rep amongst people who dont really know it, jut have heard of it. its mostly related to nerds/dorks. This is the reason why i think an extremely well defined story with plenty of twists, (with the main charicter type described above if possible) would work great, it would help dispell the image a little IMO, just because its so deep. O yea, and about music, i think some sort of DJ Shadow mix would do the job nicely (if u havent heard, download dj shadows "giving up the ghost" and "...meets his maker").

i think the whole idea of making an anime sort of realms show would be great, i know it would get alot of hype in japan anyway (berserk anyone?). God knows theres plenty of good anime directors out there.

If they made an animated movie I'd say they should go either the 'Final Fantasy' digital route or the 'Spider-Man' on MTV, route, not the typical anime style. Don't get me wrong I like anime but the first time they distort someone's features for one of those exagerrated angry poses (the large vein blocks on the forehead), I wouldn't enjoy it at all, and would leave the theater. The hyper realistic visual style of 'Final Fantasy' would be awesome, but I know that would be outrageously expensive. Spider-Man on MTV animation is cool, looks like it relies on a good deal of computers also but not that photo-realistic graphics. Besides anime D&D has been done already, i.e. 'Record of the Lodus War', and 'Berserk' to name a couple.

I hope that the LOTR trilogy and Peter Jackson have shown the world that fantasy movies don't have to be live action cartoons with poor effects and plot.

No they don't, but the financial bar has been raised to epic proportions. If they (and from what I understand a new D&D movie is in the works according to Dragon #310) spend less than 80 million you can bet it'll be a failure.

Now if the go the route of something like "final fantasy", they could spend less than that and perhaps still make money.

But if they go the same route they went with that first movie, the new one won't even make it to theaters.

To Sum Up.

Masakado's lists of "Don't"s

1) Don't repeat horror of first D&D movie
2) Don't use novels or computer game material if you can help it.

I'd stay away from the world shattering epic stories (BG2, etc.) because I don't think that the entireity of Faerun needs to be in jeopardy for this to be an endearing film.

Some local peril would do just nicely.

Save iconic characters as easter eggs ala the hidden treats found in X2. (ex. bumping into Erevis Cale while at a market, seeing Wulfgar or Volo drinking at a tavern.)

I just want to see them produce something that I'd go watch even if I've never heard of DnD... Something I'd love to watch just because its a good movie. D&D needs recognition and a wider variety of players. With a decent and popular enough movie, wizards could rake in all types of profits, whether from the movie or from the new added players. With more money, Hasbros hunger for money will be temporary sated (and I do mean temporarily), and this might allow wizards to publish more material and flesh out a lot more for us gamers... While a lot of DMs, including myself, do a lot of work for the game, I am inherintly lazy, and I think a lot of people are out there, would be nice for wizards to publish stuff we could all use.

I agree. The veins and "bug eyes" that happen when they're suprised tick me off. So do the teardrops on the side of the head when they're embarassed (Sailor Moon. I hated that show.).

The two best examples of cartoon Anime I've seen so far would be Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop.

to tell the truth, I'd rather see it done Final Fantasy movie style, so we could have a few voice-overs from the original people who did the character. That was a cool movie though.... I want to see it again.

Live action would be fun too though.

Keep in mind that Princess Mononoke was also anime and didn't use any of the typical anime expressions. In fact Myazaki's style of anime forgoes those comics-meets-film interpretations entirely, and instead uses simple and easily read expressions.

Keep in mind that the big tear/sweat drop is also culturally derived in Japan, and we living in North America (and Europe) often miss the references without dialogue cues and other inflections that often missed or ignored since they don't have any cultural context.

The biggest argument of the last five pages was casting.

Casting is critical. Yes.

Faces are not.

All of the characters that have been mentioned have that certain untouchable quality that make them who they are. Their voice.

While the entire FR universe has not been mapped out vocally, several iconic characters have.

Most of you would recognize the following people even if you had never before seen their faces:

Kath Soucie - voice of Aerie, also did voice of Dot from the Animaniacs.

Grey Delisle - voice of Viconia, Nalia. (very attractive woman)

Kevin Michael Richardson - voice of Sarevok, also currently doing the voice in the K9 Advantix commercial on TV.

Michael Bell - Transformers cartoon, Groppler Zorn from Star Trek TNG Premiere Episode.

Michael Dorn - Worf from Star Trek TNG, Coldstone from Gargoyles, Goliath Pilot from the game Starcraft. This man has a really distinctive voice and could be put to good use.

Mike Meyers - voice of Shrek

Jim Cummings - probably the busiest voice out there. Has done voice work for Tv & Film for many years. If you've seen Shrek, he was the voice of the Captain of the Guards.

Making a fully animated movie like SHREK would be ideal.
Making a partial CG movie like HULK could work as well.
Making a live action would be near impossible.

Why?

The Forgotten Realms setting is "High Fantasy", which includes too many fantasic feats of magic or physical prowess, for example, to translate into a believable story.

Audiences today are too clever to allow any discrepancy to escape judgment. We can see the prosthetic, we know it's a tinted contact lens, and those damn wires and cables that increase the arc of an actors jump are just ridiculous. The list can go on and on.

The trick for them is to trick us. Create an undetectable illusion of reality and put it on the screen.

I always wondered who did the voicing for Aerie. (BTW, I think she was the narrator in Icewind Dale II)

Funny that the person who voiced Nalia was the same one who voiced Vinconia. The characters were just so diffrent.

I'd like to know, however: Who did Minsc, and who was Irenicus?

(BTW, I think I know who did Imoen)

Mike Myers as Shrek I knew though. ;)

Yea, Dungeon_Master, I agree, I think Aerie did do the narrator's voice in IWD2

But anyways, my one point that I wanted to make, (I don't think anyone else has come up with it...), is that, if they do happen to make a movie based in Forgotten Realms, however remotely, I just hope that they don't mess up like they did in D&D and use like three different creatures... Dragons, Beholders, and... dragons? lol. But that peeved me, because there are so many more interesting things to see out there. I mean, I personally would love to see displacer beasts, mind flayers, SOME drow, (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos :D :D) and there are about a million other things they can do too...

And one last comment, I wouldn't mind if they used the Harpell's from the Drizzt books in some way, shape, or form, even if it is just as a comedic relief! lol

David Warner ,one of my favorite character actors of the past twenty years did the voice of the indominable Jon Irenicus. He played roles such as 'Evil' from Time Bandits and St. John Talbot in Star Trek The Final Frontier.

lol, I know what a vulcan is! I'm a trekkie!

Acctually, Vulcans are close, but they need smoother facial features. The ears are perfect, but the hair needs fixed (longer, closer to human styles), less defined facial features, ect.

I need to watch something besides the originals and TNG someday. :(

Maskado: True, a small scale thing would be good. Personally, I think that would be better for a TV series, but it coulod work.

Large scale crisis just seems to be a weird trend with me I guess. Each their own.

Listen if your going to do a CG movie than there is one voice you can't be without...MARK HAMILL (that's Luke Skywalker for those of you who don't know). Since his near fatal, disfiguring car accident he's done a lot of voice acting. However I believe that his most memorable character was The Joker in the Batman cartoon. Mark Hamill would make a great nearly anything he's just so talented.

Actually D_M, what you said here kinda reminded me of the interviews on the X-men 1.5 DVD set (but with an opposing opinion). When asked, none of the major players in the movie, not even Director Brian Singer had ever picked up an X-men comic. Nobody in the movie had any pre-conceived notions as to who they were playing and how it should be done.

Maybe that's a good thing. But then I consider Halle Berry's portrayal of Storm and it makes me queasy.

But then I have to reserve judgment when I think of Elijah Wood as Frodo. He admits in an interview to being a long time fan of the LoTR series.

What I'm thinking is someone might take Drizzit or BG and mess up the storyline (the BG book series did that, but I'm not saying they're bad books. Just saying they strayed quite a bit from the game). That or do a "D&D The Movie" and make you guess "Whats that thing with the purple tentacles wrapped around its own neck?" or "I don't remember anything that looked like THAT in the monster manual!"

Somehow, I think it would be more likely for FR to be translated as an animated feature. For the simple reason that production companies would have to battle the double perception of:

a.) D&D (FR, more so, unless one plays the video games) is unfamiliar fantasy, not like LOTR is. Only those immersed in the game would get inside references, jokes, etc...it would be easier to market this to a brand-new audience.

b.) The last D&D movie, to be blunt about it, SUCKED.

If it did happen, I would the FR Movie to have the consistency and lovely animation at a level equal, at the very least, to that of Lodoss War.

Since most of the community can agree that Drizz't would make an ideal central character, who's art would be most accurate (or more pleasing to the eye) as to the true visage of the popular drow?

This is assuming they do animation and / or CG.

I have seen several different skin colors such as ebony, indigo, and even a deep brown. His hair has been silver and stark white. But to date, I have only heard one voice portrayal, the one heard in his limited appearance on the BG series.

I am partial to Jeff Easley's rendition from the Homeland cover.

As for the best Artist to do Drow... BROM hands down. Easley's cover on Soujourn was damned good, but the Drizzt on the cover of the first Elven issue of Dragon after 3e, and all the covers of the War of the Spider Queen Series rule. If anyone says Rohb Ruppel, I'll disintegrate them. He made Drizz't look ancient on all of the legacy of the drow series covers. Lockwood's got a good style for drow too, his Hunter's Blades covers rock, but Brom is still the master.

Yes Guen would have to be CG.

I just caught sight of this thread and it's waaaay too long for me to go through every response to see if my concerns have already been voiced but, I have a few immediate comments.

Let's NOT think about putting pop-icon players like Jennifer Lopez and Vin Deisle in an FR movie. SERIOUSLY! I really don't think such a thing would be made, but for the sake of argument and just as conversation topic, "J-Lo" would NOT made a good high-fantasy star.

And music...Godsmack? Metallica?

...do you wanna hear that music in the next Lord of the Rings movie? Seriously. THAT is what we have to compare an FR movie to if we wanna play pretend. And seeing Jennifer Lopez appear in LOTR wouldn't much fancy my interests either.

And I don't think any of the PC games would do the Realms justice. None of them were canon and their stories were far too minimal to give justice to a movie. I agree that the Avatar Trilogy would make a good movie series...or possibly the Archwizards saga (although I have yet to read it, I know some about it).

Of course, it all depends on how you look at it. Would you want a movie that told a lot about the realms, or would you want some action movie that merely took place in the realms?

And on the subject of illustrators for the drow...the cover of "The Thousand Orcs" was the first drawing of Drizzt I'd ever seen that actually did the drow justice...until then I had not seen a single piece of official artwork that made Drizzt look anything like he should have. For gods' sake, Drizzt is like 80 or 90 now...that's like 15-20 in Drow/Elf years, and even though that age in elf years doesn't compare to the mentality of 15-20 in human years, they should sure look a hell of a lot younger than the "800 elf/70 human" Drizzt on the first covers

ANYWAYS.... I agree, the best cover art for any of the books (so far *crosses fingers*) was the Thousand Orcs... It just looked so cool! But I must agree with Prendiloriasslyth... He just looked wayy to old to be a "teen" in the Dark Elf trilogy...

WHADDYA MEAN "NOT CANON"?! ;)

It's canon depending on who you ask. BG WAS a real game, put out by Wizards/TSR and Black Isle.

If you think the Bhaalspawn Wars and near-return of Bhaal were "minimal" in the Realms, then who cares about Drizzit? He hasn't changed the Realms yet. Not the time for a BG argument though. That and I don't want to deal with one.

As for no putting J. Lo in a D&D movie, I agree. Just the reviews for Gigli (sp? I cant even pronounce it!) are enough to tell me that her career is going down hill.

However, Vin DID play D&D.........

Good point. Books and games are basically pre-written though, which saves money and gives a storyline that may work.

If they did BG, I'd prefer just skipping to the 2nd game and making the first one just occfasional "flashbacks" for the character. The first game HAS to be longer than the second.

then make the second one, release it. Then charge overprice byt making the first movie in the "special eddition dvd set"?

Dark Alliance is completely unrelated except for the name as for as I'm aware. The name is a selling point as people will have heard of the Baldur's Gate series. It's also hack and slash in the Diablo mould rather than the PC BG series.

BG:DA reminds me most of gauntlet legends. The reason why it's named baldur's gate is because once again, bg is in trouble.
I think they should do a movie on Baldur's Gate 1 for the comp, only write a different script. Make sure too that they include TotSC on the special eddition DVD cause werewolfs are just too cool.

Thats why we use Garret and a few NPCs from the original. :D

If we did the second one, I'd definately like to see Aerie, Jan, and Valgyr in the plot. They were just well written characters.

Arie was a big wus, but she was good to have your team. They will definatley have to have yoshimo since he betrays you and all.

From bg1 the best cast should be:Khalid &jaheria, branawen (or tordek, whatever his name is from the mines in cloakwood) Imoen, minsc, and then most likely abdel, cause I mean who really wants to see a theif? the best character struggle for the bhaal spawn would be a fighter no matter what (and this is coming from a ranger, which would be cool, just wouldn't fit).

As for everything else, you should see big names as side characters, sorta like how elminster talks to ya in the begging of BG1. Or how you meet Drizzt fighting some Gnolls...but nothing too much that it distracts the plot line. ..at most you just see like Elminster in the background or something like that.

yeah romanticly she would quit after 30 days but then she was like "oh I want to find my own path in life", try turning her down. Oh my god, everytime jaheria hits on you she starts crying. Now , viconia is cool, but......I don't like the dominace thing.

Imoen was the best NPC in bg1 only because she was the only single class besides branwen, kivan, minc, dynaheir, xan, and khalid. Imoen was the only single class rouge which made her more potent and reliable to keep on the team.

Ya. The characters had a bit more personality in BGII though, which I liked. The NPC-PC and NPC-NPC interaction was great. In fact, TeamBG.com has some great mods for that feature alone, as well as area editors, rule modifiers, item makers, creature builders, and map editors, all Bioware supported (well, theres a link to them on Bioware anyhow...)

Still: My favorite NPC. :D

Enough to get a spot in my campaign anyhow.

Acctually, she'll stay with you if you say the right things in the last dialouge.

I personally find Jaheira to nagging (plus its only, what, a month after Khalid dies? That just doesnt seem right. She hardly mourned for him. Plus, I just saw her more as your replacement mentor.), and Vinconia plain scary.

BTW, throw Haer'Dalice in the party sometime. It gets interesting, but I didnt find it all that fun.

And arie does stay with you, just doesn't want to be in your 'tent' anymore. Viconia just....practicly does it every night, and jaheria...never gone to far into her. Now my favorite NPC is the werewolf druid....by helm, whats his name??? He's cool cause in ToB he can turn into greater elementals and shambling mounds and just go whoop ass party on everyone. If you are a ranger or druid class you can turn into one too.....plus jaheria....now thats just devistating(sp?)........3 shambling mounds/greater elementals just is too unstoppable:cool:. I think the idea of a FR movie would be cool, but god if it was anything like the D&D movie forget it!! Honest opinion of characters would have to involve the dwarf guy from lord of the rings, and the elf, he would make an awesome drizzt!! Depending on what the hell the movie was to be about tho.....but honestly, adding undead, awesome magical scenes, awesome dragons, it would be cool.....maybe a movie to do with myth drannor and the search for the magic inside it would be the most awesome!! evil galore!! great setting, great battles, great adventure!!

A film version of the Fall of Myth Drannor would be awesome. There are things in it that are so... Hollywoodians. The Nameless' Sacrifice and the Baneduel are first, of course, but there is also so much more (like the N'Vaelhar).

Only problem is that it is so much epic that it would look like a LotR ripoff, no matter how much the director worked to make it different

I find it stupid that we're worried about "being to epic" and that people will think we ripped off LOTR because of that. Why are we worried about that?

We could be making a movie version of Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 and people would say we were ripping off of S.W.A.T. or Bad Boys II.

So, no matter what we make, there will be someone saying we're ripping off of something or other.

Yeah but theres no way I'd pay 5$ to go see a drizzt movie. I mean yeah he's hella cool but not worth making a movie about. Now a TV show would be more appropriate but I doubt you could get anything better than it turning out like xena or hercules(sp?) witha better plot.
Something like one solid non-cannon event or major war would only work for movies. Such as the baldur's gate, or something like that. Now, for real, don't get a black woman to play elfs.....it doesn't work (no offense colorwise, but elves aren't black cept for drow....who are literally black).

If you're going to write a FR movie script, I suggest you think carefully about an underlying theme and archetypes. The Stars Wars trilogy was strong because people could easily identify with the archetypal characters and because the series followed the structure of the classic heroic epic. Like FR, the Stars Wars universe is rich and deep, but the universe itself was not the focal point of the trilogy - the drama was. (This was reversed IMO in Chapters I and II in which the action just served as a means to showcase the SW universe.)

When choosing which FR settings to use, you probably want to start with someplace generic, like Cormyr. Then move the action to more exotic locales. Don't try to showcase all the Realms, because that's too much information. Pick and choose carefully, but leave in plenty of throwaway references that are placed naturally, like they did in the original Star Wars movies.

Another big question is scope. Does the movie address a problem that affects a small group of adventurers, a town, a nation, or all of Faerūn? The SW trilogy told of a galactic-sized civil war, and it took three movies, as does LotR. Although a Faerūn-sized problem would make an exciting movie, it's probably too much for one movie. A dungeon crawl movie might be interesting (I don't know, I've never seen one that didn't end in a fight with a BBEG). D&D the movie dealt with a national problem, and I'm not sure it worked. I might like to see a movie along the lines of the Mummy Returns, in which the heroes have to recover a dangerous Sharran artifact. They have to deal with politics, dungeons, Sharrans, and Thayans. (Or insert god and group of choice). I liked the Mummy Returns, though.

Vin could work. I think so anyhow. Heck, with the shaved head, he could do Irenicus if his voice was a little diffrent. Or some sort of barbarian. Maybe a BBEG. At the same time though, he'd probably cost ALOT to get in.

Could set the movie in the Anauroch desert. Zhenthil keep is poking around the old ruins, but what are they looking for? Some sort of artifact? A relic from Netheril? Or something older, and more powerful? (cue the Indiana Jones theme :D )

How about that guy that plays the president on 24(can't remember his name) as Valgyr???

In my opinion a FR movie would definitely have to come out of a book or a newly written script.

-The Avatar Series:
Midnight : Either Catherine Zeta-Jones or Milla Jovovich
Kelemvor: The guy that plays Wolverine...
Adon : Sean William Scott(hehe)
Cyric : hhhmmm... can't find one... any suggestions??

or

-The Archwizards Trilogy(I haven't thought about the actors on this one, but the storyline would be great for a movie)

I'd put Wolverine as Cyric as he's just built to be a rouge, but not enough to be a fighter of Kelemvore caliber. I'm not exactly sure who to put as Kel, but he has to be big and bulky. And you can't do the whole trilogy at once. That's just bad. Three movies. Then it will all be clear.

Well lets see, if you want to do the avatar trilogy, then you need 4 principle characters not including secondary characters that show up (Elminster and the like).

Midnight - Hmmm.... neither Catherine-Zeta Jones not Milla Jovovich would be good choices. Both are fine actors, but I just can't picture either of them become Mystra. They don't seem to fit the description very well.

Adon - er... well.... don't know.

Cyric - I could see somebody like Wilem Dafoe doing this if it weren't for the age issue.

Kelemvor - Big, reasonably intelligent. I think that our friend Dwight Johnson might work pretty well (you know The Rock). I'm sure some people will argue with me, but all things considered he's a pretty good actor.
Zat

04-28-04, 04:16 PM

First off, i've read some threads talking about having an alternative (rock) sound track. WHAT!? you want another D&D movie mistake? Remember how bad Krull the Conquerer was because of a rock soundtrack?

In order to have a sucessful FR movie, or another D&D movie you have to use the Lord of the Rings movies as a standard. They are by far the best fantacy movies out there. which means you need:

A big budget
A great producer (or several)
good actors (the D&D movie actors sucked)
A great story (I suggest novels by either Ed Greenwood, my favorite R.A. Salvatore, or Elanine Cunninham).
And a large fan base so you can get a decent studio to make and market the movie.

Its just my opinion, but i think you almost have to have a movie starring Drizzt. He has the biggest following of all the FR characters. Elminster would be a very close second.

As far as actors go, i'm not sure on that one. I would have to do some more thinking on that one.

Anyways, thats my two cents worth.

Aragorn...
Cherrn

05-01-04, 07:45 PM
And please let's stay clear Vin Diesel, we want people with talent in this kinda movie ;)

And it would have to be a story already made lets have it be one that people like, or actually sorta accept as part of the realms. Many people out there don't consider the BG series canon, so that would leave that out. We need something almost everyone accepts. Hmmmmmmm. Cormyr Saga ? All of EC's books perhaps ?
Sadly no RAS cos there is too many Drizzt haters out there and they would just whine and whine if a Drizzt movie was made :( How about the Sembia series with house Uskevren and the ever loveable Erevis Cale. Brilliant characters all the way through that series :)

Ok, I think I've got something.

Avatar Trilogy Cast:

Adon: maybe Ben Affleck
Midnight: Katie Z. Jones
Cyric: Spike from Angel, I think his name is Joss Whedon
Kelemvor: the love-child of Vin D. and Bruce Willice
Elminster: Sean Connery
and the rest we can come up with later.

Now keep in mind that all of them will need some work to actually look like the characters, but I believe it is doable.

You need to do what they are doing with that new Forgotten Realms game coming out. Get a big name Realms author(R.A. Salvatore,Elaine Cunningham, etc) to write up a new novel using an entirely new cast, then throw it into an ongoing event(or future event) in Faerun.I'm becoming partial to either the upcoming orc horde descending upon the North(can cameo Drizz't,Bruenor Battlehammer,Alustriel, etc, etc, etc) or even the Return of the Archwizards Trilogy seeing as its got a ton of elves(YAY!), a handful of the Chosen of Mystra, more magic than you can shake a Staff of the Magi at,cool monsters(illithids, beholders, phaerimm,a sharn, liches, shades etc). The only downsides I see to either of these is with the orc horde gathering, it becomes reminiscient of the Battle of Helm's Deep from LOTR fame. Yeah another knockoff of LOTR!Just what we want to see! The Archmage series would require a ton of cash to do right, with all the special effects needed to pull off all the fantastic monsters and spell battles. As for characters.....Sean Connery is almost a shoe in for Elminster in my head. Katherine Zeta-Jones would make a good Alustriel.Vin Diesel could be a half orc commander in the horde(or even one of King Oboulds sons) and dare I say the Rock might make a decent Wulfgar? In addition to the big name talent....you grab some new faces for the adventuring group, but make damn sure they fit the part they are playing(big pet peeve of mine was the half- elven female ranger from the D&D movie, it just didnt look right on screen.) I think she would have been better cast as a straight human ranger....personally anyways.......The first movie could start with an adventure or two as they gain some experience and learn of the gathering orcs to the north, maybe encounter some in a dungeon setting looking for magic that the group is also looking for, when they leave the dungeon they discover they are behind enemy lines and have to fight thier way back to Silverymoon.Second movie could be them trapped in the city until Alustriel summons them for a mission to find a powerful weapon/summon allies/etc and teleports them out to do their mission. Third episode is them returning with allies/weapons and finding the city in dire need of help as the orcs have attacked and are overrunning the walls. The heroes join in the chaos and turn the tide of the battle with their newfound allies/weapons etc.

Just my $2.78 worth of ideas......

In short, I would really hate to see D&D or FR movies following the type of plot you outlined... it smells like a pure action movie, where special effects and frantic non-stop action can take away the rewards of storytelling. It reminds me of Xena, Hercules or Sinbad TV shows...

What makes great fantasy movies, IMO, are the same thing that makes great fantasy stories or books. You need good characters that you grow to love, interactions between the characters, a sense of adventure - and yes - a main character with a good heart. Audiences don't really shed tears if the main characters are rotten to the core, but good characters making sacrifices pull at the heartstrings of viewers. You don't always need heroes, but you certainly need heroic decisions by the characters (i.e. two little hobbits cannot slay hundreds of orcs, but their courage and altruism can allow them to face great dangers that can prevent evil from winning the day, as we see in LotR for example)

The kind of FR movie I would really like to see you ask? something like this:

- Two-hour movie;
- Main character is a young human orphan taken under the wing of a good-hearted traveling merchant. First 10 minutes of the movie show you the travels, the good advices given by the adoptive father, with the narrator being the adult voice of the hero describing his past as it unfolds in front of the viewers' eyes;
- Narrator voice stops, transition forward (i.e. 12 years later [fade], 13th day of Mirtul, Year of the Rogue Dragons [fade]); Merchant now much older, and young boy all grown up [enter main star of the movie - the hero]. Routine work done by hero in the back of a wagon. Scout comes back to report, "Master, we should make for Waterdeep by nightfall." Master nods. Caravan crests the next hill, revealing the City of Splendors, the sea, hundreds of sailing ships in front of a glorious sunset; next scene as the caravan rolls into Waterdeep during the evening, building's windows all lit up by candlelight, noisy taverns everywhere, streets filled with people.
- Intrigue/tragedy: something goes wrong. You can have the Merchant killed by some dark hooded assassin(s) or have the hero stumble unto a distressed girl being attacked or a mix of both (merchant is killed later in the evening after the hero saves the girl.. a note left on the chest of the dead adoptive father).
- Etc.

Basically, I would react better to a non-epic scenario. LotR did a good job at starting and finishing the movies with an epic scene, but too much of a good thing can be bad, and following the same horde-like scenario for a FR movie would feel like an absolute LotR ripoff.

No. Give me a good storyline. Something to amaze me and surprise me.

For example, the life of a young boy (the last of 8 children) leaving his poor parents to become ordained within one of the good Faerunian faiths would also appeal to me very much. His training, his classes, him making friends with other fellow priests. The priests travelling to cure the sick, casting their spells to aid, or escorting an ancient relic to another far-away temple. No battles necessary for more than half the movie... maybe even just one battle at the end, with him dying heroically, and with friends surrounding him as he draws his last breath. Maybe also make him a man of authority, a leader of this expedition reflecting of the responsibilities and heavy burden of dragging his minions into the dangerous side-quest that would put them all in danger (which he will avoid by making the ultimate sacrifice). Have him confess his fears to his long-time gnomish friend (a gnome illusionist in charge of the relic's safekeeping).

Such an FR movie would be remembered more than the usual fantasy format, IMHO.

I have just seen Troy.

Brad Pitt as Drizzt (would pull in the female audience - would be great with Twinkle and Icingdeath. Serious thought about body paint though.)

Hugh Jackman as Erevis Cale

Val Kilmer as Fzoul Chembryl.

Gary Oldman as Sememmon.

The list could go on and on.

I think we should think of something new to bring. If we want the movie to not be compared to LotR, get some budget and work on massive world shatering magic battles. If we do the quest stile thing, the movie will undoubtly be compared to the D&D movie (no comments) or LotR. And not something too long, or the plot will have to be too much cut. Anyone read "Best of the Realms volume 1"? I'm sure a lot of you did. There are some great short stories that would make good movies if worked around (The Blooding or Darksword for example).

Okay, I got suckered in...
And yes... this is a cast brainstorm list for a BG-style movie...

Aerie: Jennifer Love Hewitt (cute, with big eyes)
Imoen: Amy Acker (kind of bookish and inquisitive, but athletic)
Minsc: Vin Diesel (if we could get him some acting lessons, although he isn't TOO bad...)
Keldorn: Alan Rickman (he has a great voice)
Valygar: Michael Jai White (and he knows martial arts!)
Anomen: Alexis Denisof (okay, TWO cast members from Angel, no more)

I also think, with the whole "son-of-a-murder-god" thing, a great protagonist would be a paladin, sort of like presenting his strength of will against something so inherently evil inside him.

First of all, you can not use any actors from the LOTR movies. The slow suburban yahoos would probably mistake the movie for another LOTR sequel.

Though I would hate for it to be a chick flick, Brad Pitt seems to be the perfect choice for a main character. He just has that fantasy hero look to me.

Vin Diesel would make a good barbarian or some one of the Mulan race.

Johnny Depp, being the most talented actor in the world (and my hero), would make any role good.

Least importantly, I think that Christina Aguilera and Rachael Leigh Cook would make perfect elven women.

I really believe you would have to do a Drizzt story, imho.

Reasons?

Drizzt is the most famous of all FR char. People who don't even play D&D know who he is, just from the books themselves.

Of all the characters, he is the only one with True heroic struggles. Not only from the outside world, but internal struggles too.

I would do the Homeland trilogy, it allows people to truely understand Drizzt. IWD assumes a lot that readers should already know... ie Drow are evil.

THe pure act of betrayal and schemes in Drow society would strike a cord with a large audience. Drama is a huge draw factor, and Drow society is very keen on it.

A glorifed Hero movie, ie LOTR , is great once in a while, but I think Homeland has the good overcoming evil on a better level. Betrayal, Lies, Murder, Slavery... all being overcome by one person, that anyone can be redeemed if they only apply themselves.

I see it all in my head, and I could imagine it one the big screen.

ok this is just my opinion but if a FR movie was too be done it would not be anything that has already been written or done in games. as much as i would like to see the icewind dale triology done, i think something new for the big screen would be the way to go.
on a second topic i would like to see a tv show made showing a fresh from their respective training grounds beginning party! show them as they mature and gain experience and also can show the occassional guest shot of some of the big name char (i.e. elminister, drizzt) in the background once in awhile. and it wouldn't take much to find some reoccuring villians either.any red wizard will do or a zhent noble or...as you can see the list can be endless for main protagnoist(however you spell that darn word!!)
now this tv show can be live or anime doesn't matter as long as they keep it from becoming too much of a kiddies show or a xena or hercules(not that i didn't like those shows though, lol).

If the show were to be seriouse, especially if it were anime, it would need the whimisical seriousness of characters as the likes seen in Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. And if it ever became a kids show, and I consider Inuyasha a kids show, it would have to die. If it were to be live, then we could pull in some unknowns, or child actors who fit the ages and don't have jobs. Hell, we might even be able to find a job for Adam West (Batman to those who are uncultured).

I dont know if i want a FR movie, the D&D movie gave gamers everywhere a bad name.."this is about that stupid fantasy game those geeks play? This sucks" I mean if theyre gonna do it....dont do a half ass job. I mean as far as I'm concerned i still want my money back from the first movie.
As for plot I would do something with a new original party and probably make Szazz Tam and the Red Wizards the villains. Drow are good villains too but i think in a movie a lich necromancer would be a much cooler baddie.

the only cool thing about the D&D movie was to see a beholder in a movie theater, the thieves guild gauntlet was also quite fut. every thing else was terrible snails was the worst those blue and camoflaged skinned thieves at the guild were retarded. the CG blew for the dragons props were wobbly and lackluster and what were those mutant things that lived in the tree city???????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????

FR movie would be good if they based it off of the icewinddale trilogy and made no mention of D&D in the title, only to forgotten realms itself, face it it' would be hard to make something that could stand up to the level of fantasy epic films now that lord of the rings has set the limbo stick so low. icewind dale tri. would be good cause it contains many different types of struggles personal, good vs. evil. great character development possibilities for franchise. the avatar trilogy would be a little to heady for the average joe who knows nothing about faerunean lore
but icewind dale is something that most people would go see it's got all the qualities of god old sword and sorcery flicks from the eighties, Conan the barbarian, dragon slayer, willow. they could film it in sweden, norway, alps, alaska even, maybe even have that desperate and chilly tone of the viking village from the thirteenth warrior to the ten towns. i just seems the setting and the various peoples of the dale could be well produced and executed with good sets locals and costumes. as opposed to a highly fantastical setting which could come out total cheese cake

a lich is a good villain indeed but too similar to every other "dark lord" in every fantasy to hit celluloid. I'd go with the drow it would sucker movie goer's everywhere Evil elves that live under ground who worship a spider godess drow would have to be villains for sure they are one of the most unique bad guys in D&D as well as FR when compared to other high fantasies
