Hey people

Just wondering if there is any information out there about the netheril scrolls. I've read through the 'Age of Netheril' supplement and it says they are all missing, although this was written ten years ago.

Just wondering if they had been found, because if not it sounds like a pretty good long term campaign I could fit in in the near future.

So once again the question on everybody's lips, (well mine), Have the netheril scrolls been found yet?

Cheers in advance.

Not that I know of. I think it is up to you and your RPing group. It should be lvl 10+ material though imo.

There was a novel about it but I haven't read it yet, so I don't know how it turned out. Also Mintiper (Mistwinter?),the master bard apparently found at least one but he magically hid it or destroyed it. The Tree of Learning that the elves had in Myth Drannor was actually the Nether Scrolls in a different form and prevailing opinion is that it's still there if you care to brave the ruins and find it.

Well I'm thinking that maybe i could throw in a few clues about the netheril scrolls to my group and see if they bite. If they don't then i'll try again in a couple of months but knowing my glory hunting group they will go for it. Was semi-seriously thinking about time travel in there as well...bear with me...

In the 'Age of Netheril' supplement, it suggests time travel as an option, and explains how to go about it, but you can't take anything or bring anything back, but what about going back and seeing who took the scrolls and where they put them?

Of course its not that easy, you need an extremely high lvl npc mage to help them (Elminster is an easy example). This would of course mean doing some quests and campaigns in itself. The other, and in my view more interesting, way would be to find one of the three portals put in place by Mystryl. This would take a long time in itself and would make for a pretty cool campaign, especially doubled with going back to netheril and then having to return with the clues and go from there.

Hijacking my own thread here, but any views, comments or criticisms would be welcome on this idea/ideas.

Using the Time Conduit spell would be a way to go, but given its limitations it's unlikely that the PC's could do anything about the thiefs who took the scrolls without serious paradoxical problems. I would probably lead them up to a foray into the ruins of Myth Drannor in the search of the Tree of Knowledge, supposedly located in the High Mages tower. Myth Drannor may be boring to you however as it's been around a while and would require converting to third edition if you wanted to play there.

Well I was thinking that although they couldn't really stop the people who took them (as you say altering history is never a good idea), they would know who did it and where they put them. I think the time Conduit spell is the one mentioned actually, and these portals of Mystryl, with certain limitations, cast that spell when entering.

I'll have to look into Myth Drannor and see if its worthwhile then, although i may do a little bit of tinkering if it is only a myth/theory that they are there. If it is fact though i can't really do anything about it.

First, the term is Nether Scrolls. It's not that important, though :)

The Tree of Knowledge in Windsong Tower (somewhere in the forest of Cormanthor) is actually one set of the nether scrolls transformed by the elves to a more fitting form (for them at least).

As I heard it it could reform to its original form when left alone, so it may be just golden plates now :)

Rules part: Lost Empires of Faerun has a short description of the nether scrolls. Nice :)

Oh, and in Serpent Kingdoms you can read about the Creation of the nether scrolls (by the sarrukh)

It is a fact that they were there at one time, whether they remain or not is unknown. Also the Time Conduit spell is the only one Mystra allows for time travel, she won't even abide research into time travel magic beyond learning this spell.

And don't forget: there is another set of scrolls somewhere.

Absolutely. I mention Myth Drannor only as an example, you could hide the other set any where you want.

For example... Larloch' bony fingers  , the city of sarrukh in anauroch ( in the wardrobe of the Terraseer), etc.

Thanks for the info guys, I think i'll leave it for a while and do a little more research. It's just the whole idea of Netheril and the high magic ideas before Mystryl/Mystra put in place more limitations really grabbed me by the proverbials, it would really be different than anything we've, as a group, done before. I may be able to think of a better idea than the nether scrolls (see, I'm learning!).

The time travel thing would also be useful because i've got a really arrogant wizard who thinks he's the man. I'd love to see him so cocky when half his spells don't work!

On a Side Note, I don't have either Lost Empires or Serpent Kingdoms. Would it be worthwhile splashing out to get these for info on Netheril and the nether scrolls?

I never said it was a bad idea :)
If your players would enjoy, go for it! (I myself would love to find the nether scrolls in a good campaign, even through the corpse of larloch :D [dead or undead it may be])

If your into realms history, Lost Empires of Faerun is a MUST HAVE!
Serpent Kingdom hm, maybe, I would not by it again... but it is a good source.

A couple of things with both the nether scrolls and time travel.

1. one set is in Windsong tower - the real question is is its extra dimensional home still linked to the room it was linked to and so linked to where ever Windsong tower is or is it linked to the physical location where windsong tower was and so is still accessable under the right conditions.

2. there are 2 scrolls - just which is up to the DM - in the ruins beneath the great tree in the high forest - in the ruins of Aryvanndaar where the netherese first found them.

3. the time travel spell is a great way to go back. something to remember - the identities of the theives was never discovered and no traces of them after a certain point. Could it be that they were time travelers from the far future (ie your PCs) trying to take them and hide them somewhere so tha tthey could recover them after returning to the present? - makes for quite an interesting campaign.
1. find and learn the time conduit spell and enough about the history of Netheril and the scrolls to figure out when and where to go.
2. go back and learn enough in one year to use netherese magic effectively while still remaining as unknowns to the archmages.
3. steal the scrolls and then find a hiding spot safe enough for a few thousand years and store the scrolls there while hiding your tracks well enough to lose the archmages. all before being forced to return to the present by the time conduit spell.
4. go see if yoru storage space still contains the scrolls or if some one else (larloch? :evillaugh ) has found them in the mean time and set traps to punish the thieves when they return. (take a look at the short story in realms of the elves where the Knights of myth Drannor and several chosen have to fight agasint larloch's lichs for ideas on just hgow hard this could be.)

There are no doubt more than the mere 3 sets. Id wager 4 or 5.
Canon says 2 but they are both sort of accounted for: one as the tree, and another... well, check your "how the mighty are fallen" ;)

And then we have atleast one set split up into individual scrolls all over faerun (and no doubt beyond aswell).

To clarify, there are indeed only two SETS.
LEoF p.156 states "Two sets of nether scrolls exist, each consisting of fifty individual scrolls."

...of which....
1. one set is in Windsong tower

"the other set has been broken up and most lost."
of these scrolls....
2. there are 2 scrolls - just which is up to the DM - in the ruins beneath the great tree in the high forest - in the ruins of Aryvanndaar where the netherese first found them.

"At least until the Year of the Moonfall (1344 DR), three scrolls from this latter set lay in the Hall of Mists beneath the Grandfather Tree of the High Forest."

"Two others are in the Crypt of Hssthak, which now lies beneath the sands fo western Anauroch."

"A few of the remaining scrolls have been destroyed...."

Squidfur is indeed correct. There are 100 scrolls total. 2 sets of 50 scrolls. Each set is categorized into 5 chapters of 10 scrolls each. Netheril: Empire of Magic and Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves both detail them (they're free downloads on the Wizards site), and LEoF details their 3.5 bonuses.

I believe Larloch had a couple of them, or atleast copies of the origionals that he made. Perhaps i'm mistaking him for another wizard though.

Also, there was one burried in the secret crypt of the demi lich in athkatla. Edwin however finds this, and when using it, becomes a women. so whether or not this scroll is of any use, or even still in existence, is debatable :)

Just as a sidenote, Edwin has a quest in Baldur's Gate II where he finds one (?) of the Nether Scrolls that turns him into a woman until the quest is complete. Though I don't know how canon that is exactly, I've always guessed not very.

I think there were some scrolls (three maybe) in the Mintpers Chapbooks series of articles on the wizards main website. They may have been scattered due to an explosion in the vault beneath Grandfather Tree, however, that may also just be a story that Mintper told--the real truth may be something entirely different.

And what is even more true is that everything written down isnt true.. like just 3 manshoon clones etc...

Have a look at the "Blackstaff" novel, recently out, should enlighten you not just about a great deal of realms lore. Trust me, "a great deal", is if anything a understatement. But even even more, the methods of deceit which seals the point in not believing verything you read in socalled canon (dispicable desertgod reference word btw) ;)

Lets see now 2 sets of scrolls in canon realms.
It's a safe bet that Mystra or Azuth have a copy and
Oghama may have his own copy of the scrolls.

as for other possable locations for the "3rd set"
Behind Kraanfhaor's Door.
In the creator race ruins located in Ancherome.
Under the numerous stacks of papers in Elminsters tower
Shar took them.
Hidden in the mind of the Magister.

or you could dig through the ruins of the creator races and find there
notes on how they made them. [maybe even a lesser incomplete version]

there are so many Ideas for the DM to choose from.

One is in myth drannor, and atlest one is split up. One more is in a warded chest dug down.. and those lists are somewhat good.. maybe, so a few more than 3 are demanded. 6 or 7 sets id guess.

Azuth DID study magic in the ruins of fallen empires and, if I remember right in Netheril allso..

I am pretty sure Azuth arose way after the fall of Netheril.

Yea, I wasn't realy sure about that but I think your right. But he did study Netheril in the ruins of their kindoms.

Yup. He battled Savras, who was once a Halruaan diviner. Since Halruaa wasn't founded until after the fall of Netheril, I'd have to say Azuth came way after.

Actually according to canon there are/were 2 known copies - known to Nethril that is and from them to the (western) Faerun. 1 complete set is still together under elven control - sort of- in Myth Drannor or whereever the heck Windsong tower has gotten to. the other was split up and lore places some of the scrolls (less than 10 of the 50 are accounted for) in different places. the lore we have says that they can not really be destroyed - while you can rework the gold of the scrolls into other shapes etc they will eventually reshape themselves so you have lots of possibilities. The Netherese nare supposed to have found the 2 they did discover in either the ruins of Aryvanndar or in an even earlier ruin under Aryvaandar. LEoF places their creation in the hands of a group of creator race mages starting with Sarrukh and continuing with BAtracchi and Aeriee mages so the actual number of sets of scrolls could be considerably higher.
I would not be surprised to find that the Imascari also found a set and incorporated them into some of the Imascarna.
