| Nainoa12-10-03, 02:01 PM | Say... I'm stewing up a campaign to be played after the current group campaign is finished... I'm setting it during the Dragon flight of 1356... When the cromatics went berserk etc... I did the Dragon Flight about 10 years ago, on a cross country vacation, and it was loads of fun in 2E. I'm wondering if anyone has any info on the event... The only info I have is the 2 pages from the 2E draconomicon, which isn't much. Thanks in advance... Nainoa |
| Iakhovas12-10-03, 02:14 PM | The best description of this Flight of Dragons that I could find is found in the old 1st-Edition gray box sourcebook "Cyclopedia of the Realms" p. 38. Two winters ago, many dragons of great size flew south and west from the glaciers beyond Thar, attacking many abodes of men. The damages from this single flight of less than a hundred dragons includes:
The city of Phlan was smashed into smoking ruin and abandoned. At the Citadel of the Raven two of three attacking dragons, as well as over nine thousand warriors perished. Mighty Zhentil Keep was heavily damaged by dragons who raged through the streets like great scaled cats, ere they were slain. Shadowdale and parts of the Elven Woods were set ablaze. The dragon was slain by the Witch Sylune, though the battle claimed her life as well. Several more events are listed but my fingers are getting tired. :D
This sudden attack is widely held to be the work of the Cult of the Dragon, a mysterious group of men said to have devised strange magical arts that give them mastery over evil dragonkind. |
| DwarvenBrew12-10-03, 02:28 PM | In the novel Evermeet, by Elaine Cunningham, there was a Flight of Dragons to Evermeet. The result was essentially Zoar becoming the first King of Evermeet. I don't remember the timeline, but I'll look tonight if I can remember to. |
| Nainoa12-10-03, 02:38 PM | So was the flight strickly something in the Dales/Moon Sea region... I was thinking it was all over the place... I'd given thought to having the campaign spanning different regions each one having it's own infamous name... Such as "The Battle of Rashemen" Or "Seige of Waterdeep" Sort of a year long WWII with Dragons... As a side note... This is a campaign for the "Hack and Slash" Players... As I've made an indepth role playing campaign for the Role Playing PC's already. So I guess, if it was only the Dales/Moon Sea... There's nothing keeping me from having it be in other places as well... Anyone have any interesting suggestions on other "Locations" to have a Dragon strike? Thanks Nainoa |
| Thysl12-10-03, 11:23 PM | Hey ya! Remember that this Realms year is the Year of Rogue Dragons. If you set your campaign 'now' you can place battles, seiges and apocolyptic dragon-death anywhere in the Realms you fancy. I personally like the idea of a Dragon seige. While I believe the notion of a Flight of Dragons intails that the beasts are insensed beyond reason your 'Rogue Dragons' could be as cold and calculated as always. Perhaps they are seiging a city becuase it protects a relic of great power in which Tiamat fears. She has sent a group of her most faithful Dragons to lay waste to the city and return the item. anyhow, good luck!:D |

| Dargoth12-11-03, 01:44 AM | Going off what Elaine Cunningham wrote in the novel Evermeet The Dragons rage when a Comet called the King Killer appears in the sky over Toril. (this seems to happan every 1000 years or so) It appears that the Dragons follow the comet as it crosses the sky, laying waste to everything beneath there flight path. PS Richard Lee Byers is writing a trilogy of novels called the year of Rogue Dragons, the first novel is called "the Rage" |
| Nainoa12-11-03, 09:35 AM | Ah yes... I read about that King Killer star once upon a time... So it is possible that Dragon All over the place went from North to South, and the current records just talk about the Dale area etc... I think it would also be pretty awesome to have them going up against a Halruuan Skyship... Unfortunately two campaign's back, we had a "Naval" campaign... I made cardboard mini ships, with hex's on them etc... Combat took so long though, that now any time I pull out a ship and put it on the table I get a instant group moan. Now as a side question... I've heard that my players are getting me the 3E Draconomicon... I read an excerpt that said there were rules in it for Dragon PC's. Has anyone read these... And/or what do you think about perhaps allowing a player to take like a young adult metallic Dragon? I'm intrigued at the idea, yet while this will be a high powered campaign, I'd be a little concerned about the power swing of a Dragon PC. Thanks for the feedback! Dargoth... Give yourself a thousand XP for that look up! :D  Nainoa |
| Lashan12-11-03, 04:42 PM | Someone else on another thread mentioned that they were playing the Rod of Seven Parts super module in FR. Every time the rod was starting to assemble, the dragons would go beserk. I'm not familiar with the module, but it sounded quite good. |
| Dargoth12-11-03, 06:07 PM | In Draconomicon there are rules for having a Dragon as a Familar, there are rules for having a Dragon as a Cohort and there are rules for having a Dragon as a PC race. So if your thinking of letting them have a dragon in the party the Draconomicons for you |
| lithian lightfoot12-25-03, 05:28 PM | Actually, the rage went on in several areas of Faerun. There is note of it in the 2nd edition starter books that the rage was as far south as Amn. There were ships destryed on the Sea of Fallen Stars and in the book Cormyr, there is an entire chapter dedicated to the nobles, king, prince, and magicians killing three dragons as they stormed Suzail. One at the Keep, one in the streets and one at Lake Azoun. I`ve also heard it rumored from a former DM that the dragon rage went into the Vilhorn Reach. I don`t have any sources for that though. |
