The ShapeLess One

I just wanted to know what sorcebooks you people would like to see made for the Forgotten Realms campaign setting?

I would like to see one on the Cosmology, because they changed it. I think that a little bit more info on them isnt so much to ask for. Do any of you feel the sameway?

For me it'd be the Western Heartlands, particularly the Sword Coast. Can't beat that.

And then maybe one on lesser, unknown NPCs. The type of people who populate the cities and wilderness throughout Faerun. Just a book full of them.

you know I dont think I could agree more with you Tarus. I really like that idea.

Oh, yes, Shapeless One, I would love to see a Manual of the Planes type sourcebook for Faerun. It would be great fun to get a sense of what it feels like to fight in the armies of Clangor, ride a nightmare across the Barrens of Doom & Despair, study in the library of Oghma, or climb a tree in Arvandor.

They could present info on some of the monster deities like the goblin & kobold gods, the giant gods, and the dragon pantheon (such as it is these days).

They could show us some uniquely Faerunian outsider NPC's.

I would love to read interesting write-ups on godly realms and planar sites.

That would definitely be a book I would buy! :)

For the love of the Oinoloth... please no. Don't give any more justification or credence to the trainwreck that is the 3e FR cosmology... :yuck:

That said, I'd love a supplement on the Cold Lands or the Shining Sea region.

And my saving grace here to prevent such a blasphemy from being printed is two words: Market Dilution.

Not everyone plays in the realms, so Realms books are already only going to be sold to a fraction of the overall DnD audience. Of that smaller audience, only a fraction will ever run a game on the planes in their FR campaign. And of that group there, only a fraction still will actually use the 3e FR cosmology rather than the 'core'/Planescape cosmology.

So in this case the bean counters may end up giving a retroactive abortion by apathy to the cosmology. And I apologize for being mean here, but it's just my nature you see. *fiendish grin*
Gray Richardson

03-01-05, 06:01 AM
Awww, Shemmy, you say you're mean but I know your just a big softie at heart. ;)

Here's the thing. I know to a near certainty that if they published such a book, and it was written in part by Eric Boyd and maybe Ed Bonny or Rich or some of the other great talents on the FR team, that this is in fact a book you would purchase dispite all your protestations.

Even if you don't use the Tree and prefer the Wheel, such a book filled with planar goodness would be nigh indispensible for a Realms tinged Wheel campaign. The descriptions of the deities' divine realms would be easily adaptible to a Wheel campaign. Most of the other planar stuff could be mined for ideas or imported wholesale to the Wheel setting with the change of just a word here or there.

And the magic items, the prestige classes, spells, monsters and other supporting materials would be setting neutral and planescape friendly as-is.

How could you say no to such a trove of wonderful planar lore? :)

Me thinks the 'loth protests too much! :P

Dales, Cormyr, Sembia (also covering trade in general), Western Heartlands, Dragon Coast, Moonsea in roughly that order. It's been four years, and the Heartlands regional sourcebooks are overdue.

And a book about adventurers, and "Clans of the Stout Folk", an Impiltur book by George, and the rest of Undermountain and the Dungeon of the Crypt.

Put me down for a Cormyr book as well as a Dalelands book. Sure they are the most covered of the Realms but that stuff is getting harder to find and pricier everyday! I don't like PDFs so don't even mention ESDs.

I'm still waiting for an update to the Moonshae accessory I purchased in 1987 :D To sweeten the deal and offer broader appeal, how about a regional sourcebook about the "Island Nations of Faerūn". It could include Moonshaes, Nimbral, Lantan, and Nelanther. Perhaps even Evermeet, though there has already been a sourcebook covering that island.

Of course, I'd also like to see a "Beyond Faerūn" sourcebook briefly covering the other continents of Toril. Mazitca, Zakhara, and Kara-Tur obviously, but this would be a great place to include the lands of the Utter East, Archorome, and perhaps even the "Lost Continent" to the southwest of Faerūn that has been hinted at over the years.

most likely we'll have to deal with the somewhat... dissappointing races of the wild (2 arcane spells in the entire book? I thought Elves where famous for their magic :(

I am no elf fan but I would agree with you BrianCritchley.

The only Reason I think there sould be a planes book is because they changed it.

Iakhovas:
To cover those regions they would have to write a whole campaign setting for them, that would be great! :) or really big sorce book, well I guess thats what it would be even if it were like a campaign book huh. well I would like that ether way. :D

I'd like to see some "in charcter" source books, like the volo's guides etc. the third person omnsciant view is handy for DMs sure but occasionally an IC prespective is handy.

maybe if they contiune to do their current POV they could add in some "in charcter" side bars giving a "in charcter" prespective on events?

Seems like alot of us would like to see more fluff for the Realms; as BrianCritchley mentioned, more in character stuff. 3e products are mostly crunch, while fluff is mostly overlooked (fluff was a much bigger part of earlier editions). Personally, it would be a nice change of pace to see more fluff in general D&D products (and the Realms in particular).

I'm hoping for a sourcebook on Cormyr. A lot has happened there over the last decade, with the Death of the Dragon storyline and such. As the base of my group's campaign, it would be nice for an official update.

03-03-05, 03:20 PM
I would also like to see a new sourcebook on the heartlands Cormyr, Sembia and the dales, A lot has happened as people have said and I would love to see more on Cormyr in general, some info on the tilverton situation maybe. I will be happy with whatever they bring out probably. I suppose we will just have to wait and see.

The number one book on my wish list, is a book about Neverwinter and the other great city of the sword coast.
Most of what I know about Neverwinter comes from the video game Neverwinter Nights.

But I'll also like some info on the rest of Toril. There must be someone i Faerūn who know something about the other continents.

I would buy a sourcebook on the Not-so-Great Tree only if they included The Great Wheel info as well. Or they could just drop the Tree and make the Great Wheel official for 3e FR. I prefer the latter option. The 3e FR cosmology is an idiotic tack-on by the designers. Thank the gods I still have my 2e stuff.

I would love to see the other Creator Races get the Serpent Kingdoms treatment. It would be ultra-cool if Eric L. Boyd would write a Sylvan Kingdoms for the Fey creator race, a Swampy Kingdoms for the Batrachi, and a Soaring Kingdoms for the Aearee avian creator race.

I think a fey or faerie themed book might sell well on its own. It is possible that the other two creator races might not be runaway best sellers, but maybe all 3 races combined into one book would do very well.

There are so many cool races that descend from the Batrachi: the locathah, doppelgangers, tako, sivs, bullywugs, (gripli?), and others. The Aearee have the aaracockra, the kenku, tengu and dire corbies. If you combine that with lost temples, ancient religions, sky cities, the plane of faerie and ties to ancient fey gods, the High Forest, along with adventures based around sacred sites, artifacts, spells and ruins of these lost cultures, I am sure there is a wealth of material that could make such a 160 page book a great seller!

Heck, if you threw in some pages about the Giant empire, and stuff from when the Dragons ruled Faerun, such a creator/ancient races themed book would be a must buy for all Realms fans!

Faiths and Pantheons 2: detailing the temples of the gods, what there common defences are, do they do business with there congregation? What variations on the cleric do they have? Special magic items and spells? What about feats and new uses for skills trianed to only those of that faith? What about rules for building generic temples you can easily place? How do the the various clerics of the gods deal with PC's who come knocking?

Forgotten Realms Atlas: Detailing dungeons, out of the way settlements and Temples, above ground ruins, More detailed trade routes, known dead magic or wild magic areas. Information on the nations standing army, Active mercenary companies. Places to buy or find special materials or items. Where are the bardic and arcane colleges, where are the common barbarian settlements. A Calender! Infromation on sea faring, the cost and routes taken.

Ways of the Weave: This could be an interesting book going into full detail to end all debates about the weave and the Shadow weave. Of Course there would be info of new magic items and spells. But what i think should also be detailed is info on Magic before Mystras ban on spells over 9th level, for those of us who want to play before then, a set of rules to balance 10th level plus spells would be nice.

Island Nations: A region book on The moonshaes, lantan and evermeet would be cool. Of course there would have to be specific spells, feats, prcs and monsters.

Forgottten Realm Character sheets: with room for home region, date of birth. (of course id also like a character sheet using the variant rules from Unearthed arcana) It wouldnt even have to be FR specific just add Home region and date of birth to the sucker.

Forgotten Reamls DMG: Detailing the role of years for as far ahead as they have planned to far ( this is for us DMS who play ahead or have long campaigns). Ways to work the role of years into the game. Rumors or plots about various regions to work into your game. Info on how the Novels are effecting the game world or have a effected it. of course new feats, monsters and prestige classes or DM use ONLY!!!! Locations of where the various organizations have cells, enclaves or whatever there group calls them.

Champions of Light: an organization book for the good guys.

Sister Lands: detailing Kara-tar, Zakhara and Maztica. Heck id settle for the old stuff jsut copy and pasted into a nice new cover, with conversions of course.

City of Shade: if waterdeep is getting its own book this myterious city should too.

Allies and Enemies of the Realms: An NPC source book. with revised character stats. All Major characters from source books and novels. with special rules for unique items they may posses or powers. and well as there last known wherabouts and actions.

Monsters of Faerun II: This should convert all second edition monsters from FR that still havent been delt with. and a few new ones. Id also appreciate Prestige classes for monsters only.

Monster Deity Book: i cant think of a name but id love to see FR info on monster deities. What is the Great mother like? What about the Dragon gods? Giant gods? Goblin Gods? And of course monsters, PRcs, magic blah blah blah. This might be worked into Faiths and Pantheons II if they were to stop this 160-192 page nonsense.

Well those are all of the books id like to see. Some of them i know have a small chance but hey its what i want.

Actually, most of what I'd like to see has already been covered on this board.

I'd love to see a book on the other craetor races, but i'd prefer it not be all the remaining creator races together, I'd like to see one on the Batrachi in particular; maybe the rest later in their own sourcebooks.

I'd also really like to see a "champons of light"; the bad guys have gotten way to much coverage in FR by comparison, and I oculd use organizations, hierarchies, people, prestige classes, and abilities for the good guys. Heck, you could run an entire Thayan party and have a prestige class for each of like six people in a well balanced group; lets see more love for the good guys or neutrals.

As far as regional sourcebooks, I'd love to see a new "Lands of Intrigue" book, I have always enjoyed Calimshan and the situations in both Tethyr and Amn cry out for adventurers.

I would personally prefer to see the FR cosmology revert to a "modified Wheel" cosmology, for one thing, I don't personally like the idea of nearly the entire cosmology being dependant on the whims of gods for existence, it makes adventuring there rather pointless imo; however, that rare bit of disapproval for WotCs decisions aside, if they won't revert to the wheel, I'd like to see the Tree detailed in a sourcebook; better a mediocre something than a nothing in my mind.

My no chance only one who seems to want it comment: I'd love to see an underdark sourcebook 2 - I feel about the Deep Imaskari the way alot of people seem to feel about the shades - just too cool to not get more coverage - magic specialized deep humans that are heirs to a nearly extinct magical tradition... (wipes drool from chin).

and finally, a purchaseable, table-sized, (or large wall mountable) very detailed forgotten realms map and underdark same with the new stuff like Serpent Kingdoms accounted for.

Don't forget that in FR, elemental savant also essentially for Kossuth only :} (In fact, I think its in faiths and pantheons, but can't remember of the top of my head). I'm beginning to think that, except for the fact that i'm not really all that fond of the CN ruler of a kingdom that is the simbul, I agree with everything you say. perhaps I should run a search on you and hit /agree everywhere your name pops up lol

I like the idea of many low-key npcs from all over faerun. Another book I'd like to see, would be a book about all(or just many) arcane spells created in faerun since netheril's fall, and more 10+ level spells converted to epic. Also, a little more info on the different in-city assassin, fighter, and magic guilds of the world.

The FRCS says that the FR cosmology is different from the baseline cosmology, so I'd like to see a FR Cosmology book, with a section on how to tie it in with the baseline cosmology, since some of the books say there are portals to some of the planes in the baseline cosmology. For instance, the Underdark book talks about a howling cavern that has a portal to Pandemonium. Other creatures, like Yugoloths arrive from Gehenna in some of the books, Styx Dragons have shown up, and Elminster even went to Baator. That reminds me, does anyone know where in Faerun there's a portal that leads directly to Sigil?

We've got SKR to thank here. It was set in the 'baseline' cosmology for decades before it was summarily retconned without explanation in 3e. *shrug*

Some of the novels have ignored the retcon despite being written after it. It was a fantastically stupid design decision IMHO, and one that SKR has never fully explained in a public forum. I'd love to see his reasons.

As for the portal to Sigil: there's at least 1 portal, and the one you're probably thinking of is underneath the Abby of the Swords in Battledale. I'm sure a glance through the Planescape material might have another portal or two to Toril as well.

Very true, I love Planescape so much. It seems to be a trend for different CSs to use their own cosmology, which I think is stupid really. There is so information about the baseline Planes, even down to the way planars talk and phrases they use. You would throw all that flavor and information away just because you didn't make it up? FR should take advantage of all that has been written through Planescape.Axe the Tree!.

Got it, berk?
Thelandrach

03-16-05, 09:57 PM
You guys do realize there's an entire chapter on the cosmology in the Player's Guide, right? You want them to blow an entire hardcover sourcebook on something they've already got covered in brief in the FRCS, in more detail (with a bit of translation needed) in the Manual of the Planes, and then they provided the detail in the PGtFR?

I vote for a book which lists at least one paragraph for every single place name listed on any of the maps they've published. If it's supposed to be an actual dungeon, give basic stats as to what level it should be, and from what civilization. If it's a city, give at least basic stats as from the DMG for what the town has in it. I don't even bother using my maps most of the time because all it's got aside from terrain is roads and place names, and there is nothing to back up all those names.

"Tel-quessir" what can I say, I'm an Elf fan-boy

I second this one. I would love to see a book about the current elven realms, such as Evermeet (hasnt been touched since before Evermeet the novel), Evereska (to give us some idea of whats left of the population/city), and the High Forest, with some of there ruins (like Myth Drannor and the supposed Mythal that causes the rage to the north), and more elven artifacts/prcs (along with atleast some Redone Elven High Mage, through I think mine is preferable).

Then Again I am an elf Fanboy, look at what I've done to the Elven High Mage.

Another good one would be a book that changes the stupid tree back into the wheel, or how about a book in which the asm is more powerful then the average choson?

I got some more.

Power Play: a Political book set in Faerun. running Political games. Also has info on how various nations deal with each other. Do some nations outlaw items from another nations or limit settlers from other regions? How are other races treated inside the kingdoms (like would an orc be instantly attacked inside cormyr if he hasnt done anything). Under what circumstances will they go to war or stop trade?

I dont have a name for this one. But how about a book for Schools across Faerun. How and Where was your Fighter Trained. Where did you bard learn to sing and who was your wizard an apprentice to? We need info on Bardic colleges and Wizard schools. What about Knightly orders and temples that Train paladins and Clerics. Where do these places operate. Are the schools akin to a fast food chain or do each nation have there own schools? How do you join or get accepted? What are the fees? How long does it take to train and what are common tasks that need completed before you take this class?

The Dalelands: a book detailing the Dalelands

Threats to the Realms: This book should detail the threats to the realms. Such as how deadly are Orc Hordes? how often to they attack? What to illithid have planned for the Surface? What about the Shadovar or Beholders or the countless other evil beings waiting to conquer Faerun? Info on past methods in repulsing such invaders. What had failed and where and when they have succeeded. What vile classes or magic do they use to assualt the world? Do they fight each other? Do they create new monsters to use? Are they openly hostile or do they scheme?

Hmmm thats all for now.

I didn't see it listed in your linked page; is that going to be a Dungeon magazine series? So, nine modules spread over nine issues of the magazine, so about $80 for a big module?

That'd be a little spendy...

In order from what I want to see most:

1. A FR spell compendium with a a complete list of spells and maybe a little history behind each. Also an IN-DEPTH system to developing spells and placing levels on them. Not epic-spellcasting, 0-9th level spells.

2. Lands beyond Faerun; Kara-Tur, Maztica, Zakhara un-named landsfar far west and east.

3. Big bad book of elves.

4. More ancient empires material. That book has made me very excited to send my players back into ancient times but lack of supplement material is delaying the grand adventure. A list of spells at 10+ levels, before mystra's ban was in effect.

5. A new interactive Atlas book with CD-ROM.

Please no more Cormyr, Dalelands and Elves for a while.

Sword coast, Amn/Tethyr/Calimshan, Island Emprire's, Vilhon Reach are fine by me. I like the Silver Marches a lot and would buy more in the same format (preferably hardcover).
A book on the little folk, gnomes and halflings of faerun, we've had elves, dwarves, humans and orcs for decades now.
I liked the idea of a book with lot's of low level NPC's.
And the politics idea also had some merit, but maybe more as a general D&D product.

An Atlas book... Showing roads, cities layouts, and given small detail about each city..

but alot more detail then the region books that they have now, minus the feats, items, etc...

I would love to see an Atlas as well. Even if it was just updated maps from the old Atlas CD-ROM. Details on the cities is always welcome!

Please, no more feats! I have more of them than I know what to do with.

Also, I realize some would rather not see more about Cormyr but nothing has been done with it since the demise of Azoun. I'm dying to see what is next.

I want more affordable paperback books.

The Lands of Intrigue, Amn, Tethyr, Calimshan is a well settled, big and detailed area that hasn't received a full 3e treatment. A lot has happened as well, Amn's ogre troubles, the fledging and newly re-formed Tethyr, and Calimshan up to it's usual.

As mentioned before Cormyr has gotten the stuffing beat out of it, and that hasn't been fully detailed in a book.

Underwater kingdoms, all the myriad ones that were usually merely mentioned in sourcebooks previous.

In order from what I want to see most:

I agree !! I feel there is some stuff missing about that ancient and once powerful race (understand elves). And now that ancient civilisation are coming out back (!!), it could be interresting to focus on all of them, to understand what they where and what people now know about them.

Oh! Hem, and yes ::ahem: no more feats :yuck:, no more irrelevant races :pbbbtt: (that means NO one), no underwater stuff :noway: (it's not my cup of tea), [=> I feel fed up with all those "rules" stuff used to pack the books (some says "to hide designers lack of inspiration"...), which are useless, as there is no way to use them all in a game. More background for FR please :cheer: ]
and something about Thethyr, Amn, Calimshan...

Could be near perfect for me

I don't think they'll be putting out sourcebooks on small regions like the Dales or the Moonsea. These regions will be put together in bigger regional books like "Shining South" or "Unapproachable East".

My guess would be:
Lands of Intrigue (Thetyr, Amn, Calimshan, Lake of Steam(?))
Cold Lands (Damarra, Vaasa, Narfell and Impiltur, maybe even Dragon Reach and Moonsea)
One on Turmish, Chondath, (Lake of Steam), and the Old Empires
One on Western Heartlands and Sword Coast
One on Cormanthor, Dales, Cormyr and Sembia (and Moonsea?)
One on the Isles (Ruathym, Moonshaes, Nelanter and Lantan)
Maybe one on Chult and the Shining Sea (without Calimshan, maybe with Lake of Steam)

IMHO, this selection is similar to the scope of the regional sourcebooks already published. It's probably even too optimistic, given the size of Shining South. It covers a huge area.

I'd want Cold Lands first. I'm partial to Damarra. Don't ask me why. :D

And I don't expect anything beyond Faerūn.

Oh if they do the Cold Lands as you have suggested, I hope they bring in George Krashos as one of the designers as I would love to see some of his legendary Impiltur material see print. I can't imagine they would write that particular book without his input.
